Are vintage lenses worth it if you set aside the nostalgia/collecting aspect of using them?

At first I was enthusiastic about them, but the more I read, the more the whole thing felt like a massive headache. There are issues like radioactive coatings (not a big concern, but not something to be completely dismissed either), glass coloring that has to be removed with UV light, potential mechanical failures due to old lubricants, "bad" and "good" copies of the same model floating around, esoteric differences between sub-models from different batches to be aware of, countless adaptors to choose from (some of them faulty), and then there's the whole business of eBay hunting and dealing with potentially untrustworthy sellers or hidden flaws.

I realized that most of the people frequenting "legacy glass" forums treat buying, fixing and comparing different old lenses as a hobby unto itself, whereas I would be happy to just buy myself a "good enough" 35mm and 50/58mm and be done with it.

I'm perfectly happy with manual focusing, by the way. My two main lenses at the moment are Samyang/Rokinon 12mm and 21mm for APS-C mirrorless and I wouldn't exchange them for their AF equivalents. I'm aware, though, that at narrower distances both AF and image stabilization might come in handy - so maybe that's yet another reason to focus on something more modern?

old lenses are generally worse than modern lenses (optics, coatings), more likely to be beaten to shit, and since it's such a meme for mirrorless, prices are hugely inflated.

I still buy some cheap ones occasionally, but only to use with vintage cameras, since lens quality/features is way less important there.

I own the D7200 and it's really good but if you can get a FF I think you would be better off.

Hey /p/ I used to work for small no name camera repair shop run and owned by a depressed alcoholic divorcee (also the head technician).

All Sony camera repairs (including video cameras) in my city (a major city) came to us, I was hired with no qualifications and no experience whatsoever.

How did I get the job you ask?

>Selling a lens
>Need to get the front element cleaned
>Go in and ask if they can give it a quick clean
>alright.jpg (alcohol breath over 9000)
>gives me lens back
>hey, can I have a job lol?
>yeah ok, let me show you around

Started working the next week, pulling sonys apart and fucking most of them up (I literally had no experience so what do you expect), putting things back together incorrectly, throwing screws in the bin when I didn't know where they went, breaking parts (flex cables) by accident and then just charging the customer. etcetera

Not only that, the head technician was so drunk and raged up everyday I saw him throw people sonys cameras at walls and then frantically try and put them back together, repairs took weeks and weeks if not months because no one knew what the fuck they were doing.

The End

>ask me anything

I haven't worked there for over a year now, people's Sony cameras are still being fixed this way in my city kek

Sony have 2 repair centres in America, both are in house teams for much larger non customer facing companies.

And their european repair centre is in frankfurt and is again a non customer facing company subcontracted by Sony.

cheap instagram esq filter, unless your going for that type of look
>>
It has nothing to do with being over done or not, it is simply preference of how you want your tones to look and how much colour you want in your shadows
>>
>>3040239
i would then say to only apply that style of tone to certain photos that would benefit the blacks/shadows being brought out like that.

me personally i would use that type of tone when the shadows are the main focus of the image or a majority of it.

I have a Nikon d500 with a 35mm and a 85mm 1.8. My family is going on its first family vacation to Louisiana and I was wondering if you think these two focal lengths should be good enough to capture the moments. If you could recommend a different lens for the trip what would it be and why? Thanks.

Are you a prime shooter? A prime shooter knows how to make things work, and what things won't work at the end of the day.

Pick up a 16-85 VR if you're a fuccboi.

Sounds like a solid kit to me. It might be nice to have a wider angle than 35 for some situations, but I think you'll be fine.

Still learning what I am. I do prefer primes though.

This place is cancer, no wonder all the good trips eventually leave.

What places are the best online photography communities to see good photography and chatting about it? Learning about it etc.
56 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
apug and photo.net, though they are both just as full of petty sniping and brandfagging and fragile egos as anywhere else on the web.

The truth is, photography is a super intimate, deeply private form of personal expression, and is ultimately a solitary art. Because of that, there is no shangri la for photography discussion on the internet. Some places are better than others, but they all suck in their own way.

So it's not that all the good trips (and anons, the best photographers were all anonymous) ride off into the sunset, they just realize there's not much they can learn from anyone else at this point in their journey.

Hey /p/... I'm planning to upgrade soon and I'm leaning towards the D750. I'd like to discuss the D750 vs D500 vs D810.

I primarily shoot nightlife/clubs/raves/concerts (event photograhy). However, I do a lot of portrait work as well, mainly for press kits and that kind of thing.

Suggestions?

TLDR; D750 vs D500 VS D810
28 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
The D500 is a specialty camera. Unless you shoot sports or wildlife, it's probably not what you're looking for.

Ask yourself if the features on the D810 justify the price difference, for what you need. Honestly all three make excellent images.
>>
Well the D750 isn't that much of an upgrade from the D600 which you can now get for triple figures.

The D500 is crop sensor - and, lets face it, who the fuck still buys that. Image quality just suffers.

So I would probably recommend either saving for the D810 or simply buying a D610 - the D600s big brother with a better mirror configuration.
>>
>>3037978
I've read a ton of comparison articles and most of them choose the D750. I'm upgrading from a D7200, so regardless of which camera I choose, it'll be a MAJOR upgrade from what I'm currently shooting with.

I don't see reason to choose the D810 over the D750. The difference in the price for a few "minor" upgrades doesn't seem worth it to me.

Thoughts?
