Wow, except for that palm cut in the bottom and the disgusting highlights, it's a decent shot. Might be the reason we'll get more gear and gas station with him.

Looks like shit, is of nothing, isn't even level.

Imagine you put as much reading and practice into playing a musical instrument, you still have thousands of hours of reading and practice before you should come back here.
>>
>>3055233
there are probably 2-3 people on this board who have put in thousands of hours of practice into photography (gonna go out on a limb and say you're not included). This board would be pretty dead if only those people were "allowed" to post pictures
>>
>>3055232
Well, what I think you were going for was a dutch angle, but in order for this to work you would need to angle it even more but this photo didn't really call for it.

The reason I think you like this photo is because you're starting to realize what catches human eyes. You have something in the foreground that continues to the background. However, what this is missing is a subject. (in my opinion)

Just keep shooting bud, whatever catches your eye

I am so sick and fucking tired of seeing mediocre or sub-par freelance DP's low balling the market by supplying a RED or ARRI Alexa mini package for an insanely low price.

Seriously, taking a mortgage out on a camera package does not make you a cinematographer. You're creating the expectation that a DP needs to have a high end camera package in order to be hired for low end work.

STOP THE FUCKING BULLSHIT!

N00bs gonna n00b

It's what happens when you make your work out of what is now considered a hobby
>>
I'm somehow get the feeling that you aren't Chivo or Deakins, but are instead a sub-par freelance "DP" complaining about other freelance "DP's" who have nicer cameras than you.

That's okay. you do you.
>>
>>3053125
It's kind of an unfortunate situation for a lot of the people in the industry. I'm a videographer (definitely wouldn't call myself a DP) and I was going to shoot a music video for a relatively small band in Texas. Had two a7s for 4k, a few lenses and really basic lights. We were going to shoot two camera men, two days including the editing for like $2,000. The director wanted to go with someone that had a red that would do it for the same price. Clearly the director went with that. But I get it man, I can't compete with those guys, and unfortunately it's just the fucking name. People that are semi-familiar with the industry, know the name "red" and will pick someone only because they have that camera. A lot of the industry is how good the camera looks for the peoples ego. They see the big camera, and they'd rather have that than a small dslr, because it looks good in the pictures. Granted a Red takes a shit on a dslr, but you just can't compete these days with people that have those cameras, because they're the ones getting the jobs. That's why you see everybody and their mom running around with Red cameras

Usually yes. If you are happy/satisfied with your life, your art will be complacent / ironic. When the only functioning thing in your life is art, you are off to a good start.

Sup /p/.

Picked up a few rolls of Kodak HIE infrared film in Tokyo and plan on taking shooting them up tomorrow. Any suggestions or advice from personal experince? I don't expect to be spoonfed basics, I've read a shitton but wanna hear som personal experiences.

I will be developing the rolls here in Japan myself, so baggage check xrays etc. won't be a problem.

Thanks.

Oh, plan on tossing them in a Canon AE-1 Program, and have no IR filter, so hoping you guys might know some stuff about shooting with/without a filter.

Sage cause I'm not gonna be that shitlord who bumps his own shit 5 minutes after posting.

You need a red 25 filter. Go buy one or you're wasting your time. With the filter on, set the meter to 400 and shoot away.

Where'd you get it from? / how much did it cost?

Obviously you want to try to find scenes with lots of green...otherwise it will look pretty damn close to regular b/w. Also, I'd wait for sunny days. It's going to be cloudy AF for the next week here in Mie-ken. Hope you're getting some sun over there.

Can someone tell me what I am looking at? I've seen some photographers with this style and I just don't get it. Basically photographing oddities in life?
>>
>>3050670

You're looking at a style variously known as:

>New Topographics/New Topography

Which is a somewhat accurate way to describe it, but also woefully inaccurate as New Topographics was a single exhibition in the 1970's, and not a singular genre that extends forward to today. It's useful as a tool for comparison, however, because a lot of this style derived most of its language from NT, especially from the work of Lewis Baltz and Robert Adams.

>documentary

Which is sort of a catch-all (what photography ISN'T documentary?), but it works.

>formalism

Which is true for some photographers who prefer a less narrative-driven and more aesthetic approach to their photos, but there are also photographers who are "saying" something with their photos as well and could still be classified as belonging to this overall style. gangculture has strong formalistic elements in his work, for instance, though he has plenty of narrative elements in a lot of his photos.

>deadpan

this is probably the most apt and contemporary descriptor of this style, and googling "deadpan photography" will bring up a lot of photos and photographers working in this style. it is still an incomplete description, however, because deadpan is supposed to be an emotionally neutral approach to the photograph, but there are plenty of great photographers who suffuse this style with ironic humor, or even sorrow or anger. gangculture in particular has a great sense of humor and playfulness with his work, which i think elevates him above his contemporaries.

It's not about capturing the oddities of life, necessarily. That's a shallow reading of the style. It's more about how life itself is odd. There is no normal, there is no center. Entropy is everywhere, everything is fucked up, but life is short so why worry about it?
