I Shoot a lot of 35mm film and have recently been scanning using an Epson 3170 flatbed scanner. But the scanner doesn't seem to be able to produce sharp results.
Are there any recommended Scanners that will do a better job than my currently primitive piece of technology?
>>3062349
A fullframe dslr scanning rig.
>>3062349
If you need the convenience of a flatbed, the best you can do is an Epson v750 or v850. Basically the same but the 850 is slightly modernized and warms up faster.
Alternatively, >>3062358 if you have a really nice digital camera like a D800, A7R or similar and a macro lens, taking a photo of the slide will actually produce results that in some ways may exceed a scan.
>>3062349
A dslr scanning rig will outperform the best drum scans.
Any ilc from the last 5 years will do fine of you don't already have one, sony nex 3 and 5 are nice and cheap. Then you need some m39 bellows and an enlarger lens, this will give you $800+ macro lens performance for under $100.
Then you need a white backlight - tablet screen on whitescreen or a flash and remote trigger
Some diffuse acrylic that sits a bit away from your light source, opal acrylic is how it's referred
A way to mask film and hold it flat, you could use the existing film holders from your scanner or your imagination.
A shroud from light table to lens, 2 pringles tuubes painted black, put a slit up one so they slide over each other.
Ignore the 2 posters that say it must be fullframe/good dslr, bellows will allow a crazy amount of magnification, if you want you could do an 8 shot stitch on a crop dslr, enlarger lenses tend to have zero vignette or distortion.
it was a loooong time ago that i took photography in school. i recently came into enough money to afford a fair kit. ($5000)
i will be using the camera mainly to take photos of houses to post online for a local realtor.
if i get a cheap camera <$800, what lenses should i get. which should i use for what?
to capture the whole of the property, to make a living room look bigger, etc...
For probably 3k get a decent ff camera and a good wide angle lens for your system. With the extra money you can get some lenses to enjoy yourself with or some good accessories that you will probably need (speedlights & a tripod)
>>3078970
yeah. that's what i'm thinking too. but i need some specific models to check out.
>>3079166
A Nikon D750 will suit your needs, well, forever.
Throw in something like the 20mm D, and you're golden.
What are the most popular genres of photography?
Not YOUR personal favourite but the overall most popular genres normies want to photograph with their DSLRs??
I'm thinking landscapes/architecture (travel) and portraits (pics of family friends etc) must be what most people want to get good photographs of no?

hello my friends :-)
maybe you remember the project i am working on. for the past couple of months i have been spending occasional evenings shooting at various pay-by-the-hour "no tell motels" in the Bronx at peak hours of activity (usually between midnight and 3:00 AM). these joints are almost exclusively used for prostitution and drug use/sales; it goes without saying that they are not nice hotels.
i have posted work and updates from it here before, and it generally has not been very popular. in ffact, the general consensus has been that i am a hack and should kill myself. but as I've recently developed and printed some new material as well as rescanned all my old prints from scratch, I'm going to upload 29 photos from the series in thsi thread - because i love you all so much and want to Bare my SOUL to you. again and again. even though it hurts both of us.
love,
michael

I typed this up earlier, but you deleted the thread.
The sharpest part of that photo is somewhere around her skirt and the bench. A good portrait should be sharp around the subject's eyes and facial features. That's where we read all the most important information about another person.
That angle of view is okay for a portrait, but I'd prefer to get closer - waist-up or shoulders-up.
Her pose is expressive - it shows her nervousness - but her expression is blank. The photo doesn't engage with her well and I can't get an idea of her personality.
Keep practicing.

Canon rangefinder bros, are you here? My Leica M4's shutter shat the bed and will cost me too much in repairs to bother with for a while. But I have a Canon 50/1.8 that needs a body now. Is the P the only way to go, or is the 7 reliable? The 7's viewfinder looks huge, like the Cosina Zeiss Ikon.

What are the best guides/tutorials (paid or free) for improving landscape photography?
I live in one of the most beautiful parts of the world and I have literally no good landscape images (though I have honestly never really tried).
I have decided that I should take advantage of the location and try to improve.

Put on your kit lens, get your tripod out and go shooting. If you see something, a good subject (cloud, lake, mountain, a goat fucking another goat) just shoot it. Take the photos at sunrise or sundown, never mid day.
That'll be $1000, please send immediately to paypal account
research and scout a lot
wait a lot
prepare a lot (reading weather report, etc)
wait again
wait again

Wow, you literally nailed your own problem.
You're never going to take the most beautiful landscape photos from in front of your computer screen.

because film cameras are beautiful, and they all have their own personality. you cant have too many of them.
You have 4. Thats not so bad.
Because that whole collection is worth less than an entry level digital.

I've been looking to buy a new lens for my GH2 (which I eventually want to replace with the GH4 or GH5 in the future) as I only have the default kit lens with it.
I don't know a whole lot about lenses but the default lens seems to have very clunky focus and zoom rings. It's almost impossible to get a stable zoom and very difficult to focus quickly without having to completely turn the ring at least twice.
Has anyone got any recommendations as to what I should be looking for? I'd like a lens that has the ability to go decently wide but can also decently zoom and have a good focus ring for extreme close ups.
My budget is only $400 unfortunately. I'd like to eventually get a Metabones speed booster to give me a wider shot and allow me to shoot low light easier and a Sigma 18 - 25 in the future.
Additionally, what are some good resources where I can learn about all the jargon and technicalities of lenses?
I appreciate any help - thank you.
