Damn. Came to post this. Can't beat the weight or price on this compass.
>>
>>680363
>>680365
Yup same here. If you need a compass to know where North here, you don't spend enough time /out/
>>
I use this. 13 grams, real compass, thermometer, magnifier, glow in the dark...

If you've never had to deal with clouds, fog, or whiteout blizzards, you don't spend enough time /out/.

pic isn't mine it was the first good one google pulled up though. they are all made to the same specs though.

i would not recommend buying one, but if you join the military it is one of the things you should, um, lets say, requisition. mine lasted me 2 tours and 10 years now and still looks pretty damn good.
>>
>>680453
Of course I've had to deal with inclement weather. But that's not really the time you want to be traveling, is it?

I either already know the area and therefore don't need a compass to navigate, or I'm new to the area and wouldn't risk trying to change locations during a storm.
>>
>>680571
Weather reports are only available a week in advance, Anon. Serious outdoorsmen tend to stay /out/ longer than that.
>>
>>680571
So, you are bitching that compass are not for real men because you can just look at the sky, but you want us to carry fancy robots to tell us where we are and where to go?

Recta DP-6 G is my best, but most of the time it is overkill and a simple Silva field will do.

I hope you have an actual compass and know how to use it as back up when this one dies anon.

This anon speaks the truth.

Stars are not the only thing you can use to find the north.
Sun, shadows, fungus on trees and a lot of other thing you can look at.
But I actually always carry a compass, just in case, but I never use it. If it was heavy I wouldn't carry one
Pic related the compass I carry

>fallout zone detection ruler

lol what? It's because the compass contains a small tritium vial pointing north. Most compasses and cheaper watches contain fluorescent markings which need to gather light during the day to charge them so they can be seen to glow at night. A tritium light source does not need "charging" as it is continuously undergoing radioactive decay, hence the trefoil.

Bubble showed up a few weeks ago... 5k+ ft elevation swings, and in/out of the truck a few times a week (70°F+ temp changes) rekt it.

Gap gauge comes in handy, used it last week... truck and trailer keys on there as well. Usually stow my everyday keychain in the truck, then use that key to lock the doors.

Whole thing clips to a snap stitched inside the pocket of my jacket.

Map of the area I'm riding, along with my avalanche fieldbook, small notepad, and pens/pencils/sharpie go in my pack.

GPS is mounted to my sled/bike.

>>680433
At that point, why not just use a GPS?
>>
>>681332
I was referring to the length of the line beneath the radiation symbol.

It's nothing to do with "fallout zone detection" lol

I used one when I was 14 once but not in the last 10 years. Nobody should need one.

I've got a pocket transit, but I'm a surveyor and that's mostly there as kind of a sanity check if I think something might be off. I also use it once in a while for remote site construction stuff if a whole lot of precision isn't needed.

Public land survey system detected. Is it a pocket transit or direct siting compass...

Pocket transit. It's an old brass bodied brunton.

Silva's are excellent bits of kit.

What do you think of their "123 System" anon?
