Going on my first /out/ing in Zaleski state park with my girlfriend. The total trail is about 25 miles and we're going to be there for 3 to 4 days. She will be bringing the tent, ,stress and stove. This is a mockup of everyhing I packing in my ruck and relatively the order and position it's packed in. How'd I Do? Any changes or suggestions? I'm a backpacking virgin pls be gentle

I have no idea why it flips this picture upside down
>>
Serious question. Why are you spending 3-4 days on a 25mi trail? If you walk a little over 6mi per day, that'll take you 4 days. At 3mph, that's only 2hr of walking per day. What are you going to do for the other 22 hours each day?
>>
>>1028145

>Water
Should be able to carry between 1 to 2 liters of water at least. Should have some method of procuring more water from the trail. A good solution is the Sawyer mini water filter. If that doesn't work, you can also use water purification tablets, or simply boil the water. Boiling takes a lot of time though, you have to wait for it to cool down, then you have to pour it through a filter (coffee filter or bandanna) to get the burnt ash out.

>Food
Should pack 1,500 Calories a day at the very least. I would avoid canned foods because:

1) The metal is heavy, and since you can't litter, you have to carry it with you.
2) The canned food has a lot of water content that also makes it heavy.

I recommend relatively dry foods like granola, cereal, summer sausage, energy bars, Spam, etc... You could also carry cookable foods like dried egg powder, rice, oatmeal. Since these foods are dry, they require water to supplement or cook, which hopefully you can procure from the trail.

>Fire
Bring a couple of Bic lighters and a book of matches.

I've noticed a lot of questions about doing things with no gear and thought it'd be nice to have a thread dedicated to it. I've been trying to hike barefoot and build up cold tolerance so I can sleep outside with no gear.

What can you do with no gear, or what questions do you have about not using gear
31 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
>>1026972
Not doable outside the tropics, man. Cavemen wore footgear and used knives.
>>
>>1026972
>All natural
Humans had fur when they were all natural
>>
No gear, yes skillz.

And more than skillz: curiosity, playfulness.

For sleep, try different things. Trix are climate/soil/astrology dependant, so no 1 trick is magic bullet. Try:
• dig hole, maybe hole is warm.
• pile leaves for a blanket, like hedgehog.
• sleep in sun like lizard, travel at nite.

Also barefoot is possible for most peeps during non-freezing days. Lukewarm semi-wet mud best for feet, cold dry asphalt worst. Only remember: zen. Barefoot is problem if you hurry and sleepwalk mindlessly. When barefoot, forget goal; focus on journey. Care and slow is good, at first anyway; your feet will grow strong and agile and gentle and smart. Trust + rispekt + love + harmony <- these you learn to experience towards your feet, your body, once you set it free to grow.

Most shoes are foot prisons and foot torment chambers / humiliation chambers. Feet who grow in shoes for 30 years (like mine did) are like malformed retards at first, feeling only fear and pain and embarrasment when first time free... But persevere! Take it easy at first, start by walking on soft moist grass / mud / sand. Then rest, eat well.

If your feet hurt, take a day off. Give your feet a massage, a bath, a scrubbing. Bandaid the cuts / abrasions, use healing lotions and salves.

Try new shoes too, google "barefoot shoes" and save up that $$$ to get a nice pair of lite-weight/thin-sole/super-flexible shoes. Vibram Five Fingers(tm) meme shoes can be ok, but also try lite/thin/flex shoes that just have wide room for toes to spread; no 5-finga style needed really.

...

Read up, dream, try/play/experiment.

Build huts, dig holes, try using rock instead of axe.

Oh, you mean the one where a bunch of homeless people congregate to be intentionally dirty together and pretend it's not just because they're poor?

Last time one happened in a town near me people were going into the grocery store and urinating on racks of food, so they could steal it all from the trash when the store had to throw it out.

Anyone here have experience with long term wall tent living?
3 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
My old high school buddy lives in a canvas wall tent up in Montana. He works on a large farm and they just let him set up a little place of his own. I went to visit him last Summer and it was pretty sweet. I don't think I could do it though. While I enjoy going /out/ on the weekends, I still need my high speed internet to play video games during the week after work. But he seems pretty happy. The people he works for are very nice as well. Took me on a hunting trip and we went fishing and then hung around my friend's tent with a bon fire and enough beer to supply a spring break beach party. The locals were pretty cool too. It was a small town off a major highway and everybody was pretty chill. Everybody rode around in 4 wheelers, UTVs, bunch of old trucks with farm use tags. Felt like back home in the country where we grew up but much nicer scenery.

Looked into putting up a yurt. Properly insulated, it does pretty well in cold climates but does seem to be that great for warm ones like where I live in north Georgia.

Will an US Army wool blanket in a tent with ground insulation be enough to keep me warm in 50 degree nights?

Yes. I primarily use it for a ground cover down to the 50s. I also use a thermarest for my torso.

>>1027785
If there's a possibility it will be below 60F I always take a sleeping bag over the wool

wouldn't be warm enough for me.

depends on what you're wearing also,

Will a mushroom anchor work for a 34ft yacht?

How much weight should I go for?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
depends.
>>
>>1027465
Depends what the bottom is like, but in short, no. Weight isn't really the big thing, you really just want to be hooked into the ground, weight can help that. Danforth style anchors are great. For one they're really light, and secondly they dig in very well to mud. But not every bottom is mud. If you're in the Louisiana bayou, and there is a maze of Cypress trees below you, you're gonna get a Danforth stuck. In that case something like a mushroom or a cannon ball might be better so you don't have to cut anchor lines. I'm assuming that you're going in the ocean with a boat like that , if it's mud bottom (I don't really go near the ocean) go with Danforth, but if it's sand , I'd go with something a bit heavier, but will still hook. A navy style anchor will likely work well. As far as weight goes, I am not positive, but we used a 25 pound navy for a 28 foot Pontoon in calm water. (Lake calm not ocean calm). There's also something that works very well called "the claw". It's an odd shape but works very well. Two tips I have is to leave maybe 3-5 feet of chain between your rope and anchor, I find it holds better. Secondly a general rule is to multiply the depth of the water by seven and that number is how much rope to use, for example if you are 10 feet deep, take 70 feet of rope. This is something I read, and I don't really anchor in anything bigger than 3 foot waves. Hope I could help.

Anyone ever try keeping a journal of plants they find? I'm not too great at drawing but I think it would be cool to learn and I think plants would be a good start. Anyone have experience with this? I'm thinking drawing plants when I see them then writing in more when I get home and research them.

I picked up this bike about a week ago It's a vintage Rockhopper series from Specialized, I think from the late 90's.

Sat in a garage for probably close to two decades until the owner finally decided to get rid of it, so it's in great condition.
I bought an older bike because I wanted to cut my teeth on something simple and cheap. I plan on using it for generally getting around, but also to beat up on the trails. What are the opinions on an older bike like this with less aggressive geometry for having some fun on the trails? I'd like to get better at bhops and general technical navigation. I"m not expecting it to blow my mind on the technical stuff, but can it hack it?

I was walking in the woods last sunday, I'm on the Alps.
there aren't lakes or rivers in an area of many kilometres.
while I was walking suddenly I started to smell fish, like if I was in a fish shop, not necessarily rotten fish, just fish
there aren't camping sites either.
I checked the surroundings but I didnt find fish on the ground and trust only a lot of fish would have made all that smell.
This will remain a mistery in the history of these lands

chance are it was a tree or some other plant for example IIRC female Ginko seeds smell like death that if they are planted by mistake in the city they have to cut down once they become adults. they have a rancid butter kind of smell.

so i assume its a plant using flies to pollinate

like
Escallonia viscosa - swines
Thymus comosus - terpenine
Calla palustris - death / rotting meat
Phallus impudicus - death/ meat
