Was he a fat acceptance guy? I thought this whole thing was him trying to lose weight. I only watched a couple minutes of his "final thoughts" video though.
>>1035198
How many days did it take him to do the 15 miles? I have no desire to watch a fatty on youtube i hate every idiot vblogger i ever watched. But if he was fat and untrained and did 15 miles with a pack in a day i would be impressed.
> trail magic
"Look at me I researched a lot of hippie blogs before doing this!"
I'm thru hiking the AT once I finish my bachelor, taking a full half year for it. I swear to god if I meet a single person talking about trail magic or wanting to give me trail names I'll start swinging.
So what plants can I make cordage out of?
poison ivy
>>1034387
cool wat does that look like?
>>1034385
Dogbane. You have to wait until after the first frost, which causes the poison to collect in the roots.
Its nice to have an outdoors wristwatch thread, to post what you're currently wearing when on an /out/ing. So here's mine;
>Casio SGW 100 w/ negative display
I've had it for a year and a half, its of good quality and the compass and thermometer are correct almost to the degree (+-0.1 C and +- 4 degrees compass)
I use this for serious adventures

And this everyday in the city and when I travel to shitholes
The other one is bigger and easier to read at a glance if I'm climbing something
I also bought this because I liked it on paper and it has a very distinct Metal Gear Solid feel to it.
But it's shit irl. Not solar and no Multiband 6. 2 to 4 second error each day. Absolutely worthless.
Nowadays gshocks are a meme one use only watch, protreks seem better
First weekend off since I moved to Denver.
Want to leave early tomorrow and go van camping withing an hour or two of the city.
Any recommendations for nice dispersed camping with firewood nearby and maybe fishing?
Fuck off we're full.
>>1029570
I am already here.
Maybe if some of you unemployed hipsters got jobs, they would not have to recruit half way across the country.

California is real nice this time of year, and its only about 1,000 miles west.
topo maps can be kind of expensive... should i invest in a gps? what's the best bang for my buck?
>>1005297
how about you kill yourself
>>1005297
Plenty of websites that let you print off topo maps for free. I print them out and just take them in to get laminated, costs like 30 cents.
>>1005303
i thought of that but the usgs maps are like 30 inches by 20 inches? print shop will print and laminate that for you for 30 cents?
There any fishermen here who'd recommend me a small sturdy fishing rod? I live near a creek and would like to start fishing. The fish are tiny about between 3 to 6 inches long
>Fishing line + hook + sinker
Wow that was hard, definitely worth the thread.
>>1038557
I am an imbecile to have asked :)
>>1038554
Id recommend you use the GOD DAMN CATALOG
How is snowshoeing coming from a skiing background? Is it for girls or what?
>>1037666
>is it for girls or what?
Nah. It's great for accessing parts of the backcountry that aren't suitable for cross country skiing
>>1037666
It's great, and if you grew up cross-country skiing like me, snowshoeing is a similar activity on a fundamental level, and it gets the same parts of your brain and body going. And it's a lot cheaper in terms of equipment.
>>1037666
Friend of mine once said "Snowshoeing is the winter sport equivalent of the fanny pack."
In my experience, it's pretty awful. I'd take skis over snowshoes any day of the week.
I need a new mid-size backpack.
Eyeing the berghaus centurion 45 with added mmp pockets.

I have the centurio 30 and it is great.
It has withstood loads of use and you can carry a ton of shit both inside and strapped to the outside of it. If your packing very heavy loads though I would recommend something with a padded waist belt.
What are your thought on long waterproof coats for outdoor excursions?
>>1037432
Heavy and restrict movement. Their only valid application is horseback riding, for which they were invented and intended.

What is it with /out/ being a weak bunch of pussies?
>>1037440
What is it with /out/ ridiculing people that don't like to needlessly inconvenience themselves?
Any anons want to meet up on the A.T.? I just passed mile 400 a few days ago. I will be in Damascus Virginia in a couple days. Anyone who wants to meet up at a trail head or town anywhere along the AT I will meet them up, hopefully gathering an army of anons along the way!
I'll be periodically posting photos in hopes of swaying anons to join me on my quest for glory.
Sorry about the inverted and sideways photos I don't know what's up with that hit
Have fun with the ponies and remember they have no concept of age of consent
Thoughts on LIVING in Anarctica, /out/?
>>1037216
Well, you are not going to live there forever - that's the main point.
It's easy to get depressed during winter, because of total darkness for about 4 month (I have friends living on Svalbard, so they know how it works).
Overall, I would really love to live in Antarctica for some time, because of love to photography and nature.
Hurray Southern Lights and darkest sky.
too cold. mcmurdo's interior temp is kept at 57 degrees. i applied as an emt a few years back as a goof, totally not expecting to get an offer, then felt like a bit of an ass when i had to tell them thanks but no thanks.
Insane orgies. Other than that it's kinda dull here
Very messy view of my SV650, because it's too complicated to mount sidebags + topbox.
How do you deal with luggages on small stops? Like if you wanna stop to visit a village without leaving your stuff prey to thieves?
>>1037252
travelling in scandinavia is pretty safe. you can easily leave your stuff and go hiking for like a day
get a proper touring bike w/ panniers & top case, or be prepared for constantly wet/dirty gear.
Also, very unsafe WRT center of gravity changing handling characteristics, extra weight changing braking, strong side gusts blowing you across lane of traffic.
Owned an SV650 for 10+ years, now ride a R1200RT to tour.
Fuuuuuuuug I bet nobody else on here does that shit.
Perhaps not!
I so wanted to do this when I was younger. Alas, there aren't any practicing Falconers close by for to understudy with.
What materials CAN'T you put DEET on?
>>1036853
penis
never put it on penis
>>1036854
Thankfully I don't have many articles of clothing made from penis.
>>1036853
Rubber (watch straps, condoms, etc). DEET melts that stuff.
Which makes me think that DEET shouldn't be on your skin. That stuff b
b nasty
I'm hiking the Colorado trail this Summer and need suggestions on food. So far I'm thinking we just snack in the morning and throughout the day, then have a larger dinner.
For those of you who don't know, the Colorado trail is 486 miles (about 5 weeks) from Denver to Durango and rough mountains.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated (not just food). If you've hiked a trail similar to this, or have been backpacking for more than a week, post your biggest struggles of the trip and anything you would have done differently.
Thanks a lot! Btw this is my first time on /out/ so I won't get the memes. I will be posting beautiful pictures of the Rocky Mountains to grab attention.
For reference
pemican and hardtack.
