Bikepacking seems like it is up my alley, but I'm not really sure what to look for in a bike.

Anybody got any suggestions? Not looking to spend more than $800 or so.

Zion is so full of tourists I wouldn't bother
Go someplace else
>>
>>1033714

If you want to get away from the tourists, go to the Kolob Canyons section in the far north end of the park. This section, which is rich in red rock, is quite different from the southern end of the park. Other than out stuff, what do you really expect to do in a national park? There are a lot of slot canyons in Zion, but unless you really know what you are doing, don't venture into them.

I'm always ruining my jeans when I go /out/ and I'm poor right now so I can't afford a good pair of jeans.

I need something cheap and durable when I go /out/. Like 20-30 bucks

What are your recommendations?

Something other than jeans.
>>
>>1033427
Honestly if you're hard on money just go to Walmart and get the dinky Rustler brand jeans, you can get 4 or 5 pairs of comfy jeans for $40
Obviously you get what you pay for so they likely won't last long but it's a solid short term solution
If anything they have the Wranglers for like $20-30

>>1033427
Propper makes really good stuff for a decent price. You can always find surplus BDU/DCUs for dirt cheap online too.

Hello Friends,

I have been into bushcraft for almost 20 years and, surprisingly, just found out about /out/ one month ago! I have seen some threads about batoning, which is one of my favorite ways to split wood in a minimalist bushcraft situation.

It truly is an art and, while I broke two knives when I first started, if you have proper guidance and put in the time to gain experience, you'll realize how superior it actually can be (depending on the situation). I was very disappointed to see posts denigrated batoning as a joke or "meme", it's simply not true.

I have been seriously considering starting a non-profit organization for the online teaching of bushcraft, specifically batoning, machete use, and other blade-related bushcraftery.

I just want to gauge what the enthusiasm would be for a nascent National Association for Machete and Batoning Learning and Activities (tentative name). Any suggestions are welcome, I'm going to look into purchasing a domain shortly.

Thanks and what a great community this is!

what are the pros and cons of axes vs. folding saws for camping trips /out/

i recently got a folding saw and i feel dumb for falling for the ax meme since i primarily wanted the axe to chop apart thick branches for my fire but i ended up almost always using it as a hammer.

whereas the first time i tried the folding saw i felt like a new man. i easily cut through branches twice the size of my arm while bearly getting winded, where as with the axe i had to constantly take breaks and i felt exhaused afterwards.

i feel like scrapping my axe altogether now. i hike everywhere and weight is really an issue.

i'm fairly new to camping though, so maybe there's a use to the axe that i haven't figured out yet. should i still carry it around with me just in case or should i give it up?

Is your axe sharp?

An axe for felling is a different beast to an axe for limbing.

Personally I use a 21" folding bow saw and a 1/2lb hatchet. I can get through 12"di easily with the saw and I use the axe just for limbing and camp chores like making tent pegs.

I do also have a folding . pruning saw (bahco laplander) which i tend to take in warm.weather longer distance hikes.

Personally a saw > an axe as long as I have another cutting tool like a fixed knife.

Also.a.much safer tool

In a hypothetical one tool scenario I'd want an axe
>>
>>1027827
I carry both.

it's easier to split smaller logs with an axe than with a saw, and for extremely large logs, having a saw to start a wedge driving channel in the wood is useful.

Hey /out/. If anyone could give me a second opinion on this animal id, it would be greatly appreciated. I'm 90% certain I know what it is (yosemite toad) but I'd like some outside confirmation.

Toad was located on the east side of the sierra nevada mountains, and was approximately 3 inches large,

Fowler's Toad.

When looking for IDs, mentioning where it was encountered and any notable behavior can also help easily narrow things down.

Common fish that size dont exist after commertial fishing did its thing, good luck finding anything bigger than a couple feet
>>
You need to go to your local tackle shop. Start off with a light spinning rod. Nothing too expensive because you might not like it. From there, you will know whether you have the bug or not to spend out on proper gear.

Start of aiming for smaller fish in your area and research what kind of game fish you have, if any. You probably want to get a rod/reel combo around the 5kg mark to start off with since its a good middle ground to catch really small fish and medium sized fish. Ideally, you would use braided line because it is way more sensitive so you can feel bites better than standard monofilament but it requires you to tie more complex knots which might fuck you up at the start.

To catch fish in your OP, you need to go far off-shore 99% of the time, but there are spots landbased here in Australia where such fish can be landed. Minimum tackle to catch a tuna of that size is 80lb on a strong overhead reel. Maybe 50lb if you want a super long fight... It is very expensive to buy the tackle etc to catch fish like that so its best you start small.

Good Luck, Pal.

About a dozen times off hiking trails and camping spots in the last year ive found single deer legs broken at the joint. Always seems to be snapped and i never find any other signs of life. Why am i finding these pieces of deer legs?

ive had the same experience, but ive also come across mountain lion paw tracks nearby where i find the deer bones
>>
>>1039064
Probably just hunters. There isn't really any meat below the knee joints so most hunters will just discard them or give them to their dog.
>>
>>1039091
Same fagging

Also, the reason you only find one probably has to do with coyotes. They'll go to a hunter's kill site to take anything that's left over.
