Hey /out/, any tips for someone who wants to do something outdoors, but lives in Las Vegas, where it's 115 during the days? Tips for not dying of heat stroke? Specific gear I should probably get? Thanks in advance for anything. Pic is of a rock in Red Rock Park that I visited this spring when it wasn't awful

Just flew into Las Vegas a few days ago; I'm doing conservation work in Mt. Zion. It's so hot here, it's absolutely unreal. I'm from southeastern US so I'm used to humid heat but this is something else entirely.
>>
>>1042455
and to answer your question, I wouldn't voluntarily go out in this right now. Apparently the heat wave is passing soon so maybe wait until it's only like 100. Las Vegas is close to Hurricane/St. George, which has some of the best climbing/mountain biking/hiking in the world, so that's always an option.

I run one of the backpacking clubs at my university so I would obviously recommend you join

What's it like?

It will depend on the people in the club, I joined the one at my uni but it was filled with autists so I never did anything with them.
Go to a social and get to know them. If you like them join. Otherwise you can always organise your own stuff if you find friends who like the hobby as well

Found this light-up Livingston crank just laying on the shore today.

Battery's dead and it's missing hits hooks+split rings, but otherwise seems fine.

Recommend me the proper-sized trebles for it.
>>
>>1041783
are you sure it's dead?
>>
>>1041793
Yeah. I've gotten a couple like it out of MTB's, you're supposed to wet your fingers and touch the two hook eyelets to complete the circuit. It'll make a light clicking noise/feel if the battery's good.

I take it this one sat in a tackle box most of its life, because the body of it is pretty much pristine.

On the floor from left to right in the top row is: my bag with tarp and trowel, tent with pole and stakes on top of sleeping pad, fleece sleeping bag liner, pot with cup and lid (the canister, stove, spork, and towel below will all go inside), below that is my water filter and to the right is all my extra clothes (a fleece top, synthetic t-shirt, second pair of underwear, two more pair of socks, also a hat and gloves)

The second row contains: a rainjacket, maps also a notepad and pen wrapped with some duct tape, my first aid kit*, iodine (for water treatment but also first aid), toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, toothpicks, hair pick, balm), tp, extra plastic bags, electronics (two phone chargers and cables also a battery pack and extra batteries, flashlight, headlamp, bearbag with rope bag on top.

On the bed are the items that will be on me: hat, bandanna, sunglasses, whistle, knife, hand sanitizer, mp3 player, clothes including nylon zip off pants and a light long sleeved cotton shirt, shoes.

*First aid kit weighs only half a pound and contains, gauze pads, antiseptic wipes, bug bite ointment (this is for my dog so he doesn’t scratch himself too much), an assortment of bandages, scissors, needle and thread, safety pins, extra batteries, extra lighter, a pair of nitrile gloves, anti-histamines, anti-diarrheals, anti-inflammatories, an emergency blanket, a mirror, and a roll of athletic tape.

Backpack weighs less than 25 lbs, and everything in the picture plus the phone in my hands weighs about 28 lbs

I'm assuming those people are dead.
They must have been really desperate to drive between those trees.

I've seen the effects of a big bonfire on cars and it will literally melt every rubber and plastic part off.
Melted radiator, cooling fan, tyers, and air filter box kills the car and it's passengers stone fucking dead way before the glass starts to go soft.

In modern cars especially, with plastic front mudguards that melt easy, there is no protection for the tyres.

I bet it was fucking Eucalyptus's fault. What a piece of shit tree.
Ten years ago I applied for a logger job in Spanish/Portugish border region of Extramadura.
You were given a pickup and an axe, and a thousand Eucalyptus trees to clear. Some priest had planted the trees 50 (now 60) years ago.
No chainsaw because the trees were an extreme risk of spontaneous combustion. Evaporating oils or some shit.
Didn't get the job. I'm assuming the guy that did is still at it.

Anyway, stay safe Portugals.

I don't. Same boat as you anon.

Advice on living off the grid and keeping the government away from your business.

So I have lived in poverty for most of my life until recently. I recently got a decent job and managed to save 30k in 3 years, but I hate this work.

My plan is to buy 20-30 acre in the middle of nowhere Midwest with a well and a used RV trailer with a solar powered generator and some propane.

So anyone know how best to
>Avoid DNR / small game hunting
>Avoid property tax surveys
>Living year round without labeled as "primary resident" for tax purposes.
>Putting in a septic tank / water tower / ect without permits (i.e. avoiding penalties).

Do it right or don't do it at all. In other words, don't attempt to do any of the things you greentexted. Get everything permitted up properly and pay your fucking property taxes, so Uncle Sam doesn't come and rip it all out from under you. Life's got enough tripping stones as is without you adding more by cutting corners.

t. nowhere, Midwest
>>
>>1040581

The thing is, I have worked in construction (unlicensed) since I was 13 years old. I can easily build something like a septic tank, but good luck getting the plans through without a license. Oh, try getting a license for someplace like Beltram County. It is a bunch of good old boys who prevent anyone they don't want from getting a contractors license. So you either pay them 15K to do it, or you do it illegally yourself for 300 bucks.

I've been wanting to make one of those, but every time I think about it I realize I have too much welded wire fencing laying around I could use first and it lasts 20+ years.

Those peppers are so packed in. You could have planted 1/3 the amount and they'd still fill out the entire area, fyi.

I'm not really a hunter, and it seems like each terrain has its different animals, trapping techniques, and even amount of animals to hunt. But every environment has bugs.

So what if you took a solar panel + battery pack + LED light + Bug Trap similar to pic related. Set it up at night, and bam. In the morning you have a jar of bugs ready to eat. So theoretically if you got stranded, and weren't familiar with the plants or wildlife, you could just subsist on this.

Also ideas on bug traps. I'm sure this isn't the best type to make

You can do the same thing using water, yeast, and some sugar. The yeast will ferment the mixture and various things will come to it, not just gnats (amazing for ridding your house of gnats/flies; webm). You may want to insert a screen just above the water level to prevent the large insects from drowning in the water.

Entomologists normally use pitfall traps, which is just a container buried in the ground so that insects walk into it and can't get out again. Sometimes they are baited. This is good for larger spiders, ground beetles, wood roaches, crickets, and even sometimes amphibians and reptiles. A container with curved shoulders will help. I use similar traps baited with the above mixture to capture and kill slugs in my gardens.

Fair warning, yes, you can eat slugs/snails, but that can be very dangerous for numerous reasons:

http://www.motherearthnews.com/real-food/edible-insects-zebz1305znsp

Not only do you need to cook them no matter what, but forcing them to eat something safe so they dump all the previous food from their digestive tract is also a must. Most people use carrots. When the slug/snail starts pooping orange, it means the digestive tract is clear then you can cook and eat them. Or, in the wild, cut them open and remove the digestive tract before eating.

Beetles are your best bet for big quick protein. Your night light is the best method of getting them. If the container is painted black everywhere but the funnel it will help guide the insects to the funnel trap. This is also a great away to help rid your house of winter-hibernating stuff like stink bugs and Asiatic lady beetles.
>>
>>1042343
Thanks, I'm going to try it sometime this week. My only worry is it won't be in sufficient quantity. Even with multiple jars set up.

A good trapper has tons of traps setup in tons of places. Most of the day is spent walking between trap sites setting and checking traps.

Anyone dealt with this, I am in central USA where nearly every ash tree in our 96 acre area is dead or dying. I have read about the Emerald Ash Borer and have found a website that shows infected trees in my area. At this point am I safe to assume my entire wood is effected. Is there anyway to save the remaining trees or do I cut my losses and start chopping firewood.
10 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1041329

Pretty much fucked I'm afraid.

Depending on your budget and the number of trees you want to save there are 'medications' which a certified arborist can apply but they're expensive and no guarantee.

Most municipal governments removed the dead and dying Ash and replaced it with Green Ash - which is not susceptible to infestation but which is also not as nice a tree.

Sorry about your trees. Anthropogenic environment change is a bitch.
>>
Start chopping fire wood and planting new trees. Same shit happened around the midwest. The entire county got wiped out.
>>
>>1041329
Happened in the UK. Start chopping, I'm afraid.
