Hey /out/, I'm gonna be going here for an extended backpacking trip pretty soon (first time ever coming to Yellowstone).
This place is huge- other than obvious touristy things like Old Faithful, etc. which areas should I make sure to see? What are your personal favorite backcountry campsites? General trip planning advice would be much appreciated.
Ayy Im going to yellowstone tomorrow. My first time as well so sadly no advice
>>1043514
Do you have backcountry sites reserved? If not you'll probably be SOL
>>1043514
Honestly Old Faithful wasn't that impressive, but walk the geyser field boardwalk. Some really cool smaller ones there, pic related. It also crosses a little stream that always has trout hanging out right by the bridge, they're fun to watch.
For me the draw is the animals. I went in early June last year, and camped out waaay out in the middle of nowhere away from everyone else. Woke up to a herd of elk trying to eat my tent one morning, and when I got out they just stood there like "wtf are you? Why are you interrupting our meal?"
i live in southern new hampshire right down the road from a beryl mine and i have spent a few days there out in the woods looking for beryl. so far i have found pure beryl which is clear and emerald and aquamarine beryl as well as golden beryl. other stones include smoky and rose quartz and a small garnet. id like to get into it more and perhaps someone on here could provide tips on how to look for small minerals and gems in dirt much better? currently i use a small rock hammer and pick through the dirt and rocks for the pieces. there was an old cave but i think someone blew it up because its all rubble now.
stones i have found
>be black anon
>love to go camping solo in more secluded areas
>local gas station attendants look at me like im a fucking criminal
why can nobody be friendly to a camper
:(
Do you also get pissed off when people recoil from venomous snakes? It's not the people's fault.

im not a bad guy tho :'(
i just wanna camp
Maybe if your race didn't commit 80% of the crimes while being 13% of the population they wouldn't look at you like that
I want to buy a knife of <100 dollars
full tang and blade Length of 5-6"
My research tells me that the Ka-Bar Becker BK2 Campanion is the best call
Any advice / opinion / experience ?
That looks heavy and has a shitty blade geometry. Get something thinner, heavy duty knives is a meme long gone, don't listen to what 90% of youtube videos tell to you, they're mostly shills.
Go to a knife shop and pick up a couple ones, see what fits your hand better, see the steel hardness and its heat treatment if possible. Also try to get a knife to match your activities and despite what people says, for most tasks even your kitchen knife will be enough so don't overthink it too much.
But wait a bit and wait for knife snobs to arrive and they will tell you that (((x))) knife is the best for you and call you retard if you disagree.
Anyway feel free to disregard everything I have said, if you really like the knife in your pic go ahead and buy it senpai.

Schrade SCHF51 off amazon is excellent. Full tang, carbon steel, decent sheath, hard to ask for more with costing 32 bucks
>>1026455
>blade's a fucking quarter inch thick
>scandi grind
Also it may be carbon steel, but it's SHIT carbon steel. I sell them at work, someone dropped our display knife onto vinyl tile and the blade broke lengthwise. It's also dull AF from the factory and the sheath is dildos

So what you just bought it and had to take a pic for your bum buddies on Instagram?
Is storm chasing /out/?
Also general /out/ weather, have any of you ever been caught in a tornado?
tornadoes scare the dick out of me. i'm ok with heavy rain, thunderstorms, blizzards, but no nadoes please
>>1044661
I'm eurofag, so no tornadoes ever been seen.
But i am more likely light and landscape chaser.
>>1044661
>have any of you ever been caught in a tornado?
I haven't, but I've been in quite a few shit storms in my life, does that count?
Planning on going on a solo hike soon.
I've only ever gone on hikes with friends, never been on my own. The trail is in good quality and it wouldn't be uncommon to meet other hikers while on the trail. Plus, I've done the trail before with a group.
Anything I need to take into account if I'm going on my own?
>>1044083
like what, for self defence?
other hikers are probably the lowest threat
but if you are concerned, bear spray is the best self defence, and you should already be carrying it.
>>1044089
Nah, not self defence. No bears around either.
I guess I'm just worried about "what if", and there's nobody around to help.
>>1044097
Can you use a map+compass, and do you know how to splint and tourniquet?
If yes, then that's the best you can do barring solid experience. The lack of a lifeline is why solo hiking isnt advised. Especially since you're hiking too, not just camping. It's a difference when you're alone.
Started playing this and really fell in love with the idea of being a fire lookout.
Anyone have experience with it?
Wiki says it takes a real "hardy" person to do it.
Is it that shitty?

It's a shit job that will be automated by remote sensors on drone/satellite.
This shit is literally a dream job of mine.
I've always wanted a small cabin with an incredible view in the mountains, live entirely off the grid with a loyal dog, a small library, and a handful of guns. Maybe internet access.
Check this out. I'd kill for this job

Hey outies, I'm in a slight pickle. I ordered a pair of shoes (pic related) and when I got home I tried them on and they're a bit too small, hurt my feet just sitting down with them. I was curious so I took out the insole (Ortholite) and the shoe fit pretty good. Is it really bad to go hiking without the soles? I'm going on a short trip on sunday and I don't have time to swap them for a new pair
Also if I do decide to swap them I can't do that until monday, and I'll have to use my regular shoes for the trip, and they really aren't made for anything else than looking good
>>1043625
It isn't great for the shoe and it's harder on your feet but if you're just day hiking you'll be fine.
It's a great boot by the way, I have a pair as well
>>1043630
Yeah I figured the seams inside the shoe might take a beating. My feet are a weird shape too so I don't think I should be ordering shoes... Wish the store I bought them at had some info on their opening hours this weekend
I'm obsessed with nature and have been really interested in backpacking lately. However the idea of just walking on a predesignated trail doesn't seem that fun to me. I want to explore the wilderness and not just walk through a trail that thousands of people have already done.
Does anyone else feel this way?
>>1043559
I wouldn't knock it until you try it bud. There's plenty of trails that get pretty wild and hard to follow, often times getting even smaller than game trails - specifically trails that are high on mountains. But I know where you're coming from as well, wanting to get really deep in the /out/doors, secluded, alone, etc. As long as you're decent with navigation you can do this, but I'd highly recommend getting used to following some trails first, both to familiarize yourself with the territory and also see how challenging it can actually be. Once you've done a few deep trails, go try a camp at a place with several easy landmarks to follow.
True wild is disappearing. I worry our grandchildren will have nothing but spindly stretches of manicured trail to explore.
To me, being /out/ means being far from any road, where all decisions and judgement are our own... But trails can take you to some beautiful places - especially old and rarely-used trails, which can give you a sense of closeness to the first people to come that way.
Having wild lands to explore is a privilege. We've reached the end of all our frontiers, and the pressure is only going to keep growing alongside the population. Get /out/ wherever you can and fight for what wilderness we have left.
>>1043559
>i've never done it but i'm going to decide i don't like it anyways
Hey /out/ can anyone identify this plant? They grew rapidly in my garden and some grew outside the fence. My guess is pumpkin from a few years back
catalog
that's not pumpkin you greasy fuck
>>1043342

How do you deal with these motherfuckers? Do you just ignore them? No I don't want to use the cancerous spray.
>>1043093
Icaridin or DEET.
Otherwise, don't go out.
Don't shower for 3 weeks. Or chainsmoke cigarettes. If you're too dainty for either of those, light a cigar and dangle from your neck or pack.

HOW DO I /OUT/ COFFEE?????????
Just got back from Panama City Beach Florida, THE CAMPGROUND IS FULL btw....so we ended up sleeping in the truck at the county pier and walmart parking lots. Since the hurricane was dumping rain on everything we couldnt build a fire and ended up spending $40 on gas station coffee !
I AM NOT BUYING A COLEMAN STOVE because if STHTF or Hurricane all the fuel will be gone from the shelves, also FUCK COLEMAN STOVES
so my question is
HOW THE FUCK DO I MAKE COFFEE ???
tl;dr my gf wont drink instant coffee
>>1042923
Cold press it.
Get a less hoity-toity girlfriend and drink instant coffee.
Stop drinking coffee.
Get better at fire making.
>>1042923
>$40 on gas station coffee
How much fucking coffee do you drink in a day? Jesus, a full 40oz thermos of gas station coffee is like $1.99 here, and a "normal" 10oz cup is $0.79.
Either you drink enough coffee to fuel the entire Manhattan Project or one of you wanted "specialty" coffee you can't make on a campfire anyway.
>>1042930
$1.79 X 2 cups 3-4 times daily, plus the expenses associated with entering a Tom Thumb store in Florida, yeah $15/day for coffee, Bed Bath and Beyond has a 12 volt coffee pot,
>>1042927
Cold Press doesnt extract the caffeine,
>>1042930

What do you guys think about renting electronic fat bikes
http://newlevel.si/
My friend an I are staring a business in Slovenia.
Does this have any potential?
>>1042747
I didn't think anyone made an E-fat bike yet.
E-bikes are super gay but they do seem to be the thing with non-mountainbikers right now so cash in I guess!
Yeah you can go up the stairs and everything so even people who are not so fit can ride on mountains
