where do I go backpacking in the winter??
5 posts and 1 images submitted.

Where to go depends on so many things, the amount of snow and the severity of the weather and if you are on the northern hemisphere somewhere, thick forests or not, is it mountain or not, yadda yadda.

Go to forest with snow shoes like summer? Or just ski/skate over frozen lakes to small islands or something? Or travel to countries currently not in winter.

Whereabouts are you located?

If you're on the west side of the Cascades you can pretty much just continue as normal, with better rain gear and a lower maximum elevation.

One tool opinion with a ulu is pretty strange. That particular blade is loved up north for animal processing.
I buy into the one tool option when I'm on foot and saving weight for a scout or long distance / multiple day hike.
Normally on my person is a fixed blade, a laplander, fire kit , and possibles pouch. In my bag is some sort of gransfors axe depending on the weather and what I'm looking to accomplish while in the woods.
But if im on a day hike or harvesting berries or roots then I save weight by bringing just one large fix blade such as a Hudsonsbay knife. Then my pack will have a tarp, stainless water bottle, and a little bit of food. Which is perfect if I get caught out over night.
I don't buy into the anti batoning fad. I've split seasoned oak, hickory, and locust with just a knife before just fine. And do so with everything from $50 condors to much more expensive blades like habilis and winkler.
Tldr, I prefer tool heavy but I do use the one tool option quite a bit for day hikes or overnighters. Just use a quality blade and know how to use it.

>One tool opinion with a ulu is pretty strange.

It's supposed to be fitted with a handle and become some sort of axe.

There's a video somewhere of how it works.

Country is so small, could literally drive 30 minutes on a bike to a town if need for sluts.

Fair warning, taking care of plants and animals is HARD work. I have a similar dream and plan on working on a couple farms to learn the skills.

Yeah the mother nature channel. Start at the trail head then walk a few miles until the reception gets good.

I also recommend the river channel. It's best watched with an antenna. You'll see some amazing fish.

What bushcraft skills have you brought into your home or on property from your experiences in the great outdoors, /out/?

For me,

•Learning to field dress wild game then becoming proficient in field dressing farm animals.
•Learning to whittle around the campfire then being able to whittle to make things to sell on etsy.
•Learned to dry laundry without a dryer then always dry laundry on a line outside at home.
•Learning to baton firewood outdoors then using that skill in the kitchen.
•Learning what plants to forage for then using that to plant those plants in my garden.

>Learning to field dress wild game then becoming proficient in field dressing farm animals.
It'll become pretty boring and disgusting after your third pig or tenth chicken.
>Learning to whittle around the campfire then being able to whittle to make things to sell on etsy.
You whittle for your mental health, not for commerce. Also there are professionals working with wood, good luck with beating years of experience
>Learned to dry laundry without a dryer then always dry laundry on a line outside at home.
Okay, thats kinda something you should've known from everyday life
>Learning to baton firewood outdoors then using that skill in the kitchen.
Buy a small axe, ignore knife batoning shitposters.
>Learning what plants to forage for then using that to plant those plants in my garden.
A lot of wild plants grow only in the wild because of reasons, also good luck recognizing when to harvest plants at the correct time and then drying the seeds and then finding out when to plant the seeds in your garden and so on.

Its not that I disapprove of your plans, they just seem a bit idealistic for a newbie.

seconding the Green, with a slight trim to fit my Vasques they're incredible

I only had one pair of boots that finally became uncomfortable after years on the job every day...I ended up grabbing a set of Dr Scholls gel inserts or something at wally world, it made quite the difference. So if your footwear is uncomfortable, probably anything would be an improvement. I have heard good things about green superfeet also.

I was wondering if it would be possible to install a stove jack on this tent for a small wood stove. Preferably with the jack being on the side of the tent and not the middle. If it must be up top of the tent, how would it be set up to allow two to three people sitting at once inside? Any advice would be great! http://www.ebay.com/itm/coleman-6-man-easy-instant-setup-family-camping-cabin-tent-new-orange-/400294636326

Hey /out/laws, I'm looking for an everyday backpack that isn't too big. I want something with a sealed cooler section for fish, when I go fishing or buy them from the market and transport them. Also a bottle holder on the side.

Something made of decent quality that ships internationally as well.
