Are they usually 5mm wide?

Are the leaves under your hand part of the same plant as the berries?

Going to pick up 6 dehydrated ones for when I go camping in a few weeks. Gonna be camping for three days, and while I plan on cooking some meat and vegetables out there, I'll need the extra calories.

What's the best tasting brands and individual meals?

Bump?
>>
I liked mountain house beef stroganoff, lasagna, and the breakfast skillet (though that one is a bit of a mushy messs, still tasted good). I tried mountain house chili mac as well but the beans didn't rehydrate very well. I haven't tried the other brands.

Heather's Choice.

Not cheap but easily the best I have eaten.

Among the lower priced ones: Pack It Gourmet

I'm trying to improve my botanical knowledge, and have been taking pictures of plants in my area in the hopes of identifying them. A few I recognize, but if you find outsole have any info or advice it would be excellent.

That's a plant alright.
>>
You need some background understanding of botany terms and a good field guide, possibly a small field microscope, and a ruler to really identify plants. Its the same way you identify insects in the field.

I've worked for them at two different parks and have also worked for the forest service, ask away.

Any interesting stories you'd like to share?

What states did you work in?

Do you prefer working for NPS or Forestry Service? My ex works with the Forestry Service.

Hey /out/

I'm not sure if this is relevant to the board but I've browsed here a long time (mostly lurking for tips / guides) and I finally have something to post in return.

Last year I bought pic related, a church building on an island in hebrides (aka West Scotland) and in late January 2017 I'll be moving there to live full-time. I've spent time and money renovating it and preparing it in the hope of becoming at least somewhat self-sufficient eventually.

So far I have:

>installed solar panels
>prepared a chicken coop for eggs and white meat
>prepared grounds for crops and installed a polytunnel + windbreak
>installed water storage unit (no running water, though fresh water streams nearby)
>stocking up on tinned food

Any suggestions or questions about my plan?

Thanks again for being a super entertaining and helpful board.

Nice. How you gonna generate money for the stuff you're not (yet) self-sufficient in?
>>
>>907801
I have lived a monk-like lifestyle since graduating and working full-time at 21. The property was cheap since it's not designed for living in and has no heating / running water etc, so I had enough money left over to buy solar panels and so on. My uncle has a ton of tools since he's a carpenter and he travelled up there with me on two occasions since he thought it was a fun thing to do.

tldr: savings

As for making money, I have zero interest in doing that for at least a year. Maybe I'll have to return to the mainland and find a job at some point, but my intention is to detach myself as best I can from society for the next twelve months. There's a library in a town called Daliburgh so I'll cycle there if I feel the urge to shitpost or whatever.

2. Look at the TPWD page and read about public lands.

The entire fucking state. We have 4 million+ native deer and about 150k wild exotics roaming around.

take a bible so you can beg for forgiveness for when those things rip through your ass

in all seriousness a fuck ton of water, more than you think. Rice cakes, energy bar, nuts are good
>>
>>907338
Just get Cliff bars,Trail Mix, or dry food like rice and beans. I mean, don't get me wrong, I've had some great gas station food here and there but there's not point to intentionally giving yourself diarrhea while camping.

>>907352
Also yes, bring a lot of water. Don't bring Gatorade or sugary drinks.

Looks like lots of people participating in the Secret Santa already sent some gifts so hopefully we will see those by the end of the week. Dank memes via post.

Still waiting for help with the beginner guides on the Pastebin. I put a little saltwater one in there, but I want to do a river one possibly and trout. Skid typed up a saltwater guide so enjoy the autism.

Thinking about picking up a new hobby? Want to get a memecaster? Haven't mastered the Palomar knot? Click here!

Instead of buying a new rod get some different lures. Buy some x rap long casts, they're better for surf rods since you can actually load them up.

well $140 well spent on lures.

Tries soft plastics for the first time. Pretty nice. Definitely a lot more technique going into it than I'm used to.

But apparently the best cod catcher in my area swears by them. So gonna give em a good going this weekend.

Also, found a good option for flicking big lures. $160 Willsons Magnum. Much cheaper than the Venom and the local tackleshop owner reckons they'e grouse.

In /ckg/ we discuss our latest cheap knives that seem best bang for buck at the moment - since the last /ckg/ thread lasted so well.

After getting the Ganzo G753 axis lock (which serves me well, except it gets dull a bit often) I decided to get this trapper lockback 440A trapper lockback from Rough Rider.

Any opinions on lockback knives, or trapper knives, or RR knives? It seemed a steal at $14.

How do you guys keep your beer from freezing in the wintertime? I'm going car camping with a buddy, and I'm at a loss as to what to do.

In the summer, I'd pack a cooler to keep it at the optimal temperature. Do they sell heated coolers? Do I heat my beer up on the fire before consumption? What the fuck do I do, /out/?

>>907096
Build a pit of rocks and keep it in a stream or lake
>>
>>907103
Does that work to keep it liquid when it's below freezing? I've heard of doing that in the summer to keep it cool, but I guess it might work in the winter if the water hasn't frozen.
>>
>>907104
I've never done it, but logic would seem to indicate that since the beer isn't moving in the bottle, it would freeze if the surrounding water is below 0 C

Where are you located OP? Because in Florida, I bow fish armored catfish in neighborhood canals with sharpened dowels and a shitty bow I got out of a garage sale.
Yeah, it's probably not what you're looking for but its still fun to do on weekends for <20$
>>
>>907068
You could probably get a regular bow and just get specialized arrows. I'm getting the samik sage recurve for Christmas. I'm hoping to hunt big game.

Random:
Hello, most of my family has been in farming for years. I live in Canada at the moment where my parents have dairy farmed however most of my relatives in the Netherlands run flower farms and I would also like to get involved.

Presently I'm studying software engineering, but I'm switching to a more agricultural university so I can hopefully get a dual degree in Software Engineering and Horticulture or something along those lines.

How do I get into flower farming? Where do I start? What kinds of classes should I take?

I want to start a farm in somewhere like Kenya because there's not much of a flower industry here in Canada.

Thanks,

Anon

If your relatives already run flower farms, why not ask them?

If you want a distributor, just Google to buy large quantity of flowers and contact the wholesaler about selling your stuff.

If you want to know about farming you don't need to go to uni, just get a book on the sub. Or better yet, get someone off of craiglist to teach you.

Just buy seeds and plant them, go to any wholesaler and sell your stuff.

Layer up motherfucker. Generally what you're looking for is part of a suit that costs 1000+ USD
Two puffy's a flannel and a shell plus a warm base layer might work and run for 500-700$ total depending on what brands and features you look for

Not the answer I was hoping for.

What US-made outdoors gear is worth buying?

Context: I'm a Eurofag due to visit the States (finally) in Spring next year.

I doubt I will be doing a huge amount of /out/ing there (as the trip is looking like more of a roadtrip), but I do want to buy some quality American made gear.

Why?

Because you hardly find US made anything in the EU, and it's always like 50% more expensive than in the States.

And there is something about outdoor gear made in the US that gives me a semi.

So - any advice?

What is still made in the US & still good?

This far I've got:
Benchmade
Spyderco
Buck
Leatherman (got a TT300 already)

Any of the other 3 good? Which models?

Thanks for any advice rendered.

a Euro
