Who here lives innawoods? How do you do it?
>>918141
Get a job, Jamal.
>>918141
Call me racist but I would draw on a person in the woods that looked like that. 9/10 odds he's wanted.
>>918196
That's not racist, it's just smart.
The longer I'm alive and the more people I meet, the more I realize there is a reason these stereotypes exist.
Can I eat this weed?
I live in central california in a biome apparently called this: http://www.laspilitas.com/nature-of-california/communities/coastal-sage-scrub
The plant just sprouted like mad over the course of a week of of nowhere in an extremely wet climate. I always hear hipster weeaboos talk about how eating weeds is the new thing, but in CA literally every "weed" is probably actually what I should be eating instead of the crap I go out to buy. I will literally walk out the door and buy a cubic foot of vegetables when I have dozens of cubic meters of weeds all around me. Such a thing makes no sense to me any longer.
I think it is either Indian Lettuce or Milk Thistle. I have no idea how to tell if it is leguminous. Are there visible pods of nitrogen-fixing bacteria on the roots if it is?
Why don't we have a
>>>/plants/
instead of /out/?

it is not a legume. legumes typically have pinnately compound or bipinnately compound leaves (pic related). All legumes come from the fabaceae family. Digging them up to look for root nodules is not a particularly good way to identify them, but their physical traits are not typically hard to spot.
What you have DOES look like some kind of thistle. There probably are some that are edible, but im not sure what kind of thistle that actually is. The best resources for weed identification in california are probably the california invasive plant councils website (http://www.cal-ipc.org/) and the cal flora site (https://www.calflora.org).
General rule of thumb is that soft fleshy bits of plants like young leaves are edible unless they have milky sap. Milky sap tends to be associated with poisons, though there are some plants like the edible fig which have milky sap and are fine to eat. Off the top of my head in the central valley there is only really going to be one group of weedy plants that are going to kill you, the Solanaceae family. Datura specifically, but I believe there are a few others solanacea species floating around. Their flower shapes tend to be relatively to generically identify. Also they taste horrible so that is a clue. Tree tobacco is another one, but its small shrub to tree size.
My favorite leafy wild edible that you are going to be able to find is miners lettuce. Tastes like spinach. Grows abundantly in wet and shady areas from late winter into early summer. In my experience most wild plants tastes pretty bad or mediocre, and thats why we dont farm them. Miners lettuce actually is a farmed crop though. There are a lot of varieties of mustard and false mustards that are edible, but they are horseradish hot and you will only want a few leaves for seasoning.
Anyway, research the plants you want to try, if it tastes bad dont eat it, and if you eat it only eat a little at a time at first.
>>918104
Looks like lambs quarters or stinging nettle. Hard to tell when the plant isn't flowering. Might be first year. Also hard to tell with the plant stuffed inside that mason jar.

you should prolly eat shit lol
I have just bought a Mora Robust, and am keen to blue it, as all of my previous carbon steel knives rusted. I would like to vingar patina it, but not keen for sharpening it after, as I heard blueing can dull the blade.
Tips or tales for blueing/patina-ing a Mora?
>>918063
>I heard blueing can dull the blade.
unless that's talking about some form of heat treating, it should have zero effect on sharpness....I know Birchwood Casey makes a kit for guns, but it should work fine
simplest option: wrap blade in paper towel, wet with vinegar, stick in bag, wait few hours to overnight, wipe off residue, done
go get some mineral oil and lightly wipe some on after every cleaning/use
if the blade is not in great shape, use some wet dry sandpaper, working up to several thousand grit, then patina....a good time to sharpen is after using the sandpaper
>>918063
Tannic acid is great for bluing knives..
Just let it develop naturally. Don't be a poser.
PROTIP: you can just cut up some fruit and "forget" to wash the blade. It will develop a patina and you can still tell the cool kids "I dunno why my knife looks that way".
Hello /out/ists
I want to buy a camo water-proof jacket under 60 euros.
Camos might be flectarn or woodland.

What jackets can u recommend?
Frogg Toggs™

Might want to look at hunting gear. lots of styles of waterproof jackets/coats from light shell to full body suit or parka.
You will probably spend 100$+ (80 euro?)
Serious question, /out/. I skied all day yesterday, like 12 hours and 39,000 vertical feet (according to the epic app). I don't fly out until tomorrow. DO I GO AGAIN TODAY?
Lifts open in 2 hours, barely a 90 min drive.
Not really sure why that's upside down... so more snow porn

I hate you, iPhone
Hey /out/, I don't have much outdoors experience, except for small hunting outings during deer season. I've gotten curious though, about taking a long trip out into the wilderness. I don't mean just hiking, though that's sure to be a part of it, I mean like, over the summer going deep into the wilderness and just living for a few weeks, secluded. Where's a good place in eastern/central United States to do this?
>>917548
For you, 15mi off the coast of Florida, please tie porkchops to legs and neck for flotation.
>>917591
Well aren't you a totally useless waste of space. Why be such a faggot edge lord? You're not funny and your post wasn't even well written. Off yourself.
>>917548
I can only speak for Michigan but we've got some great national forests here. It wouldn't be hard to disappear deep innawoods in the Huron of Hiawatha national forest. Bring a .22 for small game and a rod for some fish and you shouldn't have a problem with staying in the forest for a few weeks.

How do divers handle sharks?

This is the sole reason I'll never go scuba diving. Even seeing them in YouTube videos gives me anxiety desu
Hey, /out/. First time on this board.
I have always had a fascination with the outdoors, especially exploring. But being born and raised and living in Boston my entire life has taken a toll on my sense of adventure.
What I would really like to do; is to explore the wilderness and settlements in Yukon and Alaska. As well as see the northern lights; or even live there. Also as a history buff, I studied the Klondike Gold Rush extensively in school; which I think will always fascinate me.
But my concern is, I don't know how to plan such a trip, and how I would travel from place to place. It's a total pipe dream right now, and was wondering if anyone here's been up there before; and could offer some advice or provide information/personal experiences about their time there.
Thanks guys

Shameless bump
Well if you want to go to the Yukon River, you would need to fly into Fairbanks preferably, and then you need to rent a car at a special place that will allow you to take the car up there. Once you rent the car you drive a couple hundred miles to the Yukon River. You can stop buy, get some food, since there is nothing else within 200 miles. And then you can camp there or keep going. If you keep going you can go to coldfoot, Wiseman, or deadhorse. Wiseman, where I have been, has some good off trail hiking around, beautiful scenery. It's on the outskirts of gates of the arctic, which is very nice. Lots of hiking and wilderness near Wiseman, town of 14 people. You can also drive to the tundra, a flat place which is very mushy to walk on. Expensive trip though. Pic related, wilderness outside Wiseman.

That's absolutely gorgeous. Thanks so much anon, really big help.
I purchased a Bear Archery Cruzer RTH bow a few weeks ago, and the store (who was going to order it in for me) just contacted me to let me know that Bear are no longer making the bow, and the Bear Cruzer G2 is coming in January 2017.
So, currently I'm considering;
- Bear Cruzer G2
- Bowtech Fuel
- Diamond Infinite Edge
I can get them all for around the same price.
From my research, the Fuel looks like a better bow than the Infinite Edge. Obviously, I have no idea what the Cruzer G2 will be like yet.
Will be using the bow for target shooting and some hunting.
Would appreciate some guidance on what I should choose!
get a prime
I can't break down those three bows for you, all have a good reputation as far as I know.
I can tell you both of my daughters shoot Bowtechs and are accurate and deadly.
I doubt you will be disappointed with any of them. Just pick and get to shooting.
>>917310
Thanks.
I went with the Fuel.
Hey /out/
i started to hike not so long ago and i love it.
But i have a small pack and want to upgrade.
A friend of mine suggested me CREEK 65 (pic related), and i wanted to ask, is it a good pack or are there better ones that aren't expensive.
I have the Creek 65, it is really good. Specifically the ability to hide my self in the bag, it doubles as a sleeping bag!
Btw im a mouse.

>>917213
The only way for you to get a proper answer for your question is to physically go and try packs on until you find one that works for you. Take into account several factors, including but not limited to
> how it fits you personally
> closure type
> material and stitching quality
> organization (compartmentalized? access points? compression straps?)
Ask an attendant for help choosing a pack, they're paid to assist you and would probably rather do that than stock shelves and sweep the floor.
Hey /out/ any opinions on this book?
>>917132
It's not wrong but I'm sure more than one person has gotten killed thinking they could survive just having read this.
Also, I continue to object to muh nogunz bushcraft.
>>917132
Reading about bushcraft is for tryhard stay-at-homes who watch this stupid shit on tv and youtube
>>917132
I haven't read the book but I've watched a lot of his YouTube videos and while he's not Kochanski he appears to be a guy with common sense. That being said, why don't you just buy 'Bushcraft' by Mors Kochanski? That guy spent his adult life learning and teaching bushcraft back when bushcraft was not a thing.
>>917159
There's not a single skill I can think of that you can't improve by reading. If you go out and learn by doing, you can easily waste hours, days or even years learning something you could have learnt in seconds by reading.
