We can't convince a pussy like you to go /out/

Fucking pussy.
>>

Honestly, how do you guys even set up camp sites? I've seen some of you post really cool areas of the woods you've turned into second homes, others post their "go to" spot where they can pitch a tent whenever they want..

What's the secret?

Yeah, guess I'm a pussy for not going back and fighting him for property rights.

So my friends and I are planning to go hiking/camping somewhere in the US at the end of march. Where should we go that wouldn't be excessively cold?

Any limitations?
>>
>>927670
Fuck you, I'm looking for suggestions. I'm not from California so I don't have a strong sense of how warm Yosemite/Sequoia/Joshua Tree would be.
Last spring we drove to Big Bend NP from Chicago, that was pretty cool.
>>927671
No particular limitations - would be nice to not have to carry our entire trip's water supply with us (like Big Bend). Also relatively accessible (<10 hrs drive) from a major airport would be ideal.

How do I write a motivational letter for an /out/ related volunteer project?
Need to send it with my CV.

Don't think I have much chance to be accepted honestly, since I have no experience in the field.

>>
>>927327
what's the project?
>>
>>927339
5 months volunteering in a forestry project.

Building trails, clearing woods etc etc.
>>
>>927370
does not sounds like you need a lot of experience to that as a volunteer.

i would start with what trails meant to you (which is your why and shows them you are physically capable) move on to the joy helping those you will never meet find that some joy. building for the future with a little the parks belong to everyone this is my way of giving back to something that brought be so much joy etc

maybe throw something comparing building a trial to hiking one (hard work pay off self driven)

What brand of sunglasses should I look for when buying online that don't cost an assload? I bought a pair of cycling sunglasses from my local sports store but they barely even block the sun, it just has an orange tint that makes everything look like it's coated in piss.

Buying from Amazon.co.uk is preferred but I can buy from China if it's really worth it.

So it's pre-tornado season where I am, and I'm looking to get into... Not really storm chasing, but rather storm watching for my area. Just being on the lookout if shit goes down, warning people, and helping anyone affected. So, I guess following the storm and picking up after it as much as possible. We get hit March-ish through July, usually, so there is a bit of time but I wanna be prepared beforehand.

I am doing my research, and I have several questions. Mainly, if you are able to provide care for an injured person, are you able to do so without a license/authority? I'm getting my CPR license soon, but I'm not sure I can go through EMT training. Are you protected by the Good Samaritan law in this situation?

Also, would just a cell phone and a radar be enough, or should I invest in a HAM radio? I'm not an idiot, and I'm not going to get up this thing's ass, but is it worth it to call something in on the radio or just stick to the phone? I love weather, and I'd love to study and do more with tornadoes and especially ice storms, but right now I'm not equipped or experienced enough.

Other than that, general extreme storm thread, I guess. Share stories and whatnot. If you're a chaser, what equipment do you use? Or do you think it's a bullshit fad?

Hold on, slow down.

First thing is you should try to join the Skywarn program as a spotter. They'll help get you up to speed and send you alerts.

Second thing is you're gonna need to start learning meteorology, and lots of it. The weather services don't bother themselves with exactly where a tornado is going to touch down, so you'll need to learn how to find and interpret weather maps to pinpoint likely funnel clouds.

As for the legal question, IANAL, but first, what state are you in?
>>
>>927129
Will do. I'm all for learning as much as I can about meteorology.

The area I'm looking to cover is in north-central (ish) Texas. Dallas/Ft. Worth program on Skywarn. Montague and Cooke county, mostly. It's not a very big area, but it's home. A good portion of it is countryside. I know the roads like the back of my hand, so I could navigate if I was in a team.
>>
i would look into ham radio. Spre cell battery and put it in ziploc bag. Ham will without cell towers and there are teams of volonteur ham operators who practice for, and help in case of natural disasters, but there is a lot to learn and is illegal if you dont have a licence. for exam you can learn online. there is also channel on yt called commsprepper

What would it take to make a cabin in the winter in an isolated area sustainable? How would you do that?
11 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
you make a small lean-to with a fireplace so you're able to insulate it and seal it effectively to hold heat enough to survive winter. then you build a cabin in the spring.
>>
>>926973
wait you don't mean "make a cabin", you mean "make a cabin sustainable in the winter". well fuck I think you need to start in the summer. for one thing you'll need several cords of firewood (a typical colonial homestead in the USA burned ~200 cords of wood per year, for example).

no idea if your scenerio requires hunting and growing food, or if you're just going to live in a cabin but still go to the grocery store.
>>
>>926979
What? I have a hunting cabin, I live in Alaska, and you only need about 5 cords or so. Is 200 cords the entire town?

Spam chunks in the pancakes for sure. Fry em for a minute and then toss the cubes in the batter. Put some of the whiskey in the syrup. Might need to add moar sugar too.

moved to germany a few months ago and need to pick up some new gear for riding this winter. Does anyone know of a european equivalent of Dogfunk/backcountry? I'm specifically looking for a one-a-day style website (brociety, whiskeymilitia, chainlove), I'm an indecisive cunt and having a single piece of gear offered to me to do some research on is a lot better than thumbing through a big catalogue.

Any tips would be appreciated, I'm new to /out/ but didn't see a wiki in the sticky but if there's something like that around here please let me know

at the same time, if anyone has gear recommendations for me in terms of some nice freeride boots/bindings I'm all ears. All my stuff is super old, as I only really invested in freestyle stuff when I was doing a lot of riding and beat the shit out of it (layer seperation, core shots etc).

The only issue i have is that the boots are beat and don't hold my heel well. Cartels are fkd up but still fine, I just assume there are some benefits to updating 10 year old hardware

No, you heard a shot. The correct word is hear. Just because "here" sounds the same, does not mean it has the same meaning.

Thoughts on this? It's a local story but it has huge implications for land use and access across the American West. Is this a sign of things to come if Republicans get their way and federal public lands are privatized?
