Post cool /out/ stuff
I've recently taken up Walking in my spare time and also to take more photos
i currently don't have alot of equipment, only a cheap pair of walking shoes and a 3 in 1 jacket.
What would you recommend as a big investment into the gear side of things, boots/backpacks etc
thanks, here's something i took near where i live
>>925491
Boots - water resistant (if not completely water proof) with ankle support
Knife - an entry level folder is enough for now
Monopod - not as good as a trekking pole or tripod, but it serves both purposes
I'm assuming you already have a camera case, if you're just doing day hikes you shouldn't need something bigger than the average camera bag to carry extra lenses and water.
>>925491
A decent day pack. Comfortable pants and socks. Hydration bladder optional.
>>925491
Sounds like you're all set.
Unless you are actually having a problem that gear can fix, like shin splints from shitty shoes or too cold/hot/wet, buying gear won't make walking any more enjoyable.
What are some good reads for camping?
The bible
>>925429
Are you asking for /out/ themed books, or good books to read in the solitude of the woods?
Walden by Henry David Thoreau
Most of you are from USA and Europe. To my fellow south americans i ask, how do you cope with SO MANY insects?
>>925241
Burning tires and standing in the smoke.
>>925242
Thats how you get cancer dude.
>>925242
well, i have tried burning wet wood and grass, makes so much smoke that it actually keep the flies away for a second
Have any of you done mushrooms and explore the woods in the middle of the night?
>>925138
No, but it sounds like alot of fun. Have you OP?
>>925138
Yeah many times OP, mushrooms aren't fun in the city or indoors, and tripping in public during day light can make one nervous.
>>925138
Doing that in two days. Never done anything stronger than pot before. What am I in for?
You need around 3500 calories/day to keep your weight.
Is it possible to get enough food while staying in wilderness?
How?
Reminder:
3500 calories = 25 squirrels
OR 3 rabbits
OR 1/3 of a raccoon
OR 1/20 of a deer
OR over 6kg of blueberries
OR almost 3kg of clams.
3500kcal to keep weight? Maybe in obese murica. Average person needs just 2500
I dare anyone to eat 6 kg of blueberries in 12 hours.
>>924991
Just 2500?
When working physically in a forest (making a camp/hunting) or when it's cold you need those calories.
>Male athletes who engage in vigorous physical activity, especially endurance sports, more than the average active man can require more than 3,000 calories per day.

that is called farming. homesteading is idiots planting beets and raising chickens on a quarter acre.

Thinking about picking up a Swamp Rat Rodent Waki for some light brush trimming and camping trips, any thoughts on this piece? Other recommendations? Budget is $1500 max

Can anyone identify this tree?
It's been cut down, so this google maps photo from 2008 is all that's left of it.

holy shit it is
I just picked this up for a road trip . Seems pretty cheap, does anyone know if the plastic is safe?
It does not even say for potable water anywhere on the packaging.
Will this give me bitch tits?
>>923986
All plastic leaches chemicals into the water. Some of those chemicals are more studied than others. The higher the heat the more it leaches. The water will eventually taste a bit like plastic.
>>923986
I've had these crack along a seam more than once. Not fun.
>>923986
Those things are like $30. so overpriced.
I had good success reusing the bag from the bagged wine. they are hella durable. Its a bitch to get the spout out, but they work well. sure, little of wine taste left over, but nothing to complain about
Can someone redpill me on Arizona?
I'm moving from a Southern state in the heart of Dixie. I've never been North of the Mason-Dixon, and I've never been west of Arkansas and Louisiana. I've been camping, hunting, and fishing since I was a boy. I camp almost every weekend in one of the national forests here.
What am I looking at in terms of camping? How tough is it to get food? Usually I'll just hunt some squirrel, catch some fish, or pick some nuts and fruit. I'm guessing that's not going to happen in a desert.
>>923800
You know there is more to AZ than desert right? Im in the mountains. Theres plenty of squirrels, rabbits, deer and elk (not as much as the South). There just isnt any water.
>>923827
I figured. But how much variation is there? Within three hours, I can go to the beach, the mountains, swamps, heavy forests, rivers, etc.
Lived in AZ all my life. Typically you can get from desert (pic related, not OP's pic) to forest, to the one small area by the California border that has sand dunes like OP's pic in 3 hours for any particular stretch.
What do you bring with you when you go camping to eat and stuff? I saw something cool recently, that I might actually buy but I'm hoping to find something better.
Browsing kickstart I saw this cool thing: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2008678327/the-muncher-titanium-multi-utensil
But I also saw this junk : /1132834440/tactical-bottle-opening-hot-sauce-dispensing-spork
I doubt kickstarter is a good source for something like this so can anyone suggest something better? Should I just stick with my basic stuff I carry normally?
I just get a fork and spoon from my kitchen.
>>923703
This
Why spend money on basic shit like that to save an ounce and a minimal amount of space
Folding titanium spoon. But desu it's maximum autismo. But it fits inside my pot.
If I can't eat it with a spoon I make chopsticks or eat with my hands.
Hey all, pretty new to camping, I know some fundamentals and basic surival but had a few questions.
>Assuming I have no gear, what do I need (my buddies are bringing tents and tarps along with their individual bags)
>What brands do I stick away from
>What is some advice you wish you knew when you first went camping
>How is Mountain House, pic related?
>>922855
This post is pretty general, Anon.
Where are you going, when, and for how long? With how many other people? Campground or backcountry?
Is someone else taking care of all the food, or are you expected to bring along what you'll eat?
Right now, I'd seriously say just go to your local library. They'll probably have a couple books on camping that should get you the basic info.
>>922878
>going to a library instead of googling
ISHYGDDT
I'm guessing you got invited to go car camping. Let them know it's your first time, and ask what you'll need.
If they're going backpacking, let them know you'll pass, and then lurk here for a few months, spend another few months building a kit that fits your needs, and is appropriate for the group you're going with.
ITT things you would do while /out/ if you knew you would never be caught
