Hey sc/cout/s. Recently moved to Pasadena, TX. Traveling isn't really an issue, but; good places to go /out/ in Texas? Talking hiking, hunting, etc.
>>931712
hunting season is over, except for spring turkey and maybe duck. but I dont hunt duck so not sure. the three big national forests are nice, sam houston is about an hour from stinkadena, davy crocket is just 30 minutes more. you can aways go walk around san jacinto and get some texas history, carpetbagger. it's 10 minutes away, but not much hiking.
brazos bend is a well kept state park with hiking about 45 minues south. if you have never seen aligators, they will be out in april. they also have telescope that is open to the public on some weekends.
or you could just go to the tpwd website and fuck around. there are alot of nice state parks in the hill country.
>>931712
Reminder that Texas is worthless in every way.
Cheers.

Thanks anon, you're excellent.
Ever been through Big Bend? What about hog hunting? I heard Calwell Co. offers a 10 dollar bounty on ears/tails if you sit through an hour seminar.
Hey everyone, i'm a graduate student doing thesis-related work down in Central Texas over riparian habitat. I've been surveying an approx. 15mi stretch of river for the past year. Kayaks and tubes are the best means of traversing the river since its quite shallow, so i've been borrowing a pair of kayaks from both my advisor and a friend. I'm currently looking into getting my own kayak, so here's the run-down:
>My advisor's kayak is an emotion stealth 11, which is moderately comfortable and has good storage
>sort of a bitch to move around, kinda on the large side for the river
>Friend's kayak is some pelican; just over 8ft long
>I hate the pelican now with a passion, most uncomfortable thing ever, plus can't track for shit
So currently i'm looking for something around 10ft, that's comfortable, can carry a good amount of equipment, and is less than $800. Any thoughts/input?

Could you elaborate? I'm not seeing any below 1k (plus it looks like most have foot-paddles which wouldn't work for the river).
Floridian here. how do you deal with spider webs getting in your face when walking through trees? it's happened to me a couple times before where i walk straight into a spider web that's practically invisible. is there any way around this?
>>931649
We have a species of large, nocturnal orb weaver spiders here in East TX that love to string their webs up between two trees at around head height... Walking through the woods at night here you're constantly running into their webs. By constantly I mean every 30 - 50 feet or so. Often times the spider will then frantically crawl around on your body after you hit their web and the fuckers have a habit of biting you on the neck or arm as well. I hate them. I usually only walk around the woods at night when I'm hunting wild pigs so I try to hold my rifle vertically out in front of me when I'm walking through areas that will probably have spiderwebs. That way the rifle hits the web first and not my face. You might try the same with a walking stick or something.
>>931649
i just use a walking stick thats taller than me. A stick such as this is also useful for navigating the vine infested woods of eastern north carolina.
>>931649
keep a stick in front of your face or do a karate chop type motion with your hand. Stupid but works. Also take your time
where are some of the spookiest places to go outdoor in america?
>>931631
A furmeet.
>>931631
Eh, it really depends. I know from personal experience that a secluded campsite in West TX can go from "comfy af" to "Jesus Christ I'm literally shaking" with nothing more than a single shriek from a nearby cougar.

>>931646
Kinda reminds me of a fox scream, just a lot longer.
Hey, be happy it's making noise. A silent Cougar is more scary than the one you hear.
I remember camping in WA with a friend. He and I are sitting around the camp fire, enjoying some beer and bud.
Friend gets up to go use the restroom. He gets up and prob walked only a few feet before turning on his flash light, a Cougar was about 20 feet from us, just sitting and staring.
Startled the shit out of me, cause it was right there. Friend and I yell at it and throws some small pieces of wood towards it, it just sits there, not giving a fuck. Finally left when friend shot off his shotgun as a warning shot.
I didn't sleep well at all that night. Prob cause the cougar made me think of my own cat. How cats are ninjas, that was a big ass ninja cat that could of snuck up and fucked us up. Rather deal eith bears, at least I can hear bears, so not much of a surprise when you hear them walking around.
>>931631
Most scariest thing in the woods, Is your own imagination. Let that shit run wild and you could be in a world of hurt.
I went hiking one time in winter with an aspie, and he insisted on using only space blankets (he had like 4 of them) to keep warm at night. Of course this worked like shit and he had to stoke the fire every hour, but he clearly got this idea from somewhere
Is space blanket camping an actual thing? Why the fuck can't these people just bring a comfy sleeping bag?
Comes from the survivalist/prepper fags. They think space blankets are the end-all-be-all of keeping warm in the wilderness.
>>931587
I've never seen anyone actually use a space blanket.

Do they think radiation is the only form of heat transfer?

There are 6 people online. Are you sure you joined the right thing?
How does a wimpy grown man with no outdoor experience, who was pampered by a single mother as a child reliably learn about actual survival skills after passing adulthood?
I'm medically disqualified for military service and was never in any scouting groups as a child. Other than watching internet series and winging it, are there any alternatives that would offer an actual mentor to help learn these things? Or am I over-analyzing this and is being /out/ literally just figuring shit out yourself and hoping you don't get maimed by a boar in the process?
Help me understand this please /out/. I don't want to die as an office drone.
just figure out how to start a fire and you can go anywhere. ive got no experience but i can at least fucking walk on a trail lol
>>931491
Practice what you see in the vids in your backyard, when you feel confident you can do those skills in a safe environment then you can go try them on the wild.
dude. All you have to do is get a pack and go on day hikes that start to turn into overnights after a few weeks. Matches, a knife, water and food, simple cookware, rain jacket, first aid, flashlight, tarp, and rope are all you need at most for starting out. You don't have to buy most of this stuff or get stupidly expensive items either. For hikes you could easily just take water and some crackers and enjoy yourself
nohikez are always paranoid of animals. So get bear spray and a solid staff. A gun of course always helps. Eventually you'll want to stay the night some time, so set up a good tarp and tent with a fire from wood you've gathered/chopped. That's it, have fun
What kind of machete is this?
probably metal
Looks like a machete
It's the kind with a handle.
Hi all.
I’m hoping to get some advice about ski touring.
I’ve bought Armada Declivity skis not long ago, but I’m still missing bindings and boots.
How should I go about buying those? First boots, then bindings? Or do I buy bindings and then search for the appropriate boots?
As for compatibility between skis and bindings, is there anything in particular I should be paying attention to?
I’m a beginner when it comes to ski touring, so I’m first looking to buy equipment that will actually allow me to ski, so I can test it out on non-exposed terrain. I’ll buy the safety equipment once I get serious about it.
>>931407
I don't know anything about alpine touring stuff but when I was buying my backcountry XC skis, everyone said to pick the boots that fit my feet and the bindings that fit the boots.
>>931407
what about beacon/shovel/probe? airbag pack?
do you know how to use that rescue gear?
more importantly, do your friends know how to use that rescue gear?

>>932025
no, not yet. I’ll attend a seminar and buy the equipment soon after.
I just wanna try the skis on a small hill behind my house first where i definitely won’t find myself buried under tons of snow.
What do you guys think of this site? Seems legit but I don't know if I'd trust my credit card.
http://tirami.co/
>>931364
>but I don't know if I'd trust my credit card.
kek, I bought a parachute material hammock with attatched mosquito netting from some unknown outdoor clearance site a couple years back and my credit card company canceled my cards and sent me new ones within a couple of days after that. The hammock still came in and I had no issues after that but apparently my credit card company didn't like me shopping there.
>>931364
> .co
The company I work for get attacked by some social engineering bullshit a while back the fake email where .co instead of .com
But I don't know the site they might be legit
>>931634
Same goes with a few other shady Chinese sites I've bought from. The way it typically works is that the company is legit and will sell you stuff, but you'll start getting phone calls about how your card has been compromised and you need to do something about it. The calls themselves are phishing scams of course. I just ignore it and my goods arrive some time later.
Hey sc/out/ I need your take in some issue since there's some knowledgeable metallurgy fags here. What do you guys think of M390 steel for a less than 4" fixed blade for general purpose? I'm talking about pic related, thanks.
>>931268
For EDC type tasks m390 is my all around favorite blade steel
But it also depends who heat treats it etc
Take a look at the Bradford guardian 3 and 4
3 is great for EDC. And the owner is a nice guy
Sadly I rarely carry mine because of the type of work I do
>>931272
Yeah, the heat treatment is crucial but the only thing I know about that is that they treat it to 61rc. Bradford have sweet knives but the shipment to europistan is a pain in the ass due to import tax and other border shit. Funny thing because our borders are pretty much inexistent when it comes to filthy migrants.
m390 is an excellent steel type.
You'll be making an awesome choice OP
go ahead and pull the trigger on it.
What type of bird is this?
kingfisher ;-;
>>931175
Why sad?
OP download the app in pic related. You can identify birds on the go

Waterproofing general.
Any recommendations for making my softshell repell water better? Not looking for a rain jacket, it isn't raining and it doesn't rain here in Colorado. I'm just tired of getting wet while snowshoeing.
>>931133
Nikwax. Their tekwash and then dwr treatment works pretty well on any synthetic fabric... And even cotton(though it's nowhere near as good as a polyester softshell that's been treated.)
>>931294
Is there anything else out there worth looking into?
Melt plastic grocery bags onto the leaky parts
Just chilly enough for toe socks here in NY. Hello /out/!
>>930879
what? the only time my feet feels cold is when i have a fever.
i can walk on cold stone with bare feet and don't feel any discomfort.
>>930883
One of the lucky few I guess. I don't think I could walk around barefoot on anything cold
>>930883
That being said, what do you think of the socks?
How do I travel forever? 26 year old with a master in economics and ~155k euros in stocks but some could be sold. I get ~440 euros a month from dividends.
How do I travel forever? My current plan is to refit a van and drive around but then I need more income.
>>930872
Tell me how you made 155k and I'll tell you how to live out of a van
>>930872
If you can't travel with 500€ a month you are doing something wrong.
>>930882
>If you can't travel in europe for 16 euros a day you're doing something wrong
Okay grandpa
