Anyone in the Boston area?

I'm moving to Boston in April (from the Caribbean) and I want to get into hunting and camping.

I've gotten a nonresidential fishing permit the few times I came up there, but can a foreigner get a firearm/hunting permit. Even for bow hunting?

And how do I go about finding hunting/outdoor buddies?

Pic kinda related.

You definitely won't be getting a fire arms permit, period.

You'd have to take a hunting class in order to get a hunting permit for bow season, which is in November? But the chances of someone who's not only not a citizen but also not a permanent resident of Massachusetts are probably slim to none

That depends on what you're doing outside and what exactly "extreme weather" is supposed to be. An answer to your question is useless without more information:
The most essential outfit for extreme weather is one that protects you from that extreme weather without hindering your planned activities too much.

You want us to tell you what the best gear for every conceivable situation at the same time is, without spending too much money, while having high quality.
And then you're gonna use it for a casual hike in the woods once a year in winter and otherwise wear it in the city when you go commuting and grocery shopping.

Protip: that doesn't exist and you're not gonna need it.

So really, get:

A glass-lined, vacuum insulated carafe. Brand name is Diamond from Japan. Vintage I think. I use it to keep stuff hot or cold. Boiling food/coffee/tea will be 160F after about 24 hours. Which is perfect for my needs. I carry a bottle brush to clean it.
>>
>>937520
Do you think these new stainless steel/plastic/silicone vacuum flasks have the same quality? I mean glass lined is great but thats old timey. Living in a big city and being a student is to me a bit like surviving in the woods. Nobody gives a duck about you and you have to be prepared for anything. And not having to buy pizza slices or bagels would be my way of surviving

What test-weight ratio do you use with your braided line?
>>
>>937463
Whatever is appropriate for the fishing I'm doing. What are you trying to go after?
>>
>>937463
I have 20lb braid spooled up on a spinning reel on a telescoping rod that I use as a general "do it all" travel solution for freshwater fishing. I've caught largemouth and smallmouth bass, rainbow trout, channel and blue catfish, bluegill, and even a freshwater drum using that setup. Biggest fish I caught on it was a ~10lb catfish I think.

I use Texas rigged soft plastics and fish in heavy vegetation for bass a lot and the 20lb braid really shines there; I can really manhandle 2-4 lb bass and just winch them out of the weeds.

I am planning a trip for a group of 6 to spend 2 nights in Yosemite in June to do some light hiking and see the sights. I don't want to do any proper camping because the trip is part of a bigger trip for a wedding and I don't want to get bogged down with gear etc. I am having difficulty finding affordable accommodations this late in the game. I was wondering if any one had any useful suggestions. Perhaps some hidden gems? My options appear to be either booked already or super expensive. Ideally, I would like to keep it around $50-$60 per person per night. But I am open to other suggestions as well.

What can you tell me about Mt. Whitney?

I’m from the Alps and plan to climb some mountains in the USA.. It’d be my first visit there (in late summer or autumn), so nothing too technical for a start.

Mt. Whitney caught my eye, since it’s the highest in contiguous USA, but then I read this:

>Permits are required year round, and to prevent overuse a limited number of permits are issued by the Forest Service between May 1 and November 1.[29] The Forest Service holds an annual lottery for hiking and backpacking permits on the Mount Whitney Trail. Applications are accepted from February 1 through March 15. Any permits left over after the lottery is completed typically go on sale April 1.[30]

What are the chances a foreigner could obtain a permit?
A permit implies that many people desire to climb it, and since the permits are in high demand, it sounds logical to deny foreigners first (?)

It looks like no permit is needed for a winter ascend.

Are there rangers who check who has a permit in the summer season?
>>
>>937080
It's just a walk up. Higher elevation can mess with some people. Drink a lot of water.
>>
>>937080
are you going to hike the trail, or go up one of it's technical routes?

quota period permits are a simple lottery- throw your name in the hat for a date, hope you get picked, residency doesn't enter into it. permits are still required in winter, but are nonquotad. yes, there are rangers who check them peak season.

if you go to whitney in the late spring, summer, or early fall there will always be other people around. it's easily accessible, has the draw of being the highest, and, iirc, every day 100 day permits and 50 overnight permits are allotted.

I'm hiking with my sister in the pyrenees this summer and I'm still in need of a tent. Since I'm on a tight budget and do want to make everything as light as possible, do you have any tips on gear and specifics?
We are both not that big (1,75 cm), so a regular 2 p tent should be fine, unless we find a very light 3p tent.

I was aiming for this tent in 15 D Nylon/silicone:

It's a chinese imitation of the MSR Hubba Hubba 2 tent. Is it total crap?

I'm checking massdrop for a new klymit matress (Klymit insulated static v lite is looking pretty good for around 70 euros).

I still need to find a proper backpack, clothes and sleeping bag.
I've lots of good things about quilts, but since I'm not experienced with them I'd like to get your opinion. Do have a sleeping bag under 100 dollars/euros with a comfort T of around 10 degrees C you recommend?
What size backpack should I look at? I was thinking 50L, 55 L max?
any other budget tips?

Anyone else with Raynaud's? It makes cold weather brutal. Even mild temperatures like 45-50F on a cloudy day can cause it for me, or carrying a milk jug to the grocery store checkout.

I am constantly wearing gloves and wiggling my fingers. This is keeping me from doing anything longer than a day-trip most of the year.

Does anyone else with this get to enjoy the outdoors in the winter?

Pic related; not my hand.
