question to the bushcraft bros.

should I bring a 1" hex cold chisel or a 1" mason chisel with me to baton wood?

I'm thinking that I wouldn't have to put my knife through unnecessary stress if were to use something that was similar to a splitting maul. It seems small enough to fit in my pack and weighs a little over 1 pound.

have any of you guys tried this before? these chisels cost about 3 dollars. pic is a mason chisel.

these are cold chisels.

bushcraft yeah?
>>
Bit heavy if you're a gram weenie but yeah that shit'll make short work any thick, heavy, cleanly sawed stumps and logs you find out there and need to split into wedges.
>>

why would anyone baton with a $50-$200 knife then?

What's some essential reading on survival, bushcrafting, and other shit for going innawoods? Stuff with physical copies would be ideal since I might not always have electricity or an internet connection. Been looking around online trying to research this, but besides medical references nobody can seem to really agree on what's best.

At the risk of sounding like an utter fool I have to ask, what do you make when you are bushcrafting? Like, what would you need to make that you didn't bring? Are you just carving or something? Just curious, thanks.

Not trying to be a shill, just wondering what people actually "craft"

Only thing I've ever "crafted" innawoods was a shelter with a trench fire.

Same, it's just that I see people mentioning bushcrafting all the time and I'm like "are yor making like bows and arrows or fishing rods or something?"

You fair value for what you pay for. it's cheaper than most branded gear that is above crappy highstreet grade in the UK ( crap like Regatta and Gelert)

This is an AlpKit 650ml Ti mug, it's nice but it's flimsier than an 10 year old condom. All I've ever used it for is boiling up shellfish, making coffee and heating up boil in the bag food and the bottom has warmed to the point it make it sit flat you have to push it in, and then it will pop back out with a fucking almighty PING! at the slightest touch.

I called in the the showroom a couple of years back and checked the returns/reject bin (well worth doing if you're UK based and are passing close to Nottingham) I scored a Ti nonstick frying pan for a fiver and a buddy picked up a set of carbon fibre walking pole at the same time (8 quid each) that had locked up and weren't adjustable- he was able to fix 'em and has been using them fine since. Another buddy bought one of the super thick dozer sleep mats, it's too heavy to carry on a hike really but he's used it for literally months of car camping where he's rolled the seats down and laid it flat out, he swears by it now.

My house mate has the same mug, I was impressed by it, especially after I saw the price. But not enough to replace my trangia mini. I am eyeing up their wool base layers right now.

>amsteel soft shackles
>shank of 1.8mm dyneema
>toothbrush+paste+bandana
>chopsticks
>compass (really its in my pocket)
>firesteel
>another lighter
>9hr candle
>rite in rain pad and pencil
>mylar blanket

In Thoreau's writing about his ascent of Mt. Ktaadn, he mentions that for a good amount of the trip they poled upstream in a batteaux, which I guess is something like this.

Why would anyone do that? Would it not be a ridiculous amount of work to ascend in this fashion?

Am I missing something here?

>>956909
Today it would be a ridiculous amount of work. In mid-19th century Maine, however, it would have been the best way to get a group of people and supplies to the base of the mountain. Gear and supplies then were MUCH heavier then and humping all that shit to the base through deer trails and bushwacking would have been a major asspain.

In 1846, most of Maine was untouched wilderness. There were few roads or man-made trails. The whole reason HDT had a transcendentalist freak out on the mountain was because he'd literally never been anywhere that didn't have something man made on it. Batteauxs and canoes were the best way to move around.
>>
>>956952
Would it not be easier to pull some kind of craft upstream than to pole your way up though?

Genuine question, I have zero experience with this kind of thing.

I would like to get a boot knife for camping/hiking. I like the idea of them, and was thinking of getting one with maybe a half serrated side?

Any recommendations? Bonus if it can be used as a neck knife. Does not have to be very big,

Is it okay to use a ridingmower as a form of transport around the homestead/farm? Instead of a golfcart or ATV.

What should you look for in a ridingmower if you intend to use it as transportation?

There are generally three ratings for those, from lightest weight / lowest power on up;

Riding mowers > Lawn tractors > Garden tractors

Something like this is a riding mower;
