We are planning a road trip from seattle to washington DC, we have about 20 days, any suggestions on what to see/do and what to bring and how much money will i need for food we will be camping most of the time
Bumping this thread, it seems like a cool trip
I would recommend bringing plenty of music, it's gonna be a long ride
a) when?
b) round trip, or one way?
c) buy an "america the beautiful" pass
>>985917
I drove from DC to Seattle in 3 days

That's called a tarp
Thought we could get a thread going for anons living off-grid (or aiming to).
Please, be as vague or as specific as you want (but be sure to provide enough detail for us to track you down and push your shit in).
To get things started:
>What are the most important considerations when buying property? Did you have to plan around work, family, etc?
>How's your climate? How far to the nearest town? Major highway? City?
>What do you drive? What kinds of supplies do you get from the land, and what do you have to go to town for?
>How do you handle plumbing, heat, and electric?
>Any upgrades planned?
>Worst thing/best thing about where you live?
>Hell, just post anything
For sc/out/s who want to live off-grid but don't (everyone else):
>What's holding you back?
One more thing:
>Tell us about your goats, cats, chickens, doggos, and assorted beasts
I'm planning on going off-grid in WI.
>what's holding you back?
Money, not having a trapping license yet, still honing my skills, and potentially bringing a qt with me.
Money and having some sort of school nearby for my future kids. Setting up in Northern Ontario can be tricky.
Hey /out/ haven't really ever been around this board much but was wondering if any of you have photos or tips for living off the land in the forest going to be going out on my own for an undetermined time, anything helps thanks a lot.

Info on my area: In Canada so plenty of tree's and coverage from weather and lots of resources to build shelter with, low rate of predators but any form of shelter built above ground would be most appreciated as it seems like a cool idea although don't know how plausible it is as I said pretty new here
Check out primitive technology on YouTube, it's got everything you need to know in order to to barely function in the outdoors

Lurk more
Don't start threads on boards until after you lurk
How do I prevent myself from becoming the most dangerous game?
I've seen plenty of forensic files so I know how this shit goes if I don't have a knife or something out there but that'll do jack shit if I have a bullet in my head.
>>984756
I've grown tired of your mindless shilling.
Stay home if you are afraid.
>>984756
Well, going by your pic, I'd say don't let yourself get talked into playing dynamite bear-polo badminton.
>>984820
This.
Grow some balls, OP.
Thoughts on LED flashlights? I just ordered a chinese knockoff that claims to be "4000 lumens". any one use these /out/?
>>987375
They've become way more advanced in the last 15 years. When they first became a thing, they couldn't match a bigass xenon bulb. But now, me likey.
Lumens are bs in many cases. Lumens in relation to battery life is what you have to look at. Super bright ain't super cool if the batteries only last 15 minutes, except for maybe in tactical applications.
any real good LED is going to run you about $30. I'd recommend the Voltec flashlights.
>>987422
Not voltec, they're kind of shitty but make good construction lighting
NEBO. Nebo's are the shit. They've got really cool engineering aspects that make them super useful. I've loved mine.
What do /out/ists think of knee high moccasins for hiking/backpacking?
I've never seen an Indian with a rolled ankle. You should give it a shot.
>>987217
Eh, I have had the same thought but never acted on it.
What do you usually wear? Stiff boots with ankle support are very different from a thin layer of soft leather.
Would a 3 blade brushcutter do the job against a vine patch like in the pic?
Or will it just tangle and screw up the trimmer?
What about a hedge trimmer?
>>987023
I don't see why it wouldn't work. Maybe the saw blade looking ones would work better?
>>987023
really depends on the vines and your machine. I'd personally just cut that back with a hand hook (it's an asian thing, kinda like a scythe)and some thick gloves. I'd make short work of your pic.
Why does the hedge need to come down? Tasty looking raspberries in there anon
www.gearstopshop.com is having one of those FREE + Shipping sales.
I don't work for them, I just want to help fellow sc/out/s get some gear.
>pic related my cart
do you have to sign up for something? i can't find it.
>>986871
just search the keyword "offer"
This shop is like the worst I have seen in a while.
I'm looking to hike to Havasupai Falls in AZ.
People say you even need a permit / reservation for a day hike. The tribe's official site states that too.
Are they really that serious? Are you going to get kicked out if you show up with no reservation. Or you might just have to pay a higher entrance fee?
>paying $50 to see a waterfall
>posting a false color image
>starting this stupid thread
I hope you die in a flash flood
>>986818
you need a reservation, unless you somehow get lucky and the day you show up there isn't anyone there. a TON of people go there OP and it gets busier every year.
>>986818
>Are they really that serious?
Yes. I live in AZ and the Havasupai don't have a lot of casinos so this is a big source of income for them. They'll tell you to fuck right off.
I always run to the help of my grandma, up in Marie Pigg in the north of Sweden first floor always snows in in the winter. I shover her out and she makes me a good dinner :D, then i ask about grandpa and she goes silent.
Worst winter i have ever experienced was 5 meters of snow (20 feet of snow) then the cold set in, -50C.
Just this summer they found several german wwii and soviet wwii skeletons in the mountains.
Its not like its as cold as in siberia in north sweden its just the damn hurricane force winds blowing all the time in the winter.
Even in the summer many tourists die of exposure or getting frozen into waterfalls or trying to wade over -2C creeks. They go in, loose control of the body due to frezing limbs and then drown.
I am kind of believing in the midst of winter when it blows at its most and is as cold as it gets, only swedes can even survive outside. Cooling effect is like -100C to -150C and you cannot even stand because of the force of the wind. Still over the centuries people adapted and learned to live up here in frozen over hell :D.
>>986300
>only swedes can even survive
lol
rofl
rip swedes tho srsly
>>986300
A pic from last summer. The hat of the lost one. This all that is left of a woman heading into the mountains in the midst of a hurricane wind.
Nothing was ever found of her but the snowcap she wore when she went out.
The force of the winds up here makes it very probable she blew over to Norway or even into the north atlantic.
Still we always kneel down at her hat and pay her all the respects (and a tear). Sooner or later though her hat will be lost so we have started to think about rising a stone monument to remember her by, Hjordis was lost, Hjordis will be remembered always.
The frozen lake, this pic is from the 25 july last year and this is the frozen lake or as it is called in the local tongue "the lake of throlls".
We believe when this lake thaws its the end of the world as we know it, all north will go on a killing spree in pure madness and grief killing everything until all is dead inkluding themselves.
Then life starts allover again ...
Best locales? I'll start.
>ive lived homeless in woods of seattle wa, Alberta, parts of ontario, ect. By choice obviously
>best homeless living stories?
>pic unrelated.
the old one still has 150 posts until its bump limit, retard >>977843
But this is for homelessness only
>>986107
don't make more threads you hipster wannabe hobo. nobody need 3 these turds circling the drain.
>Hey /out/,
As relentlessly proven in the past, the novel Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer has proven repeatedly to encourage the mind of young adults to venture out recklessly into their own forms of wilderness and I must do the same!
I plan to make the excursion to Alaska as well and plan on taking the bare essentials as well. I come to you to ask for opinions/advice as to what I should do differently.
I plan to make the trek by off-road vehicle and subsequently live out of it as well. I will be equipped with provisions for at least a month while hunting, gas and a bit of firewood to get started.
A weeks worth of clothing, two sets of hiking boots, two sleeping bags, [maybe a mattress] and a .22 rifle with 1200 rounds.
What else should I add to this list?
And if you see another "Tragedy In Alaska" news article in the next couple years, think of me!
>>985166
>1200 rounds
what the fuck do you need that many rounds for nigga
>>985167
I plan on staying for a while my guy
>>985166
I never usually converse with retards but here goes nothing... Why bother "surviving" in the woods if you've already got the necessary supplies to survive?
It's as much use as shipping out your whole house and dumping it in the woods, or even bringing your whole town with you. You're not a man, you're a weakling. Any idiot can survive if they fill their bags with food and other goodies.
You wouldn't try to survive on minecraft creative mode, so why "try" to survive in the woods with all the supplies you need?

Lots of questions about outdoor wear, no-one has mentioned ECWCS, which covers all questions so here it is.
ECWCS = layering system of clothes covering all weather climates that are all packable into your outdoor gear setup which is utilitarian to any array of outdoor activities from combat to hunting and hiking.
Baselayer = Moisture-wick, form-fitted, shirt, socks, underwear, neck gaiters, balaclava, gloveliners that dry easily and fit next to skin.
Midlayer = Fleece or softshell insulated layers for long-johns that are packable and somewhat form-fitting to allow for more layers.
Outerlayer = Water repellant material, loosely fit, packable and lightweight windproof layers such as gore-tex jackets and trousers that are non-insulated.
Subzero layers = You live in a nuclear winter, therefore the forementioned three are not enough and you require an outer-layer that has said properties but is also insulated and worn in conjunction with base and midlayers.
I cannot really say what brands outside of the standard USGI shit and foreign milsurp shit that works, because I am typically a cheap son of a bitch that survives off basically shit-all so here is what sites I browse for ECWCS related shit and also outdoor gear for fellow cheap-asses.
http://www.midwayusa.com/
http://www.keepshooting.com/
https://www.varusteleka.com/en
https://grey-shop.ru/
>>984773
Except for that weird over armor parka thing everything else is just standard hiking gear. You can probably find it all cheaper from normal outdoor sites unless you need to wear camo gear for some weird reason.
>>984998
milsurp shit while sometimes uncomfortable is more durable for the pricepoint than bargain civilian market stuff in the US more often than not imo
the only real cost is your sense of pride in wearing something ugly like flecktarn if you're fashion conscience i guess, personally for me olive drab is the only way to go because olive drab is the best color ever invented and no other color patterns will ever be as great as olive drab
ITT posers
Theres really no way around this
Show me your best dress /out/
>>984139
scandanavian navy jacket
i've laid in -20 weather for 3+ hours target shooting in this before. really comfy and has like 2 removable layers. Also a great overcoat for formal wear as well.
cost $80 on ebay.
