Talk about fishin

Champagne corks are very good for drying flies; better than other corks because they have a built-in tie on point for lanyards.
>>1090779
Yeah that's kind of the point, I WANT them to murder the shit out of each other. I want to have a miniature riverbed in my living room, bloodthirsty food chain and all. Minimal assistance on my end keeping them alive.
>>1090788
You won't be able to have a self sustaining system in your house mang. You'd still have to feed them and replace the ones that get eaten.
Anyone know why Dave Canterbury took down the Mountain Man Style Breakfast vid from his channel? It was one of the comfiest vids on there.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jz6NZPk-4jE
>>1090488
send him a pm
>>1090488
amazing, i was just looking for this video myself and couldnt find it
im positive it was because it was a really poor show of cooking. eggs do this thing that defies logic where if you scramble them into a dish, they never cook throughly, and turn the dish into a sloppy egg mess. thats fine for congee or etc but not things like fried rice or "mountain man"-1 pot meals
he knew he fucked up when he looked at it, and tried giving it to the dog, who also didnt want it. its fine, everyone fucks up eggs
>>1090488
Dave cant help but lie to his viewers, Idk why anyone gives him support unless they enjoy stolen valor, bad ideas, animal cruelty, and manlets.
Hey /Out/, Im looking for a Handheld GPS for hunting hiking etc. I know next to nothing about them, my requirements are that it should be topographical, accurate, reliable and for under 500 CAD. Any pointers, reccomendations etc are welcome.
Use google maps on your cellphone. They have an offline option.
>>1090486
Accurate/reliable covers pretty much everything. Give the antenna clear view of the sky, anything manufactured in the last decade will be fine.
Garmin's pretty much "the standard" others are compared to. Also the most community-supported when it comes to maps and databases.
Most modern receivers can take mapsets.
Make sure you get a receiver with a µSD card slot - internal memory is usually quite limited.
I also suggest a color display - when you add maps and the data that comes with them, grayscale gets real hard to read.
There's sites with free maps - gpsfiledepot.com comes to mind. Check that out, if they have coverage of the areas you're interested in then give those maps a shot. Otherwise, the Garmin topo maps are pretty good. Some areas are hit-or-miss for coverage and quality.
I run the Garmin maps on my GPS - CityNav covers US/CA/MX, and Topo I have split into a couple different regions. With as much and as often as I travel, I like having a consistent quality map on the GPS.
Don't need the top-of-the-line GPS to get the basic features you're interested in. My old 76Cx does exactly what you're looking for.
eTrex is solid, capable, and affordable.
Oregon and Montana are on the higher-end, they're good.
Some smartphone apps aim to replace a GPS receiver, but of all the ones I've tried, I keep falling back on my 76Cx because of its form factor, durability, and mounting options.

I work in the woods (USFW ecologist) and I use a Garmin GPSmap 64st.
The "st" just means that it comes pre-loaded with topo. I wouldn't have gotten the topo if my work didn't pay for it because you can download it for free.
Its useful for marking waypoints and the "birds eye" is great. As accurate as I need it too.
I would stay away from touch screens. Seems great until you have to use gloves or slightly wet hands.
How often do you have problems with thieves? Or do you camp too far away for it to be an issue?
Some complete faggot went in my tent today and stole my headlamp, which I loved autistically and my fucking wet wipes.
Thus far, I always felt there was an 'outdoorsmenship' spirit that prevented this. Don't know if it's the tourists this time a year or what but I'm blind with rage. I fucking forget one time to backpack it and gone.
What kind of life would you have had to feel comfortable opening someones tent? I'm fucking homeless technically, living out of my car, and I dont pull this shit.
>>1090352
Where was your tent?
>>1090354
Campsite. Went for a dayhike.
Again, I shouldnt have left it, but fuck.
Not a trailer park campground. No water, no electric. Didnt expect this degenerate behavior.
>>1090359
It's usually other homeless in the area.
fire reflectors, what are the thoughts on this?
>>1090023
they don't reflect fire for sure
never made one but from what i hear, they're effective for trapping heat for your campsite.
They work, but are unnecessary assuming you've got appropriate clothing and sleeping gear. By all means have fun with it though.
I remember seeing in, at least the last year, the "official" /k/ & /out/ hybrid emblem. Who has it: I want me some s/kout/ patches for my gear.
In exchange I present this beautiful pic of a campsite at the grand canyon

Go elsewhere, multicultural joo faggot.
>>1090091
Well that's just not very neighborly of you, friend
>>1090008
If i was campin near ya id wait till the sun was a settin and push you off the cliff whilst u was sittin in that chair of urs
Seriously, if you live in the US, Canada or Russia, why aren't you living in a small cabin somewhere in the nature with your wife and raising your kids like a proper family?
When you grow up you'll realize it's not that simple.
>>1089779
It literally is.
>Wageslave for a few years
>Meet like-minded gal

>>1089775
Y have a wife and kids, tho? I'd rather have a pet burr named Pretzel.
So i'm super interested in freight hopping. I'm young, and trying to create a memory and a journey that will stick with me for a life time. It's always been a dream of mine to do this. I'm also trying to see some really beautiful views.I live in Ontario and I know some trains have to run through some really awesome spots.I also really want to document the journey and make a cool short film or something.
To anyone with experience in freight hopping, what are some essentials to bring and good tips and tricks for a first timer.
Also, feel free to share any stories related to freight hopping.
>>1089498
>trying to create a memory and a journey that will stick with me for a life time
Getting raped by hobos is gonna do that, yes.
>>1089506
I go walk down by the freights all the fucking time and rarely see hobos, and if I do they're drunk off their ass or sleeping. You're fucking retarded.
Here's the memory I created when my asshole dad made me mad and I got back at him by trainhopping
Thoughts on the best all-around ABC watches at reasonable prices?
>>1089310
Dont know about ABC watches but I did buy ths twin sensor Casio some two years ago. Has a compass and a thermometer, mineral glass, 200m WR. pretty solid for $50.
I wouldnt consider getting a watch with a barometer/altimeter because the sensor can be sensitive to dust and water, plus the max WR on most ABC casios is 100m and I go diving often
>>1089310
Don't be cheap. Get a Protrek. It will save your life. Pic is not so expensive with triple sensor.
Protrek without solar charge costs around only $60 with full triple sensor.
I leave a trace.
>>1088934
archeology would be really boring if most people didn't.
>>1088944
Finally someone who understands.
>>1088962
No one wants to dig up modern shit.
Anyone have any favorite novels with backpacking or other outdoor themes? I recently read The Distance From Me to You....a little sappy, but good.
Looking for some other books to capture the outdoor frame of mind when stuck innatown. inb4 A Walk in the Woods and Into the Wild, already read those...
Novels preferred, but non-fiction is okay too.
>>1088894
Forgot to say, good travel/vagabond fiction would also be welcome. Books like The Beach, The Drifters, etc.
And please don't suggest I ask on /lit/, because they'll just call me a "pleb" and start moaning about "genre fiction".
>>1088894
Hatchet...if you don't mind kids books...also My Side of the Mountain
Jon krakauer's books are really good. Not fiction but written like novels.
Was any of you guys ever chased by dogs while /out/?
I had my first experience this week
>go on 20km day hike
>see herd of goats
>assume there's a shepherd and a dog around
>see dog a couple dozen meters away
>stop to eat, they may leave in the meanwhile
>leave trail and trek my way back to it like 50m ahead
>dog notices me
>starts chasing me
>there's two more dogs
>I'm not waiting so I ran as fast as I could for like 30 meters
>they stop
>I climb a boulder to rest and to be sure they're not after me anymore
All in all it was kinda funny, also I'm not sure they were going to really attack me but due to their size I decided to not risk it.
Pic related, 3 of these massive beauties.
You shouldn't run away, you can't outrun them anyway and may trigger their hunting instincts.
But the chance that those would have actually harmed you was very low.

What would you do
>>1088550
If it's a shepard, then it's probably just trying to scare you back to the rest of the herd.
Recommendations for a cheap, quality, backpacking tent? Going on a backpacking trip and the prices of tents from REI is absurd. But I understand the quality and stow ability is key.

milsurp, your only chance.
forget about weight or storage ability.
Also, you are fucking retard, without telling where you go and what you plan doing there is no way to recommend you a certain type of tent or alternative solutions.

go to sierratradingpost.com, find one that's

Recently started a job in an knife store in Uppsala, Sweden. I have been instructed to focus on pushing Mora products. 32 years old, so I don't have a lot of experience in this field. Do you guys have anything to help me survive the sales life? I get points towards bonuses for every knife I move...
Also, if you have any fun/exciting/stupid stories from camping trips, all stories are welcome.

What scents, perfumes or oils remind you of great trips, nostalgia, or capture a certain moment? I like Dsquared Rocky Mountain Road, reminds me of the scent after forest fire season in Portuguese mountains.
Not 100% out but humour me, I've just read The Perfume (would recommend, autist hikes through France and lives in a cave).
>>1087711
I know it's a meme scent that's bad for my health, but cedar carries a lot of /out/ nostalgia for me.
Still, I wish I could buy north Cascades wildflowers/trees in a bottle. I don't know of anyone that mass produces a wild range of outdoorsy scents.
>>1088721
I got bored and tried making pine tar but didn't know that I needed dry fatwood and instead just used green pine branches.
Turned out to make a wonderful smelling super thin liquid that was kinda like smokey pine. I still make some on occasion because it smells fucking amazing and keeps the bugs off.
Love this stuff.
