I would never pick one over a G-Class or a Volvo C303, but still... this kinda hurts

Pieces of shit. Once went on a trip that had 3 land rovers and all of them had a door fall off during it.

The end of an era

Land Rover now officially makes no good cars, and the new defender will be a POS plastic shitbox designed to meet Euro NCAP 5 star ratings

So how can Merc can get the G-Wagen to pass all the neccessary tests and still look like a brick.
Look at JLRs output and you can tell they just suck.

By making it cost a minimum of £75,000, while a Defender starts(started) at £22,000

Some plastic body parts on new defenders would be a nice change from the usual rusty ones

Hopefully we'll tell the EU to poke it and we can make them again

Still, everyones bawwwing over it but Toyota does not seem to have any problems still making tough as nuts Land cruisers....hopefully they'll bring the 70 series to Europe to replace the hole left by land rover
>>
>>14339914
Nah

The Geländewagen made the transition into a mallcrawler flawlessly and still sells really well, although perhaps a tad watered down (not looking at the "proper" 4x4/4x4*2 and 6x6). The normal version is just a box filled with tech that have absolutely no use for 99% of the current customer base and will never see any tougher terrain than a tall curb.

The Land Rover stayed relatively true to its origins and design of being a very capable car that most people should be able to afford, which is also a large part of why sales declined so much as nobody really had a use for the type of car anymore, nor was it seen as appealing to most people. The Geländewagen "sold out" and saved its own skin. It was never a particularly cheap car, but it was a relatively simple and rugged SUV mostly equipped with only the bare minimums you'd expect to find in a civilian vehicle.

Note how it's sagging in the middle, that's down to frame rot. It killed my dad's series 2A, it killed my defender, and it's slowly killing my current disco
>>

Footwell is steel
The window frames are steel

The body panels and some of the floors are the only parts that's aluminium on them
>>

>Some plastic body parts on new defenders would be a nice change from the usual rusty ones
the only steel part of the body is the firewall and the window frames (LR doesnt understand how corrosion works)

Thats what killed a lot of the few 109's our military bought in the short space of time between the retirement of the Volvo L3314N and the shift into the Geländgewagen

Still, its one of the few Land Rovers I'd ever want to own
>>
>>14340014

Nothing a Galvanised chassis from Paddock Spares or Rimmer Bros (if they still sell 'em) can't fix. Electrolytic corrosion from the dissimilar metals will always be a tricky point though.

That was always the point of a Land Rover though. Basic, rugged, reliable, go-anywhere. Take it off road, take it to market, take it up a mountain in Peru if you like. Chassis rusted? Buy a new one. Dented panels? Who cares. Rolled it? Buy a new roof. Need a pickup? Get a different body.

Modern LRs now are all too expensive, too complicated and too fragile for the kind of off-roading the Defender and Series before it were designed to do.

I mourn the Defenders loss, but I mourn even more that Land Rover have strayed so far from what the Wilks brothers set out to do in 1947.

I may now go and get drunk and buy a Series III 109 pickup.
>>
>>14340055
Wolfs are awesome, I'm toying with the idea of going to my local army surplus yard (literally 2 miles down the road) and buying the one with the most bullet holes.

>24v for more lights
>hardened doors for bullet protection
>mechanical injection diesel for max reliability

Biggest issue is that they're like 4 grand, defenders of all kind hold their value insanely well

>>14340059
My dad used to have a Defender 90 wagon that was galvanized and undersealed. Still rusted out because LR put so many moisture traps in the early ones
>>
>>14340079
Even more expensive here, but such is life in the Socialist Peoples Republic of Norway

I tend to have raging hard-ons for militart vehicles, and the LR is definetly on that list... shame that there are so many other vehicles that I find even cooler
>>
>>14340123
I would love me a volvo military truck, but they're really rare here.

Also, Wolfs start at 4 grand for a fully decommissioned 12v 110, while a 24v 90 will run you as much as 10 grand, possibly more depending on condition and how much of a jew the seller is.

I had a L3314N for a few months some years back now... great fun, but a tad underpowered. Its a style of vehicle I really love, but if I can't get my hands on a TP21 in the future then I'll first be looking for a Pinzgauer 4x4 or the L3314's more handsome and well-equipped descendant; the Volvo C303
>>
>>14339967
Exactly m8.
They are now considered as just a status definer.
>>
>>14340079
What engine was fitted to the Wolf in Norway?
Don't go for the 90 hp version, it's an absolute turd.
>>
>>14338938
It's been replaced by the Disco 3 and 4 since 2005.
>>
>>14341552
I wouldn't know but I'd assume the same TD300 that we got

It's slow as fuck but will run past the end of time with oil changes and timing adjustments
>>
>>14338863
>This is the Last Land Rover Defender
Until they replace it with a new Land Rover Defender. Just like the Defender replaced the Series 3, and that succeeded the Series 2 before it. Which was also preceded by the Series 1.

>>
>>14340001

There's rust plainly visible in that picture you dirty triple nigger. The cowl is rotted out and the fucking frame has cracked in half.

>>14340014

Fuckin' frame rot. It killed my dad's D21 and one of his F150s, it killed my friend's D21, it was killing my Mighty Max when I sold it.
>>
>>14342698
I want one so bad, but I can't find any nice ones to import.
>>
>>14339471

They can't it's on it's last legs (wheels), it will fall foul of the same safety regulations, JLR just shut down production before that to repurpose the production line to something more profitable.

Find a RAF spec one for light weight all aluminium (including the sub frame) lols. The engines are also totally waterproof so as long as the intake is above the water they will run.
>>
>>14341792
Implying the S1,2,3& defenders are different bar a few cosmetic changes, retard of the year award.
>>
>>14343505
how would plastic body parts stop the frame from rotting?
>>
>>14344521
>Implying the S1,2,3& defenders are different bar a few cosmetic changes
Er, yes. That's exactly what I'm implying.

I'll bet you also think there's only ever been one 911 Porsche that's copped a series of facelifts over the entire life of the model name.
>>14344517
Good old Isuzu motors.
>>
>>14341552
They were, to the best of my knowledge, fitted with the 2.3 petrol engine, which is also part of why it never caught on as the military decided to go with diesel for the future vehicles. The reason for this being the useage of F34 multifuel (mix of diesel and propane, more commonly known as JP8) that basically everything in our military runs on; cars, trucks, helicopters, planes and even the gas burners
