They're literally the best low displacement diesels in the market and are used across many groups like GM, Suzuki, PSA, etc.
They're pretty good engines, just like the multi-airs.

I'd rather prefer to drive an old 190d to any current mjet engine.

I have a 2013 WRX 5 door with 35,000 miles that I bought new. It's a fine car. It drinks LESS than a quart of oil between changes (7,000 miles), which is perfectly normal for a car.

The car is fine and I've driven a friend's Focus ST and there are some things I like about the ST better:
>better shifter
>better interior
>6 speed is nice
>awesome "passing power"

Things that suck about the ST:

>blows the tires off the first 3 gears
>lacking rear hatch room
>interior is small
>back seat is shit

I'm really looking forward to the RS. If I don't ditch my WRX for a real sports car and a small pickup, I will end up with an RS.

I have a VAG group car with electric steering.

The steering box play is much more noticeable as it gets worn.

Other than that, it has 250.000Km and excluding a long list of other unrelated problems, the steering is fine.
