What made the Evolution such a popular car in the mid 00s? Looking at it now, it's just a turbo 4 with AWD that's overpriced and underpowered - the WRX STI is a better car and cheaper, and if you don't care about the AWD you can get way more horses out of a Focus RS or something.
Plus the block is aluminum, so you can't get much out of putting more boost into it...
its being discontinued from lack of sales
>better and cheaper
>blows up bone stock or retuned
>can't go past 300whp without new internals
>2 year old models sell almost as much as new models
>if you don't care about the AWD you can get way more horses out of a Focus RS or something.
since fucking when does a mid 00s focus RS have over 300 horses, or even come close to being as fast around a track as an Evo VIII
>faster around track than an STI
>massive turbo is more fun
>ricaro seats stock because race car bro
>more reliable engine
WRX is a better DD since it's more comfy to drive normally, and also more practical. But Evos are breddy gud too.
Because it let people who can't drive RWD platforms good be fast with lolAWD. That's literally the only reason it's popular. Overpriced as fuck because of that. Also, STI isn't a better car, it's worse.
>the WRX STI is a better car
>you can get way more horses out of a Focus RS or something
First of all, I'm not saying the Evo is objectively better than the STI because they both have their ups and downs. With that being said - are you fucking retarded? You absolutely cannot get more power out of an STI, a Focus RS, "or something." 4B11s and especially 4G63s are fucking MONSTERS when it comes to making horsepower, that's why there's so many 800+ hp Evos. That's literally their biggest selling point is the ridiculous ease of making power out of them.
>see this grill design
I fucking hate modern car design jesus christ
>tfw the only car Mitsubishi bothers advertising is a fucking CUV
They'll probably do something to make it more aggressive REEE FROG looking than a stock Mazda3.
A reminder: It is still the world's most competitive platform in time attack
10 YEARS LATER
It still reigns supreme over GT-R and Porsche platforms. Why is this?
>tfw Porsche and Mitsubishi both have glorious civilian-murdering pedigree
Why is the CT9A the premier platform for trackday weapons, a full decade later? I thought someone would have caught up by now.
No, friend. Even in the Unlimited classes, where the best Porsche, GM LS, Nissan, STI, rotary and Lotus tuners compete. They still cannot hold a candle to the top Lancer Evolution teams.
They have no excuse. They cannot beat a 10 year old car.
ultimate fanboi mode: unlocked
The unlimited class is still separated by drive train in super lap battle and it's subsidiaries.
If you mean hill climbs, then it's obvious awd has an advantage on low grip stage type time attacks
The masses don't care about fun. They sneer at our turbocharged i4, V8 and anything with better performance than a Camry, while drooling over luxury brands and Italian supercars.
"I want to buy a Lambo and take it through the Maccas drive through."
Maybe in Straya, but it hasn't gotten to your levels in the states yet, sure people admire Italians but the Pony cars did come back due to demand, Mitsubishi is just suffering from horrible management currently
It's not just Mitsubishi over here, sadly. We're losing the V8 Commodore and inline 6 Falcon. Anything even remotely fun warrants normies bellowing about overcompensating and dangerous hoon vehicles.
That's always been true, so by your logic no one would ever make a sports car. That has nothing to do with Shitsubishi discontinuing it.
It's because they were getting REKT by Subaru and the other cheap hothatches like the Speed3 and Focus ST/RS. No one is going to spend 40 grand on a riced out Lancer when they can spend 28 grand on a Riced out Ford or Mazda and get very similar performance.
inb4 explosive butthurt diarrhea from fanbois
The interior is absolute shit. For a car of that price and supposed calibre, leaving such a big loose end is inexcusable.
inb4 that's not why you buy an Evo etc. I don't give a fuck, put a decent interior in it, not some cheesey Fisher Price plastic tonka dogshit dash
Just look at this fucking garbage.
>tfw your car culture is slowly being murdered by crippling government regulations and The Eternal Jew
Holy fuck. Canadian here, I'm glad we're still so close to the bosom of America that we get all the awesomeness they do. Saw some guy driving a Boss302 in a blizzard last night, and at least half a dozen Camaros with snowtires parked at the mall.
Feels good man.
yeah but stupid fucking ricers and stance fags are ruining it for everyone.
car crushing didnt exist before ricers started killing themselves street racing. "loud exhaust" citations didn't exist before ricers. checks for engine swaps and cats never existed before ricers. i bet there will be some regulation about wheel and tire fitment that will fuck with people actually interested in performance not just stancefag shit.
In 30 years the only thing you'll see is Lancers with aftermarket EVO kits and 4g63 swap they took out if an old junkyard naturally aspirated Eclipse that they turbocharged themselves.
The level of (over)regulation in Australia is astounding. First they took your guns, now they're taking your cars.
Nannystate when? You guys are gonna be UK 2.0, I hope you know that.
Hope you've got a licence for that butter knife, m8.
don't make me start linking you literally dozens of forum posts every week of people blowing up brand new WRX STis after 3-4 months
these cars blow up so often i have no clue how they have the reputation for reliability they have, ffs i know 2 people who have had broken ringlands on fairly new cars. never beat the shit out of them either
they make turbo rotaries look reliable.
the interior of the subarus arent much better ffs they're both still $16-19k imprezas and lancers they both feel like plastic dogshit they have very little sound deadening and they both rattle and squeak hard
golf R is decent though
>the WRX STI is a better car
Not only is that not true the STI is also worse for the intended application which is ricing your shit to 600hp or more
Also subarus have piss poor styling, EVOs are semi attractive on the other hand
My mitsubishi dealership still has 30 2015 models for sale. They have 6 Final editions and they want $48K for them each. I think mitsubishi way overestimated how valuable these cars are, especially the rise in American Muscle. Tuner cars were cool in the early 2000's but the v8 made a comeback and Mitsubishi didn't adapt.
I know it makes me sad too. I get off work and go there just to look at them.
They thought they could get away with charging the same price that the others like Toyota and Nissan did during the 90s, I actually like the MR's interior and really like the car from a design/technology stand point, its a shame its a dead end
They assumed the young guys who bought used Evos when they were 21 would continue buying them into their late 20's/early 30's. They didn't account for changing demographics, and the fact that their Evo also costs nearly 50 grand (instead of 10-15 grand that bought a used one).
I think a lot of people just got sick of them, too. I know I have. Every other car on the road is a fucking Lancer, I'm so goddamn tired of seeing these cars everywhere.
Even if a younger guy could afford to buy/finance one of these, the monthly insurance costs would be goddamn retarded too. Oh, and let's not forget what it costs to do a brake job on a fucking Evo.
They've become financially stagnant and visually unappealing. Especially the interiors, they're complete trash.
I feel like these cars are gonna hemorrhage value like crazy, they won't be the collector's item Mitsubishi thinks they are.
How come Subaru dealers can charge thousands over sticker on the WRX and STI and still sell a shit ton of them then?
What makes the WRX/STI so much more appealing to people?
>paying more than MSRP
>even paying MSRP
Fuck that noise. They will sell it to you for MSRP if you push them, you just need to buy near the end of the year when they're desperate to make room for new inventory.
Subaru is much more popular, it's a brand normies recognize. They also have maintained and updated the exterior and interior on a regular basis, mitsubishi was almost untouched since 2008. The 2015 has regular Lancer seats instead of Recaro seats and charging the same as the 2014 which was another pathetic move by mitsubishi.
I love how /o/tist scream lolcantturn.jpg because muscle and pony cars love to break traction at any RPM, but these understeermobiles are lauded after when their factory setup is shit for dirt.
I'll buy a 1g Talon or Laser if I can't find a good priced RWD car, though.
>hurrr durr it's not some geometric 1980's eyesore a-la-MR2 so it's SHEEEEIT
This is literally your mindset, and most people on /o/. The new Mazda3 hatches look really decent, as do the new Focus STs. You're a dildo 2bh m8.
Not to mention they're appealing to the safety-conscious mothers, the ever-jewish carbuyer who wants minimal maintenance and maximum reliability, and the over-cucked 40-something male who is too high in the company to drive a domestic car brand, but too low on the ladder to drive a Lexus or a Porsche.
They have every base covered. Maximum jewry achieved.
Aren't WRX/STIs irrelevant to normies though? They don't want a manual car that gets mediocre fuel economy to haul their wife's kids and dogs around. Seems weird that they can still make them desirable without ever advertising those cars.
Who actually buys Mitsubishi though? Is it just subprime people like the average Kia owner?
Top Gear's tests consistently had the Evo winning out. Same driver in both cars. The Evo is probably the better track car but I prefer the Subaru just because.
That's because Mitsubishi's performance department is small, and they put all their money into making it go fast. The Subaru's interior is crap too. I've been chasing rattles in mine for its entire life.
Guys in their early 30's working a mid-level office job are the primary drivers of WRX/STIs. They have the capital to buy and maintain one, as well as the unquenched thirst to do something fun with their lives. Sadly, they are cucked into an office building 5-7 days of the week, breaking their balls for the Eternal Jew. The only time spent driving their vehicle is to and from the office. Any additional time with the car is spent getting recall/warranty work done, or cleaning it for their next instagram/imgur photo spread.
It's important to note that none of these "men" know how to drive very well, let alone possess the ability to bring an STI to its limits. It's a badge and an image they're trying to cultivate; look guys, I'm semi-successful but I still like to have fun! Oh god someone please notice me my mother keeps asking when I'm going to sell this thing and find a nice girl and have some babies please god I want a minivan so I can settle into middle-class cuckoldry please someone help me...
>Subaru is much more popular, it's a brand normies recognize
This isn't true in europe, in fact its pretty much the other way around unless maybe the weird fucking scandis do shit different
>Who actually buys Mitsubishi though?
Here depending on the model its poorfags, people that genuinely want utility, poorfags that want a ''luxury'' suv but cant afford their highly desired X6, slavs, fucking slavs love mitsubishi, normal people that just want a cheap car and bought the lancer because the styling was neat, and finally richfag cuntboys buying the evos
On the other hand I have genuinely ran into more 458s than base imprezas, and dont think I ever ran into an STI aside from a gc8
In America they play these ads at least 5 times per TV show
Everyone is exposed to their marketing, but they never show a WRX, STI, or BRZ ad on TV. I'm not even sure how they sell them, I just presume when beta husbands take their wives to buy an Outback they plead their case to their wife to let them buy a WRX too or something.
Also fuck their base cars are depressing, I mean I generally prefer the EVOs but like the wrx/sti as well, but those normie tier cars you posted just SCREAM kuckland and alimony, for fucking real
What does every one of those commercials have in common? Some pathetic, shlubbish-looking cuck of a man.
>look at the workhorse, he mows the lawn and buys the RELIABLE, DEPENDABLE crossover for his FAMILY'S sake
>look at fat dog-loving loser, he may suffer from crippling depression but at least he's got a dog and an Impreza! they'll never let him down or tell him he's too fat and ugly!
>the faggot weekend warrior with the unacceptably attractive girlfriend who should be dating an 8/10 not this 3/10 manlet
>now she's picking out his clothes and watching him fail at basic displays of traditional masculinity! cuck him harder! you go girl!
Subaru is the most disgusting brand right now, I swear to fucking god. Their commercials make me physically ill, moreso than recent Ford ads that use the "THIS IS MY FIGHT SONG" shit.
What a horrible time to be alive.
The evo is balls to the wall performance car
It was neutered when it was introduced to the American market for some reason
check records for your local tracks, evos will always be up the top
didn't they pretty much deliver US evo10s with inferior drivetrain quality?
Imho mitsu has never given fuck about that market, which is why so many americans think evos are inferior to stis, while euros like the evos more
commodore still sells assloads pity it is going, falcon meanwhile has been outsold by the c class Benz. The Australian market is so media driven, vw and Mazda are always getting great reviews by Australian media and this has translated into great sales for both, Toyota sells on reputation but I believe that rep is being chipped away by media types who are selling themselves to the highest bidder.
My parents sold their commodore based off the whole media idea that Aus cars are the most expensive to run and are shit quality. The Mazda 3 that replaced it has ended up with higher running cost, fuel cost being almost the same as the commodore, service more expensive and to top it off a tcm dying a few months past warranty. Being in a coastal area the Mazda is starting to rust bad and also it as noisy as fuck inside, my gf panda that she bought for 10k brand new is quieter to ride in
This lol, I always wanted an STI but their recent styling fuckup and the general brand recognition will keep me far away
Fuck that shit
Although I will change my mind if they actually put the WRX concept into production, because hnnnnnnhg, but the current lancer copy cat is just 2sad4me
It's not can't turn, Americans have the highest proportion of racetracks and winding roads
It's more like Mitsubishi knowing a good chunk of Evo buyers were going to be 17-21 year old kids coming in with their parents and buying them as first cars.
Could you imagine if they power oversteered how many more Evos American teenagers would've punted into ditches, wrapped around trees, flew off cliffs, spun into oncoming traffic, etc? Why else do you think they cost so much to insure.
That's like everything. If people actually knew what a product's manufacturing cost was, compared to what they pay at the shelf, they'd shit themselves. Especially on clothing, electronics, and automotive stuff. Horrendous margins on the first two, and varying on cars. Some vehicles it's like 5%, others it's like 50-60%. Given the fact that Shitsubishi has been recycling the same crappy tech, gimmicks, design, and interior for a decade now, they're easily pocketing 40% or more.
Because WTAC and RLTA have a spec tire with no limits on engines. When your only real limit is your ability to hook up nearly 1000 horsepower through 235 section width street tires, light weight and AWD are by far the biggest concerns.
Did they seriously put a Deliverance reference in there?
Not if you're running Pirelli ® P-ZERO™ tires.
A bit late but here
You know, I understand that they had to "tone it down" for the production car because of regulations and things like that, but they really should have kept more of the spirit of the tail end. The production model looks like a fucking corolla.
>Plus the block is aluminum, so you can't get much out of putting more boost into it...
some stock engines with a computer tune and increased boost and compression were able to produce as much as 600 horses if not more
it's not really underpowered considering it can do 0-60 in 5 seconds if not less
I get there around midnight. They might have cameras and see me maybe but there hasn't been any efforts to keep me off the lot. Usually dealerships Park cars and block the entry ways.
>saying shit without owning either
i really like my 08 MR, it's stupid easy to drive, and a lot of fun, cobb's stage 3 is all i feel like it needed over stock
fucking everyone and their grandmother has a wrx or sti, they're boring as hell imo
serious question, I like the look of evo's, but why does everyone complain about their "glass transmission" it kind of put me off wanting one because supposedly it's so common on the cars to replace them.
The 5 speed isn't glass, the MR's dual clutch is. Kind of. The stock clutches can't handle over 350tq and going further the computer will have a hard time understanding what's going on.
The "Legendary" Japanese fighter plane from WWII was the Mitsubishi Zero. We bombed Nagasaki with the nuke because the Mitsubishi Steel and Arms Works factory was there.
The Mitsubishi factory was making more than just zeros, dude. It was vital to the infrastructure of Japan and its military.
>though it leaves a gaping hole in the ute market
No it doesn't, not when they're selling the infinitely more practical and utilitarian ranger.
And don't bother with the pretentious performance falcon utes. Complete with ox cart rear end, yet still limited 550kg payload.
