Coming from a domestic owner, I think the only thing about my car that's made in America is the TR-6060. Just a sign of the times, free market capitalists along with NAFTA encouraged increasing everything about your bottom line and most first world country workers want a livable wages as opposed to paying someone in rice in Asia.
The American auto industry took a turn because no one in Detroit imagined that they'd be in a heated battle just to stay alive in their domestic markets. They lived on top at that point for the better part of 30 years with virtually no competition. Unions offered contracts that resembled the times, GM, Ford, and Chrysler all signed them assuming the good times would keep on rolling.

Problem with Jap cars made in the USA is that most of the considerable sales profit goes back to Asia instead of remaining here. Then those Jap CEOs may buy an Airbus instead of a Boeing, or even just paying their domestic servants via trickle down economics. Buying American keeps more of the money in the country thereby increasing the chance it'll make it back to you at some point.

Do you think college Marxists (whose existence is way over estimated, most white people I've met at college have been at least somewhat conservative and most liberals are Keynesians, not Marxists anyways) are going out of their way to buy foreign cars while living off ramen and shit? The profit isn't the only thing that goes back into the economy. All of their expenses in America are income for somebody else. If x company is spending $20 million dollars a year on their American employees' salaries, and they make $2 million in profit which all goes back to Japan, they're hardly taking money out of our economy.
The UAW didn't fuck anything up more than the management at GM that didn't take foreign competition seriously in the 1970s and kept churning out pure unadulterated shit cars well into the 1980s. There's a reason why the Toyota Camry has been selling for over 30 years by now while the Chevrolet Celebrity/Corsica/Lumina lasted 5 years each.
That and being the largest employers in the country from the 50s to the 80s and agreeing to lifetime pensions and medical benefits back in a time when their workers would on average retire at 65 and die at 72. UAW workers get paid less than their foreign counterparts. Most of the UAW's labor costs are legacy costs from retirees.
In all honestly American manufacturing would be much stronger if we adopted single payer. It's why Canada still has a ton of manufacturing and we don't. Most of Michigan's factories moved right over to Ontario.

I (and my friends and family and even you) recieve some benefit from my taxes. I benefit a lot less from a centrally planned economy where I can't even decide how to generate the wealth that the government then taxes to fund the government.
