personal opinion, mk4s were the low point. Too heavy, not enough power. News ones are great performers but no where near as simple as their older counterparts. The audi sourced 2.0 is a great engine but complicated and well known for electronic gremlins. Overall still good cars though.

I've only driven a mark 2 and a mark 4, but I've been in a mark 1 and a mark 5 being driven aggressively, and a mark 3 driven by an old woman.

Mk2 is my personal favorite, but that's largely down to styling

The MK4 really was in a league of its own in how shitty it was. VW should've just made the Leon Cupra R/S3 the MKIV GTI. It was that bad. The chassis was a fat wet noodle, the suspension geometry was fucking stupid, the engines were unreliable and too easy to make power out of for their own good, brakes sucked, interior fell apart. Its a abortion of a car.

The MK5 and MK7 were both revolutionary, the MK7 in that it's literally the fastest best handling 21st GTi and the MK5 being the predecessor (what the MK4 should've been). MK6 wasn't that special/much of a upgrade from MK5 (same with MK3 vs MK2, its not that the MK6 or MK3 were "bad", they were just not as good or much of an improvement as their predecessor.

In Europe at least, "GTI" on the mk4 was a trim level, not a specific model, availabe with 1.8 20V, 1.8T 20V and 2.0 8V gasoline engines, and 110, 130 and 150 hp editions of the 1.9 diesel.

The "true" GTI was the 1.8T with 150hp and towards the end of production, 180.

Even the shitty US EP3 Si with a whopping 160hp/2700lbs drove way better than the MK4 GTI once you changed out the shitty all-seasons Honda gave it. And that was seen as a "downgrade" as a car from the 99-00 EM1 Si before it (again, 160hp/2500lbs)

The MKIV was truly shit. It shouldn't even be called a GTI.
