I'm getting a bike soon, should I get a brand new hyosung 250 or should I just go with a used ninja 300? When I sat on the hyo, it felt more aggressive and heavier, so I'm thinking it might be better to learn on if I want to get a super sport in the future. But then again the ninja's a bit more powerful and refined, plus better reputation for reliability. Getting parts isn't a big deal for me, I have a local shop that can get me parts for both bikes. I'm also decently capable at working on my own vehicle so work shouldn't be too big an issue (still don't want a lemon though obviously).
Or should I just abandon both ideas entirely and just get an older ninja 250? It just seems like they're so old at this point that it'd be easier and cheaper to buy a newer more reliable bike.
are you limited to 300cc? if so, I personally would get a Ninja 300 over the Hyosung since i was gonna get myself a Hyosung GV650 and was talked out of it by a guy on dbt who had 16 faults over 12 months with his GV.
If however you can ride bigger bikes and just want a learners bike, get a GS500E /F. cost should vary from 1000-2000 for a decent used one. it was my first bike for a year and i was happy

anyone done a valve adjustment before? i have an i4 and gotta remove the camshafts to get the buckets off. i've read a lot of tutorials, and it doesnt seem too damn difficult. the hardest/most annoying part seems like draining and removing the radiator, kinda. i'm gonna check my clearances no problem, but my oil's already drained and i got some new coolant right here, so if they need an adjustment, i might wanna do it.

Yeah, I didn't think about that. I told my riding buddy about what happened when I met up with him after that happened, and he told me I was an idiot for not putting the kickstand down since I had it laid down on the right side. Lesson learned

Depends on bike. All that you described seems pretty complicated compared to how it goes on my GSX600F (i4 16-valve DOHC, oil-cooled (there's a radiator for oil), shim-over-bucket valve adjustment):
>remove front fairings, fuel tank, cross brace, ignition coils and disconnect some wiring and the throttle cable (they're in the way)
>valve cover is held on by 14 bolts, remove those
>remove valve cover
>remove spark plugs and signal generator cover so you can turn the engine over using a 19mm wrench or socket
>measure valve clearance while turning engine from signal generator nut to get camshafts to different positions for different cylinders
For every valve out of spec:
>with a pair of pliers, slide rocker arm to side, jam against side of cam
>with a magnet, remove old shim, replace with shim of correct thickness, release rocker arm (a spring snaps it back), measure again
>repeat until all valves within spec
>reinstall signal generator cover, gaskets, valve cover, ignition components, cross brace, throttle cable and wiring, fuel tank, front fairing
I thought all DOHCs had the cam press directly on the bucket.
On my DRZ it wasn't hard, even when I had to remove the cams to adjust the valves. I don't know how hard it would be on an I4 though. Seems like it would be hard to get the cams in and out if you can't have all 4 cylinders at TDC at the same time.
Nah, that thing circled in red is the rocker arm which presses on the shim which presses on the bucket which presses on the valve. They slide towards each other, you can see the spring between the two arms. No need to remove camshafts.
doesn't seem that hard, idk. how hard could i fuck up? i did a clutch change, dug some plate scraps of metal out of the sump, and removed the headers. that's the hardest stuff i've done so far.

Just make sure you have it on the right cam position when you check your valves, and be sure to put everything back together the way it was. If you have to remove the cams make sure you know at what orientation to put them back in.
Other than that the worst thing you can do is drop something down into your head.

Oh I haven't seen one like that. On my DRZ the cam pressed on the bucket. Under the bucket was the shim that pressed on the valve tappet or whatever it is that presses the valve open.
On my KTM there's a single cam that I think presses a rocker arm on each side for intake/exhaust which presses on the tappet or whatever that piece is called.
I don't understand the need for the rocker arms when all the valves are aligned like that.
What makes it even freakier is that after 1998 they changed the design so that there's only 8 cam lobes pressing down on the 16 valves via 8 two-pronged rockers. You can somewhat see it in the picture. Thank god they made the adjustment screw-and-locknut rather than shim-over-bucket.
I had it held straight up. I even tried leaning it to the side with the glass on it to see if I could see any flow over. Nothing. It seemed to take quite a bit of oil before it showed in the glass again too. It was weird.
I did have it laying on its side about 20 minutes before that. Maybe that could have made it all flow to the head but it seems unlikely that it would still be there.
Also I forgot forgot to put the cap back on after adding more to it, so it sprayed all over the place when I started it after that lol. Got fucking everything all oily.

The BQE is closest because I usually meet up with few riding buddies near Ceasars bay, take Belt parkway S.i. bound and end up on BQE, or take belt parkway to JFK, and go to southernstate etc.
