I'll give you a little list from personal experience and for under $2000

Toyota Camry or Corrolla (safe, auto, not amazingly powerful, pretty boring looking but ultra reliable)
BMW E36 (you can probably only get a 318i for under 2k, safe, handles great, not very powerful, reliable if maintained but shit if not)
Ford or Holden (reliable but dull, probably owned by a bogan if its under 2k, tonnes around so easy to find a cheap one)
VW Golf (not common in auto but a fun little hatchback, reliability is unknown, one of the ultimate driving cars)
But NEVER buy an Audi or Mercedes for cheap, the parts are crazily expensive on those.
