E36/46 M3 would've been a reasonable opponent, and did well against even the best Japanese sports cars (R34 GTR, Latest FD RX7/NSXs, Evo/STis). E36s are also reasonably common in Japan for a European car, with a few used as race cars there.

Just type in Best Motoring M3 into YouTube, they reviewed a few of them.

E36 compact. Never offered with the M3 engine, uses the E30's antiquated suspension, pretty light too.
