I am not that guy, but I would say that the miata is at least less of a sports car than the rx7. I honestly think that if the car only comes in convertible, it is a true sports car. You need a full roof to get the best out of a chassis. Convertibles really suck in bad weather as well.

that isn't the case, because convertibles don't have the mechanical advantage of a roof, making them heavier than a car with a roof for the same amount of body rigidity. It does help that he miata was designed to not have a roof as apposed to originally having one, and being made into a convertible, but if it was designed to have a roof, then it would be better. I am not knocking the miata, I like it alot, but it is a shame that they didn't make one with a proper roof, or I would actually own one.

You realize that adding a roll cage does the same thing as adding a roof right. And a hard top does nothing in the way of providing structure to the chassis. Why do you think the most recommended track and autocross upgrade to the miata are chassis braces? Also a roll cage is just adding more structure that could have been added with a roof, but is actually heavier than a roof would be for the same amount of stiffness, especially added to the weight of the additional structure mazda had to add to keep the convertible as stiff as it is in the first place without a roof.

Do you really think the SC400 is a sports car comparable to the miata though? I own one, and it's really comfy and has a really smooth engine, but the thing is heavy as balls and the suspension is soft. The thing handles like a boat.

I think as an entire package the sc400 is more capable. Yes it is has a fairly soft suspension from the factory, but if you stiffen it up and drop some interior to shed weight, it would be super quick and agile. Keep in mind it is a luxury sports car, so it is designed around comfort first, then handling second. Also it has an amazingly reliable engine, just look at Matt Farah's million mile lexus, which is an LS400, which has the exact same drivetrain.

I think for someone seeking easy driving pleasure, an MR2 or Miata is far more suitable. I am a sucker for a cheap and reliable v8 with fuel injection. I am more of a built vs bought guy, so I wouldn't mind putting in the work to develop the car into something amazing. There are so many miata's and MR2's, so I would prefer to have something not so common, and bandwagon-y. I am a fan of the drivetrain itself, and I would love to build it up to a NA to Turbocharged powerhouse. I get the appeal of the others, and I would definitely like to own an MR2 someday, but the SC400 is a personal best in the under $5k bracket of cars.
