Serious question:What's the purpose of 60hp hatchbacks in Europe, with all those great roads and a couple parts of unrestricted highway in one country? Isn't it rather frustrating to have such great roads but cars with no potential?

To get to work and back. To go shopping. That's it. Different people, different priorities. I was actually hesitant making this post, because this thread feels like bait.

I am living in germany and here are a lot of small 60 hp cars. A lot of people care about mpg and cheap insurance. They just want to drive from A to B.
On the other side you see a lot of fast mercedes or bmws.

They're appliance cars in the same way the US are full of Camrys and Accords, only a little smaller and with a more practical cargo area.

And the European formula for driving fun usually prioritizes low weight over high power. I pity Americans who buy sporty cars and then have to drive them on grids and five lane highways 90% of the time.

Kind of. Electric cars and hybrids are being pushed really hard, and everyone uses a bike for city commutes. Cycling isn't a hobby, it's the main mode of transport for many people.
Inspections are fairly lenient though, especially compared to Germany, so modding is doable if you have the money.

>>14185041
Laws are the same across the states though, right? I mean, I know there's some differences, but they're a lot smaller than between the countries in Europe afaik.

Not quite. The Astra gets as low as 100, and you can get 60bhp 1.0l Corsas still, but those are a class below, and they aren't particularly popular.

I reckon the vast majority of new cars sold out here sit somewhere between 90 and 150bhp.

The 4cyl versions sold poorly, they were discontinued. Also the T&C has been the most popular Minivan in 'Murrica for quite some time. Hell, VW rebadged the T&C as the Routan instead of engineering their own Minivan for the U.S. market.

>>
>>14185140

>>14185149

>>14185136
So by your logic a Prius is quick and nippy then?

>Your Jetta also weighs in about 1400kg.

His Jetta is easily faster than your car, power to weight/gearing/traction all play into acceleration. Not just peak HP or TQ numbers.
>>
>>14185136
Uhh ive done the calculations and at 190 HP with 93 octane im at almost double the power to weight ratio of your punto.

Even on standard 87 pump gas ive still got a much superior power to weight ratio.

>So by your logic a Prius is quick and nippy then?
The electric engine in the Prius produces 400Nm alone. It's quite obvious it would do that 0-60 time while being pigfat.

I mean the difference between having a car that's actually quick, and the person in the next lane trying to keep you from getting around them but not being able to do anything about it.

>>14185196

That old Prius was only 2800lbs and change. Not really "pigfat" seeing as a Corolla is roughly the same.
