Had a DT125X when I was 16-18, but sold it in favor for a car that I could use all year and was a lot more practical

I feel for you dude. I got ride of my bike because I got hit by an 18 wheeler due to some stupid Russian bitch cutting him off merging. I was in my 4runner at the time or I would've easily been killed. Once I crawled out of the mangled mess I sold the bike as soon as I could. If I lived in a small town with no traffic I'd get a bike, but with the way these idiots drive there's just no way. Over a decade later and I still have back, neck, and foot issues sometimes. I also witnessed a chick slam into a telephone pole while on her phone recently. I was walking to grab lunch on the other side of the road. Offroad only for me now.

Because all it takes is some dumb shit not paying attention and T-bone you at 50mph and you are deader then dead. At least in a modern car you have a extremely good chance of only sustaining minor injuries. One guy I worked with had a friend who was riding his bike and had a car pull out in front of him while he was doing ~50mph on a back country road. He didn't even get a chance to try and stop before he became rocket man and flew through the air onto the pavement. He lived for a days before dying. You can be the safest rider in the world and all it takes is some dumb bitch texting to ram into you at 50mph and you're dead.

it's really not that dangerous all things considered unless you're a total moron.. i have 4 bikes 2 dual sport and two street.. i ride about 30 000 + km a year (i live in a winter climate and i sometimes commute 150+km in the summer) i crash about once a year because i'm a bit reckless and do crazy stuff with my smaller bikes..

all my crashes have been at reasonable speeds and haven't involved anyone else and haven't done much damage to me or my bikes.. i've never crashed my bigger more expensive bikes because i'm careful

everyone has a friend of a friend who died on a bike but a whole branch of my family tree was wiped out in an suv by a suicidal woman going the wrong way on the freeway

if you are aware of your surroundings and keep in the back of your mind that you're invisible you'll probably be fine

Driving a motorcycle will become enormously safer in ~10 years when most cars on the road have active crash avoidance (if not outright self-driving).

I'm not sure if it's on the horizon, but simply fitting all motorcycles with transponders that cars pick up on, and so know to avoid, would be pretty fucking incredible, and seems easily and cheaply doable when even current off-the-shelf tech. Why isn't this happening?

Would seem very easy to eliminate all accidents where cars/trucks pull in front of / merge into bikes. Would also stop cars from running lights and stop signs (since the car would see the light/sign and stop automatically). And would stop them from rear-ending bikes when the driver doesn't see them (since the computer in the car will).

That's basically all two-vehicle accidents eliminated. Great thing for car drivers/passengers as well, but active avoidance (as opposed to crash protection after the fact) is especially important for bikes.

My bike is my daily commute. I've crunched the numbers and I save money by riding. This includes extra insurance, repairs, gas savings, discount on parking (because I take up the only spot in the lot a car won't fit in). Because of this I'll ride 10 months in a year.
