From what I've seen, anybody who is too dedicated and immersed into any hobby is a "nerd". Whether PC's, video games, music, cars, etc. Having a mild interest in cars is still a good thing. Something to talk to normies about at a party. Not quite as bro as sports.

Wrenching on cars isn't the same as it was 25+ years ago, it's a shame. Everything car related has become more complicated and expensive. It is because of this that you have to be fairly dedicated to the hobby and culture revolving around cars, and this makes you a "nerd" of sorts.

I'm 25 years old.

When I try to talk with my coworkers, friends, and others my age about cars I may as well be talking to a wall. I threw an aftermarket cam, headers, pushrods, lifters etc. in my car and they all ask me why it sounds like it's running like crap. Then they tell me to take it to a mechanic.

Then I try explaining what a camshaft is and how it works and the different kinds and specs of cams you can get. In return I get the 'deer in headlights' look from them. They ask why I would even want to change engine parts "isn't the engine in there good enough already?"
They wonder why I'm so into cars but they just don't get it.
The fact that I own four shitboxes just perplexes them to no end.
