Unless there's an Evo somewhere in the Lancer's name, pass on it, the non-evolution lancers are basically just family cars. The Miata will be more enjoyable, and there is so much you can do with them in aftermarket/tuning than an 03 lancer that looks and drives about as excitingly as a corolla

When I was in highschoool I used to daily a 76 camaro. It was alright, I spent $2800 on it and a couple hundred extra for repairs, it was in pretty bad condition when I got but it did its job for the most part.
My father dailys an 85 HJ60 landcruiser which goes fairly well, every now and then it has an issue or two so he has to take the bus but it pretty reliable.
Just make sure you have some form of transport or way of getting somewhere when the car does fuck up.

Anyone have one of these? I'm trying to decide if the extra $7k is paying for the Merc with a V8 or if the Supercharged V6 is really nice. 2014 is the last year you can get a non AMG V8 so that's kinda special but I understand that superchargers have nice power bands.

Buy a cheap rust bucket that's a common platform with plenty of cheap parts (IE, 88-95 Civic, Fox Body, Corollas, etc...) Whatever you want, just make sure it's a well-documented platform with plenty of DIY tutorials and videos online.
Then you could fix it up on the cheap and learn by actually "doing". You could probably even sell it and make most of your money back depending on what the condition is like when you buy/sell it.

Eh, there is really nothing wrong with either. It depends on what you want from your drive, standard might be more fun and for someone looking to enjoy the drive, but auto might be more practical for a daily if you run into traffic often on your commute.
There is a better argument to be had for knowing both, rather than owning one or the other.

I recently had my Miata totalled due to a not at fault accident.
They're giving me $5500 for my Miata. I currently have an s2000 that's worth about $17000-$18500 and I owe $19000 on it. Problem is that my Miata was my winter car and now I have to get something new.
I want something that is newer and safer, and right now I can get a brand new fiesta st for around 16-17k. Would it be a financially sound decision to put down $5500 for it and finance that along with the s2000?

it's surprisingly pretty quick, my friend has one with stick shift and it's nimble af.
