His opponents are doing terribly because the republican party is not a proper political party, and hasn't been sinch Bush.

The GOP has defined itself in opposition to the democrats, which have lurched to the right in recent times. They have no party policy to speak of and so have cultivated fringe support from kooks like the tea party. Now some loudmouth has come along who can rally those kooks better than anyone else, by pure virtue of him being the most famous of them all. He can't formulate a logical tax plan, he can't even give a coherent speech and once the primary is over he will be exposed.

Once the primary is over he will be fighting over the votes of a very different demographic of people. And he doesn't have the oratory skills to win the support of those people.
