It has been an arduous battle for Jakarta's Christian governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama. Thousands of his supporters have also been protesting against the charges blasphemy against Islam which are the basis for the harsh sentence imposed on him. Purnama has stated from the beginning he was just quoting from the Koran.

Reuters reports that Jakarta's Christian governor has been sentenced to two years in jail for blasphemy, a harsher-than-expected ruling critics fear will embolden hardline Islamist forces to challenge secularism in Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim-majority nation. Tuesday's guilty verdict for Basuki Tjahaja Purnama comes amid concern about the growing influence of Islamist groups, who organized mass rallies during a tumultuous election campaign that ended with Purnama losing his bid for another term as governor.

NEWPORT— A Newport couple was arrested for child neglect/abuse and animal cruelty after Newport Officers found a residence occupied by 22 neglected animals along with a neglected 2-month-old child on Tuesday, Dec. 27.

Capt. Amy Gentry and Patrolman Mike Robey were dispatched to 596 Freeman Ave., to assist Animal Control Officer Lisa Laymen on a welfare check of a pit bull.

Upon their arrival, officers noticed the pit bull was severely malnourished and its ribs were visible as a result from starvation. Officers then made contact with the owner, Katherine Ann Cogdill, 27, who said there were more animals inside the residence.

As Officers searched through the home to conduct a welfare check on the other animals, they found a total of 11 snakes, two spiders, three dogs, two cats, and four lizards, with one deceased, but still in the cage.

According to the report, all animals did not have water and the cages had not been cleaned in weeks. Capt. Gentry said the floors of every room in the residence were covered in animal feces and urine.

Officers also found a two-month-old child, who was dirty, all of his bottles were moldy, and his blanket was crawling with fleas. In addition, his play pin was in three feet of a cage that contained 12’ Burmes python with no secured lock, along with three other tanks of snakes.

4chan, Gods of the Internet. I need your help. The woman arrested in this article happens to be the ex-wife of a man my friend in Tennessee is dating. The charges against her were dropped (lol "justice" system) and because she's free to walk, she's still able to visit her ex-husband's son, who is being looked after by my friend.

I'm fearing for her safety as this woman is dangerous and shouldn't be around kids. Actions should have consequences and I want to let this woman know you can't starve a child and just sweep it under the rug. Let's get this story out there!

>No women sat on the five-strong committee which voted against the bill, which means that rape victims who choose to bear the child will still have to negotiate with their attackers over custody rights or whether they put the child up for adoption.

>It is the ninth time that politicians in the US state have voted against a proposed changes. So it remains one of just seven out of the 50 US states not have a similar law in place.

>The latest version of a bill launched 10-years ago by Kathleen Dumais had the support of a wide spectrum of groups, from Planned Parenthood organisations to the Maryland Catholic Conference.

>After it was voted down, her colleague Senator Cheryl Kagan told the Baltimore Sun: "Although I have great respect for my colleagues, not having women on the committee was tone-deaf."
>>
>Ms Kagan said looked over the men on the committee because "I wanted to watch as the conscience for women and rape survivors".

>The decision was strongly criticised by women’s rights advocates.

>"I think we're both angered and disappointed," Lisae Jordan, director of the Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault, told Broadly.

>Ms Jordan added there weren’t a large number of cases of rape victims going on to have a child conceived in the assault. But she said that her group did come across women who were involved in legal disputes with their rapists because of inadequate legal support.

>She continued: "It's traumatic for someone to have to parent with their rapist. It’s frightening.

>“It's something that raises concerns about the effect not only on the rape survivor but also on the child."

>However, Ms Jordan welcomed a new law introduced in Maryland this week, which stopped victims of sexual assault from having to prove they used physical force to resist a rape.

>"Sexual assault survivors will no longer be forced to choose between keeping safe or having access to justice," Ms Jordan told Buzzfeed News.

Those are the absolute numbers, though. If you take deaths per population Mexico is the least violent by far. It's still pretty bad, but if you're mexican you're far less likely to die as part of an armed conflict than people from any of the other countries mentioned

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2017/04/26/24-national-monuments-threatened-trumps-executive-order/100925418/

WASHINGTON — At least two dozen national monuments are at risk of losing their federally protected status as a result of President Trump's executive order asking for an unprecedented review of their designations.

Under the 1906 Antiquities Act, either Congress or the President can protect federal lands by designating them as a national monument. And while Congress has occasionally revoked that status for existing monuments, no president ever has. Trump's order opens the door to that possibility.
Trump is targeting all or part of monuments that make up 100,000 acres or more, and were created by presidential proclamation since 1996. The White House released a list of 24 of them on Wednesday.

Unlike the other monuments, which are managed by the Interior Department, San Gabriel is managed by the Forest Service, part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Zinke spokeswoman Heather Swift said she could not rule out action on San Gabriel. The Department of Agriculture did not respond to an inquiry about the status of the monument.

The executive order also allows for a review of sites smaller than 100,000 acres “where the Secretary determines that the designation or expansion was made without adequate public outreach and coordination with relevant stakeholders.”

Borrower fraud in U.S. auto loans is surging, and may approach levels seen in mortgages during last decade’s housing bubble, according to a startup firm that helps lenders sniff out bogus borrowers.

As many as 1 percent of U.S. car loan applications include some type of material misrepresentation, executives at data analytics firm Point Predictive estimated based on reports from banks, finance companies and others. Lenders’ losses from deception may double this year to $6 billion from 2015, the firm forecast.

Those fraud rates are coming closer to the over-1-percent level for mortgages in 2009, when the financial crisis was boiling and more lenders started reporting incidents to one another, Frank McKenna, chief fraud strategist at the firm, said in an interview. While those losses will sting lenders, the impact on the overall economy will likely be much more muted than with the housing crisis, just because there’s less car debt outstanding.

Even so, “We see an extraordinary amount of parallels between the auto and mortgage industries, in terms of the rising levels of hidden fraud,” McKenna said. For home loans, it’s hard to know how widespread the deception was before 2009, because lenders often didn’t report information to one another and may not have even investigated incidents of probable lying much on their own, McKenna said.

Dealer Fraud

Point Predictive has put together a consortium of lenders to share data about dealers and loans. The group, now 13 strong, met at the headquarters of Santander Consumer USA in Dallas last month. Common types of fraud include borrowers lying about their income and their jobs, including falsifying paystubs. Loan applications can also include bogus information about the type of car being financed, or its value. The deception can be perpetrated by consumers, or car dealers, or both.

Auto lenders including banks and finance companies are concerned about consumer fraud, and they’re often even more concerned about fraud among dealers, said Kimberly Sutherland, senior director for fraud and identity management strategy at LexisNexis Risk Solutions in Alpharetta, Georgia. Dealers have an incentive to complete sales, and may better know how to tweak paperwork to get bad loans funded than a regular consumer, said Sutherland, whose firm helps lenders identify risks in their portfolios.

About 3 percent of dealers can be responsible for all of a lender’s fraudulent applications, Point Predictive said in a February report. Losses from auto loan fraud this year will likely be $4 billion to $6 billion, up from $2 billion to $3 billion in 2015, the firm said.

During the housing bubble, as few as 3 percent of mortgage brokers helped perpetrate most or all of the reported fraud, Point Predictive said. Loans that required little or no documentation allowed borrowers and brokers to lie about employment, salary, and other key facts about their financial condition. One borrower’s application for a mortgage said she made $6,900 a month, when she actually made about $3,286.

Growing Trouble

Trouble is growing in auto loans. The total amount of the debt outstanding has risen more than 50 percent since the end of 2010, a rapid increase. Delinquencies among subprime auto loan borrowers are jumping, and in the fourth quarter of 2016, there was over $1.1 billion of consumer car debt that lenders could not collect, Point Predictive said. In a Federal Reserve survey released Monday, banks said they had tightened their underwriting standards for car loans.

But that won’t necessarily translate into a repeat of the mortgage crisis, because the auto financing market is so much smaller. There was around $1.1 trillion of car loans outstanding at the end of last year, compared with around $10.3 trillion of residential mortgages.
>>
There are cities in the U.S. where borrowers are more likely to default on their car loans within a few months of buying their cars, often a sign of a loan obtained fraudulently. Those “hot spots” include Fort Myers, Florida; Salem, Massachusetts; Gatesville, Texas; Miami; and Laurel, Maryland, Point Predictive said.

DBRS Inc., a ratings firm that assigns grades to bonds backed by auto loans, similarly warned of auto lending fraud in a recent report. Cars can be relocated and sold in used-car markets before lenders repossess them, making vehicles an “appealing” target “to those looking to fraudulently apply for auto loans.”

Some car lenders have been shoring up their collections processes. Santander Consumer USA, one of the biggest makers of subprime auto loans, stopped accepting credit card payments from its borrowers, for example. Other lenders are using sophisticated devices that can track a vehicle, or even turn off an ignition, making it easier to repossess a car.

Not surprising but a good informative story. It was the business model of many small banks back then to offer loans to unqualified applicants knowing they would default with a plan to package the defaults into derivatives. God bless the Glass-Steagal Banking Act of 1933, may it rest in peace.

>It’s a bittersweet moment, bidding farewell to this series. It’s definitely time for it to be over, time for Feminist Frequency as an organization and for me personally to move on. But I keep thinking about all the ways that the world of video games has changed since that day, almost five years ago, when I first took my modest little Kickstarter live. It hasn’t all been for the better, but some of it definitely has. There are conversations happening now, among players and among creators, that weren’t happening before, about who games are for (everyone!), about what impact they can have, what they can tell us about humanity, empathy, race, gender, sexuality, the world we live in, and the world we want to create for ourselves.

>Three women - including one who said her only crime was laughing - were convicted Wednesday on charges of disrupting the confirmation hearing of U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

>The women were part of activist group Code Pink and were protesting Sessions' Jan. 10 Senate confirmation hearing. Two of the women, Tighe Barry and Lenny Bianchi, appeared at the Washington, D.C. hearing dressed as Ku Klux Klan members. They were acquitted on a count of disorderly conduct but convicted on two separate charges of parading or demonstrating, the New York Times reported.

>A third woman, Desiree Fairooz of Virginia, was found guilty of disorderly conduct and parading or demonstrating on Capitol grounds.

>Each faces up to 12 months in prison.

>Fairooz, who wore a pink Lady Liberty costume to the Sessions' hearings, maintained all she did during the testimony was laugh. The 61-year-old woman previously declined to accept a plea bargain from prosecutors, opting to move ahead with the case.

>The three women had pleaded not guilty of all charges.

>Fairooz explained her laughter was in response to a comment by Alabama Senator Richard Shelby, who said Sessions had a record of "treating all Americans equally under the law is clear and well-documented."

>"I just couldn't hold it," Fairooz reportedly said during the trial. "It was spontaneous. It was an immediate rejection of what I considered an outright lie or pure ignorance."

>Prosecutors contended the women planned to "impede, disrupt, and disturb the orderly conduct" of the hearing.

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/world/pentagon-draws-up-plan-to-boost-us-troops-in-afghanistan/news-story/d013cb566aefb416382ca94bdf27630b

Donald Trump will consider boosting US troops in Afghanistan to combat a resurgent Taliban in what would be a reversal of the drawdown of forces under Barack Obama.

The potentially pivotal moment in the US commitment to Afghanistan has come after the Pentagon drew up plans for at least 3000 extra US troops to bolster the 8400 in the war-torn country.

The President has yet to consider the proposal but, if he accepts the Pentagon’s recommendation, he will be increasing America’s commitment to the conflict that has claimed the lives of more than 2300 US soldiers since 2001.

The plan is aimed at forcing the Taliban — which has thrived since the US withdrew the bulk of its troops from the country — back to the negotiating table.

It follows the massacre in a northern army base last month in which Taliban fighters killed more than 140 Afghan soldiers.

The strategy drawn up by the Pentagon seeks to curb the rising frequency of Taliban attacks. It would authorise the Pentagon, rather than the White House, to set troop numbers in that country.

Mr Trump is expected to announce his decision on the Pentagon’s proposal by the NATO summit on May 25. The President would ask NATO countries to match any increase in US troop numbers in Afghanistan

The recommendation is being pushed by National Security Adviser HR McMaster, who was one of the forces behind the surge in Iraq under George W. Bush.

It would reverse the trend of steady US withdrawal from Afghanistan under Mr Obama, who was wary of the dwindling public support for the 15-year war and the mounting casualties.

The new strategy would allow for greater US air support of Afghan operations and allow US military advisers to accompany local forces near to conflict zones.

http://www.techtimes.com/articles/155767/20160503/ancient-dna-europeans-descended-belgians.htm

>Ancient DNA left over from the last ice age shows that all Europeans, at one time, were descended from early humans living in Belgium. Analysis of genomes also suggested our distant ancestors underwent significant evolutionary changes during the Ice Age and a few thousand years following that frigid era.

>A total of 51 genetic samples were examined in the latest study, a vast improvement in understanding compared with the four examples available previous to now.

>Temperatures began to warm in Europe roughly 19,000 years ago, freeing the continent of widespread ice sheets. As the frozen cover receded, human populations from modern-day Spain migrated toward the north. Approximately 5,000 years after that time, a second group of people began to travel from southeastern Europe into northern and western regions of the continent. These migrants from Greece and Turkey displaced the earlier population.

>The last major ice age peaked between 35,000 and 19,000 years before the modern day, coming to an end around 12,000 years ago. At the height of this period, ice cover reached as far south as northern France.

>Modern humans first entered Europe roughly 45,000 years before the modern age. This migration spelled the end of Neanderthals, which had previously inhabited the continent. All of the ancient Europeans examined in this study exhibited lineages that traced back to a population that lived 37,000 years ago in a region that would later be known as Belgium. This group was later displaced, and a new population arrived in Europe 14,000 years ago, traveling from the east.
