http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/338239-trump-hires-another-lawyer-for-russia-probe

>President Trump has hired another lawyer in the wake of the ongoing investigation into alleged ties between his campaign and Russian election meddling.

>Washington legal veteran John Dowd will join Marc Kasowitz, Michael Bowe and Jay Sekulow in representing the president in the investigation, a spokesman for the team said Friday, according to Reuters.

>Dowd has represented a number of high-profile clients in the past, including Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on congressional ethics charges in a banking scandal in the 1980s and 1990s. McCain was eventually cleared in the matter.

>News of the Trump’s latest legal hire comes after the president revealed Friday on Twitter he was under investigation for firing FBI director James Comey.

>Trump is not the only person in his administration who has hired outside counsel in recent days. Vice President Pence’s staff announced Thursday he hired Virginia attorney Richard Cullen to represent him in the investigation.

>Trump’s personal lawyer Michael Cohen also reportedly hired D.C. attorney Stephen Ryan.

Well, looks like role reversal to me.

I mean, how much people can take before they go nuts and decide it's time for revenge, even though it's unjustified? As a fan of Jeremy Corbyn and regular Guardian reader, I am appalled by this latest development.

What do YOU think?

We should never assign blame to populations, i.e. muslims, nationalists, supremacists, &c. for the actions of a subset of them.

We should always blame individuals that directly support violence (killing or arming murderers so that they murder) and we should blame violent ideas like Islam and white-supremacy.

It doesn't matter how many terrorists there are on either side.

Only exception would be if a group becomes such an existential threat that the rest of us literally are under immediate risk. Then we can't afford to make those distinctions because they're about to come under control of a nuclear arsenal or something and use it to cause Armageddon.

White supremacy = defending your nation from invaders
>>
>>150258

You can come up with good arguments for defending your country from invaders without white supremacy. Using white supremacy to justify that just comes with a lot of unnecessary ideological baggage that is inherently dehumanizing of non-whites such that it legitimizes violence against innocent people.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/26/us/politics/trump-obama-russian-election-meddling.html?partner=rss&emc=rss

>WASHINGTON — President Trump has accused his predecessor of “doing nothing” in response to Russia’s interference in the 2016 election — a misleading statement that contradicts his previous comments.

>Mr. Trump’s latest assertions were made after The Washington Post reported on Friday that President Barack Obama was aware of Russia’s campaign as early as August, but did not publicize the findings for fear of politicizing the election and of escalating aggression from the Kremlin.

>“I just heard today for the first time that Obama knew about Russia a long time before the election, and he did nothing about it. But nobody wants to talk about that,” Mr. Trump said in an interview with “Fox and Friends” that aired on Sunday. “If he had the information, why didn’t he do anything about it?”

>Mr. Trump has consistently refused to acknowledge Russia’s involvement, and his assertions about Mr. Obama and his own ignorance are highly misleading. Here’s an assessment.

Mr. Trump’s claim of receiving recent knowledge is false.

>Since last summer, the accusations of Russian cyberattacks have been widely reported, and it is clear that Mr. Obama — and Mr. Trump — were aware of the malfeasance, though Mr. Trump has repeatedly refused to acknowledge that Russia was behind the hacking.

>The Democratic National Committee said last June that Russian hackers had obtained a trove of internal emails and opposition research, prompting Mr. Trump to suggest that the committee fabricated the story or hacked itself.

“We believe it was the D.N.C. that did the ‘hacking’ as a way to distract from the many issues facing their deeply flawed candidate and failed party leader,” he said in a statement. “Too bad the D.N.C. doesn’t hack Hillary Clinton’s 33,000 missing emails.”

>>
>A month later, as consensus grew within the intelligence community that Russia was the culprit, Mr. Trump declined to condemn President Vladimir V. Putin.

>“Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing,” Mr. Trump said at a news conference, referring to emails deleted from Mrs. Clinton’s private servers. On Monday, the White House spokesman, Sean Spicer, said during a briefing that Mr. Trump was “kidding” at the time.

>As the official nominees of their parties, Mr. Trump and Mrs. Clinton began receiving intelligence briefings in early August. On Sept. 22, Democrats leading the House and Senate Intelligence Committees issued a statement accusing Russia “based on briefings we have received.” Four days later, during the first presidential debate, Mr. Trump declined to agree, adding that it could be China or “somebody sitting on their bed that weighs 400 pounds.”

>On Oct. 7, the director of national intelligence and the Department of Homeland Security issued a joint statement saying they were “confident that the Russian government” had directed the cyberattacks.

>Mr. Trump again expressed doubt that Russia was responsible. During the second presidential debate, he said, “Maybe there’s no hacking.”

His charge that Mr. Obama “did nothing” is also incorrect.

>Though some Democrats were dissatisfied with Mr. Obama’s response and say his administration should have done more, Mr. Obama did act.

>John O. Brennan, the former director of the Central Intelligence Agency, warned his Russian counterpart against meddling on Aug. 4, 2016, according to his testimony to Congress in late May. Around this time, the Department of Homeland Security also warned state governments of attempts to access voter registration systems and encouraged them to seek assistance, Jeh Johnson, the former Homeland Security secretary, has said.
>>
>In September, Mr. Obama warned Mr. Putin directly at a Group of 20 summit meeting in China. Mr. Obama confirmed at a news conference in December that he had told Mr. Putin to “cut it out,” and explained that he held back from retaliating for fear of Russia escalating the cyberattacks.

>On Dec. 29, Mr. Obama imposed sanctions on Russia and ejected 35 people suspected of being Russian intelligence operatives. Two days later, Mr. Trump said he still wasn’t convinced. (Last week, The Post reported that Mr. Obama had also authorized the planting of cyberweapons in Russia’s infrastructure.)

>On Jan. 6, the office of the director of national intelligence released a declassified report. After being briefed that day on the cyberattacks, Mr. Trump issued a statement pointing to “Russia, China and other countries.”

>After his inauguration, Mr. Trump expanded the pool of culpability in multiple interviews and still would not formally declare Russia responsible.

>This spring, numerous intelligence officials, including Mr. Brennan and Mr. Johnson, have testified before Congress and confirmed that Russia meddled in the election. James R. Clapper Jr., the former director of national intelligence, said in an interview that he was “absolutely” certain of Russia’s actions. James B. Comey, the former F.B.I. director, also said he had “no doubt” of it.

>Mr. Spicer was asked whether the president believes that Russia interfered in the 2016 election.

>“I have not sat down and talked to him about that specific thing,” Mr. Spicer said.

The House Intelligence Committee next week plans to interview John Podesta as part of its investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign, according to a new report.

CNN reported Thursday night that the meeting with Podesta, Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman last year, will occur in private.

Intelligence agencies say Podesta's email account was hacked by the Russians. The contents of Podesta's emails were made public by WikiLeaks in the months before the election.

Israel Deployed 18 Fighter Jets To Saudi Arabia To "Prevent A Coup": Fars

TEHRAN (FNA)- 18 Israeli fighter jets along with two Gulfstream aircraft landed in Saudi Arabia on Thursday to prevent any hostile or military moves by former Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef bin Abdulaziz who was replaced with Saudi King Salman's son.
Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz announced on Wednesday his decision to replace Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef bin Abdulaziz with his own son, Mohammed bin Salman.

After the decision was announced, the Israeli air force sent 18 of its fighter jets, including F16I, F15CD and F16CD, along with two Gulfstream aircraft, two tanker airplanes and two C130 planes, special for electronic warfare, to Saudi Arabia at the demand of the new crown prince bin Salman to block his cousin (bin Nayef)'s possible measures.

A new proposal by an anti-Trump Democrat on the Federal Election Commission would expand the federal government's probe into alleged Russian influence to foreign companies and internet sites that take political ads, like Facebook or the Drudge Report, while giving the FEC an unprecedented role that some say oversteps its authority.

Democratic Commissioner Ellen Weintraub, citing petitions from leftist groups demanding a wider investigation, on Thursday plans to push for commission support for her idea.

"This is an all-hands-on-deck moment for our democracy," she wrote

She is urging the FEC to look into political spending by foreign sources on the internet, including Facebook, and presumably any other site that runs political ads, like the Drudge Report or Huffington Post. As part of that she called for open- and closed-door briefings by Justice and Treasury financial officials on the issue.

If a foreign power wanted to buy advertising in support of a candidate how could the FEC respond?

If they punish that candidate, foreign powers can simply 'back' the guy the want to cause trouble for.

http://variety.com/2017/tv/news/nbc-megyn-kelly-problem-1202474927/

>It’s still months before Megyn Kelly’s new NBC daytime show is set to premiere, but it already feels like the former Fox News anchor has overstayed her welcome. Only three weeks into her Sunday-night newsmagazine show — a “Dateline” style piece, structured around her interviews with high-profile “gets” — Kelly’s star is dimmer than ever. It’s a far cry from where she was just a year ago.

>2016 was a banner year for Kelly: After a wave of flattering media coverage, she led round-the-clock election coverage for Fox News — anchoring one of its highest-rated programs, “The Kelly File,” and shoring up the network’s credibility on women’s issues as it reported on, and sometimes sparred with, then-candidate Donald Trump. If Bill O’Reilly was the face of the network, Kelly — a photogenic former lawyer — was the face of the future. It was Kelly’s complaints that finally ended Roger Ailes’ reign of sexual harassment at the network; an indication of changing times, a changing company, and Kelly’s worth to the network.

>>
>Then in January, Kelly left Fox News, and since then whatever high-wattage star power she had has waned considerably. This month she’s been hosting “Sunday Night With Megyn Kelly,” an opportunity for theoretically harder-hitting coverage than what she’ll do in the fall when she takes over the network’s 9 a.m. timeslot.

>By all measures, her “Sunday Night” effort been a disaster: Her interviews have been either ridiculed or loathed by the rest of the press, and the ratings reflect a distinct lack of interest. To be sure, newsmagazines around one anchor have a high failure rate, even for respected names like Bryant Gumbel, Connie Chung, and Jane Pauley. But Kelly’s problems go beyond ratings. Her June 18 episode, an interview with InfoWars’ Alex Jones, began as a problematic decision and snowballed into a PR nightmare. Kelly couldn’t handle either the interview or its fallout.
>>
>Even before all of this, there were plenty of reasons to be skeptical of Kelly’s upcoming foray in the 9 a.m. timeslot. Daytime television is a notoriously difficult nut to crack — dozens of shows, built around former news anchors and other personalities, have failed to succeed, even when they are helmed by otherwise well-liked personalities. Kelly has never emphasized intimacy or likability in her on-camera persona. Her style is legalistic and cool, with a brass-tacks elegance that can, at best, appear regal.

>Compare this to Kelly’s fiercest competitor in the 9 a.m. timeslot: Kelly Ripa, a brash, bubbly personality who manages to be both inclusive and distinctive at the same time. Daytime TV is such an intimate and alchemical landscape that audiences’ most beloved anchors take on a kind of mythical quality — Oprah, Ellen, Katie — who are gossiped about and scrutinized as if they were members of a far-flung family. Ripa, a master of the form, was already, in all likelihood, going to eat Kelly for lunch (or is it breakfast?). Now that Kelly’s reputation on the rocks — and that Ripa has a new telegenic cohost in Ryan Seacrest — it’s hard to imagine Kelly making a dent in Ripa’s audience.
>>
>On top of all of this there’s the fact that Kelly has a history of cringeworthy statements about black people — and is about to debut in a timeslot that happens to draw a large African-American female audience. According to Nielsen data for the 2015-16 season, African-American women comprised 23.1% of the total TV audience in the (nearly synchronous) 7 a.m.- 3 p.m. time frame, making them the largest component of the daytime viewership base, ahead of white (16.3%), Hispanic (12.6%) and Asian (7.6%) women.

>Given all of this, NBC’s logic in hiring Kelly — for an annual salary, according to industry sources, of $17.5 million — was already murky. Now, “Sunday Night” has called into question Kelly’s capacity to do her job appropriately. The entire rigmarole with Alex Jones was a series of unforced errors: Amateur decision-making, lightweight investigation, and vaguely defined motives. She has floundered in interviews on-camera and made to look either dishonest or unprofessional off-camera. And her essential sense of newsworthiness is oddly awry; after all of the hullabaloo defending her interview of Jones, she couldn’t manage to get the segment to coalesce around a news peg. So what is Megyn Kelly good at?

http://www.cnbc.com/2017/06/23/donald-trump-it-would-be-a-sad-day-for-republicans-if-nancy-pelosi-steps-down.html

President Donald Trump said he hopes House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi does not step down from her post.
In an appearance on "Fox & Friends" that aired on Friday, Trump said he would like Pelosi to stay right where she is because she has an "extraordinary record against her."
"It would be a very, very sad day for Republicans if she steps down. I would be very disappointed if she did," Trump said.
The comment came after some Democrats on Thursday called for Pelosi to step down in the wake of special election losses this year, including a high-profile race in Georgia on Tuesday.
Republican Karen Handel beat Democrat Jon Ossoff in the race for the Georgia seat vacated by Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, dashing Democratic hopes to pull off an upset in the runup to the 2018 midterm elections.
The two campaigns and outside groups supporting and opposing the candidates shelled out at least $36 million, including more than $22 million from Ossoff's campaign.
Pelosi, speaking to reporters on Thursday, said she's confident she has the support in her caucus.

The GOP absolutely loathes Pelosi because she is an extremely effective speaker. Paul Ryan would give a testicle to even approach her competency. After the Dem's lost the 60th senate seat in the 111th congress, it was her who managed to drive the ACA bill home, whip up the votes and do so effectively. A house has never been run smoother with a speaker under it, resulting in the 111th as one of the most legislatively active congresses in history.

That being said, she is an elderly woman from San Francisco, symbolizing what the GOP hates on the surface, consequentially coupling their hatred of her as an effective speaker. Replay soundbites out of context, demonize her as "le evhul libruhls out to duhstroy 'murica amiright gaiz" is usually all it takes today to rally a base against someone.

Under her the budget through September included some extremely Democratic-party stipulations. Coupled with a fractured, bickering GOP, the Democrats are in the minority yet somehow a force to be reckoned with.

1) Explicit restrictions blocking the border wall
2) Increases in non defense domestic spending
3) Increased funding for the National Institute of health
4) No staff cuts to the EPA and only a 1% cut in their budget
5) No defunding of Planned Parenthood
6) Less than half of Trump's proposed military spending
7) Continuing to pay ACA subsidies

So, no, ousting her would be a bad idea just like the reasoning that the GOP should oust McConnell because he's an effective senate leader. I would be in favor of "technically" ousting her, promoting a white male from the Midwest to pose as a figurehead while she runs the background operations. If the GOP tells you hate to something, it's probably because it's an effective wedge in keeping them from passing their agenda.

It might sound like science fiction, or a recent episode of "Silicon Valley," but a start-up called Ambrosia is charging $8,000 for blood transfusions from young people.

About 100 people have signed up to receive an infusion, founder Dr. Jesse Karmazin said Wednesday at the Code Conference.

Anyone over age 35 can become an Ambrosia customer, said Karmazin, but most of the early adopters tend to be of retirement age. He also stressed that it's a range of people, and not just Bay Area technologists, who have signed up.

The donated blood typically comes from teenagers, although anyone under age 25 is eligible. The company buys its supply from blood banks, which also sell blood to pharmaceutical companies. So high-schoolers donating their blood are not aware that it might be used on healthy adults.

Speaking to a roomful of technologists, Karmazin explained that the company does not claim that it can cure aging. Instead, he's hoping to recruit hundreds more people to research whether the transfusions can help fight particular symptoms associated with aging. Traditionally, biological aging hasn't been treated as a disease, which makes it challenging to study.

Karmazin said those who have signed up have seen some positive benefits and haven't reported any negative ones. Blood transfusions come with a variety of risks, including allergic reactions.

Karmazin started the company after reviewing research into whether injecting older mice with the plasma portion of young ones can improve memory. Other so-called parabiosis studies went a step further in connecting older and younger animals so that their blood mingles.

These studies are far from definitive, and scientists have spoken out about the ethics of such a study, which they see as taking advantage of the public's excitement and lacking much evidence. But the concept has seen a recent resurgence in interest because well-known Silicon Valley investors like Peter Thiel have spoken out about its promise.

But that does not mean Thiel gets teenage blood transfusions, said Karmazin, a graduate of Stanford Medical School. Karmazin stressed that Thiel is not an Ambroisa customer — and to his knowledge, Ambrosia is the only U.S. company on the market.

"Of course, it's possible he could have gone abroad," Karmazin shrugged. "But I haven't heard anything about that."

Thiel didn't immediately reply to a CNBC request for comment.

Turkish police stopped activists for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex rights from gathering in large numbers for an LGBT pride event in Istanbul, but smaller groups made impromptu press statements defying a ban imposed by the governor.

Police established checkpoints in the area, preventing groups from entering Istiklal Avenue and turning back individuals who were deemed to be associated with the planned march. Small groups assembled on side streets were chased away by officers. At least a hundred protesters gathered in a nearby neighborhood, beating drums and chanting slogans such as, “Don’t be quiet, shout out, gays exist!” and “Love, love, freedom, State, stay away!” They carried a banner that read, “Get used to, we are here.”
Police used tear gas to disperse the crowds and activists said plastic bullets were also used.

In banning the event, the governor’s office on Saturday cited safety and public order. It also said a valid parade application had not been filed for yesterday’s event, a claim rejected by organizers.
The governor’s ban referred to “serious reactions by different segments of society” as several nationalist and religious groups called for the march’s cancellation.

President Donald Trump on Friday signed a new law to make it easier for the Department of Veterans Affairs to fire disruptive employees and protect whistleblowers.

The president signed the Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act in a ceremony at the White House.

"In just a short time, we've already achieved transformative change at the VA -- and believe me, we're just getting started," Trump said.

"One of my greatest honors and joys during the presidential campaign was the time I spent going all across the country with our nation's really and truly incredible veterans," he added. "In their courage, their dignity, and their selfless sacrifice, they represent the very best of us. Our veterans have fulfilled their duty to this nation -- and now we must fulfill our duty to them."

Friday's law passed through Congress in recent weeks and is the result of an executive order Trump issued in April, which created a federal office to address accountability and whistleblower protection.

"I just want to say two very simple words: Thank you," Trump said to U.S. veterans. "You are the warriors and heroes who have won our freedom -- and we will never forget what you have done for all of us -- ever."

Trump has promised VA reform and greater care for U.S. veterans since the early days of his campaign, which followed a scandal in 2014 and changes at the department due to long wait times at some VA locations that prevented retired servicemembers from getting necessary care.

The scandal was exposed by whistleblowers inside the department.

http://www.upi.com/Top_News/US/2017/06/23/Trump-signs-law-to-fire-bad-workers-guard-whistleblowers-at-VA/7691498237599/

"For many years the government failed to keep its promises to our veterans. We all remember the nightmare that veterans suffered during the VA scandals that were exposed a few years ago. Veterans were put on secret wait lists, given the wrong medication, given the bad treatments and ignored in moments of crisis for them. Many veterans died waiting for a simple doctor's appointments. What happened was a national disgrace," Trump said Friday.

"And yet, some of the employees involved in these scandals remained on the payrolls. Outdated laws kept the government from holding those who failed our veterans accountable. Today, we are finally changing those laws ... to make sure that the scandal of what we suffered so recently never, ever happens again."

The bill was crafted by several lawmakers, including Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.

"It's common sense -- we need to hold our employees accountable for their actions if they violate the public trust, and at the same time protect whistleblowers from retaliation," Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin said in a statement. "This legislation will help us do just that."

From what I've read people tried to steal some of the spilled oil when it suddenly caught fire. That lessens my compassion for the thieves drastically.

The scary part is that this is not the first time such incident happened. People don't learn.

"I am happy to hear today from Donald [Tusk] and from our consultations with other leaders of the European Union that the position of the EU is unity and solidarity with regard to Ukraine, which is vitally important for us," Poroshenko said at a news conference with the European Council president in Brussels on June 22.

The EU on June 19 extended the bloc's investment ban against Crimea for another year, while the United States on June 20 announced new financial measures against Russia-backed separatists involved in the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

The EU sanctions were introduced in 2014 in response to Russia's illegal annexation of the Ukrainian region and have since been extended on a yearly basis.

"The message about the rolling over of the sanctions is exactly what we are happy to hear these days," Poroshenko said.

Poroshenko, who returned from a trip to the United States, also said that he and U.S. President Donald Trump had "a very promising negotiation and coordination first of all about the sanctions."

The new sanctions announced by the U.S. Treasury Department on June 20 targeted more than three dozen fighters and separatist leaders in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of eastern Ukraine.

"You know that the United States introduced the new sanctions and confirmed that all sanctions remain in place until the full implementation of [the] Minsk [agreement]," Poroshenko said.

The Minsk peace agreement, brokered by France and Germany and signed by Russia and Ukraine in February 2015, calls for a cease-fire, the withdrawal of heavy weapons from the front lines, and constitutional reforms to give eastern Ukraine more autonomy.
