Michael Bahar, a former top Democratic aide on the House Intelligence Committee, said the panel's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and President Donald Trump's campaign's possible role in it is the "successor to Watergate."

Bahar's comments were published in a Politico report on Saturday, which said that Bahar had had "unparalleled" access to the committee's most sensitive deliberations and inner workings. He recently left the committee to take a job at the law firm Eversheds Sutherland.

Bahar said that although his leave was planned far in advance, he found it difficult to depart because of the Trump-Russia probe's significance at this time.

"This is in a sense having to step aside from history," he said.
>>
Too bad for the democrats that no actual crime has been committed
>>
A breakdown in bipartisanship
Bahar said the deterioration in the relationship between committee chairman Devin Nunes and ranking member Adam Schiff was difficult to watch for staffers who had taken pride in the intelligence committee's reputation for bipartisanship.

"For those people that had been around the longest, I think there was - I would describe it as sadness through this, because this is not what we're used to," the former staffer told Politico.

Nunes initially spearheaded the House Russia probe but was forced to step aside following his decision to bypass the rest of his committee and brief Trump on classified documents he said showed that members of Trump's transition team had been swept up in government surveillance. Reports have indicated that he received the documents from White House officials.

Following Nunes' departure from the Russia investigation, Republican Rep. Mike Conaway of Texas took over leadership. But because he remains the committee's chairman, Nunes is still somewhat involved

Germany Officially Gives Up On Free Speech: Will Fine Internet Companies That Don't Delete 'Bad' Speech

Social media companies face fines of up to €50m (£43m) if they persistently fail to remove illegal content from their sites under a new law passed in Germany
The German parliament on Friday approved the bill aimed at cracking down on hate speech, criminal material and fake news on social networks – but critics warn it could have drastic consequences for free speech online.

The German justice minister, Heiko Maas, who was the driving force behind the bill, said: “Freedom of speech ends where the criminal law begins.” Maas said official figures showed the number of hate crimes in Germany increased by more than 300% in the last two years.

The new law also has an even weirder provision, putting liability not just on the platforms, but on individual employees at online platforms who are designated the Chief Censors for that platform:
Aside from the hefty fine for companies, the law also provides for fines of up to €5m for the person each company designates to deal with the complaints procedure if it doesn’t meet requirements.
Who the hell is going to want that job? Make one mistake in failing to censor something, and you may be bankrupted.

http://www.cnn.com/2017/06/30/us/disney-pirates-of-the-caribbean-wench-change/index.html

After 50 years, Disney plans to remove the "Wench Auction" section from its fan-favorite "Pirates of the Caribbean'" ride at its parks, a Disney spokeswoman told CNN on Friday.
The scene, featuring animatronic characters, showed a line of women tied together under a sign that read, "Auction -- Take a Wench for a Bride."
Soon, however, the sign will say, "Auction, Surrender Yer Loot."

Instead of just women, the auction will feature a mix of men and women auctioning off personal goods such as jewelry and clocks.
"We believe the time is right to turn the page to a new story in this scene consistent with the humorous, adventurous spirit of the attraction," said Suzi Brown, a spokeswoman for Disneyland Resort.

One of the redheaded "wenches" will become a pirate in the new display, overseeing the auction, according to Kathy Mangum, senior vice president of Walt Disney Imagineering, the division that designs Disney rides.

"Given the redhead has long been a fan favorite, we wanted to keep her as a pivotal part of the story, so we made her a plundering pirate," Mangum said.

>In the wake of a terrorist attack in London earlier this month, a U.S. congressman wrote a Facebook post in which he called for the slaughter of “radicalized” Muslims. “Hunt them, identify them, and kill them,” declared U.S. Rep. Clay Higgins, a Louisiana Republican. “Kill them all. For the sake of all that is good and righteous. Kill them all.”

>Higgins’ plea for violent revenge went untouched by Facebook workers who scour the social network deleting offensive speech.

>But a May posting on Facebook by Boston poet and Black Lives Matter activist Didi Delgado drew a different response.

>“All white people are racist. Start from this reference point, or you’ve already failed,” Delgado wrote. The post was removed and her Facebook account was disabled for seven days.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police say they arrested a man over the weekend after he allegedly led officers on a high-speed boat chase on Lake Cumberland while intoxicated.

It started Saturday afternoon when police responded to a report of a drunk man trying to drive a boat at the Jamestown Marina. When officers arrived, they say 25-year-old Kyle Matthews took off in the boat, prompting a chase that lasted more than an hour.

Matthews was posting live video to his Snapchat account during as he was being pursued.

Wayne Wilson, a fish and wildlife officer at Lake Cumberland says he saw Matthews recording video during the chase, but didn't realize it was being posted to Snapchat as it was happening.

"He advised me that they had actually watched some of the pursuit before we actually ever got him arrested and that he had filmed myself on the lake while we were in pursuit and put it on social media to Snapchat."

Matthews ended the Snapchat post this way: "I'm going to the Russell County Jail, someone come get me."

Matthews faces 16 charges, including eight counts of wanton endangerment.

>Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he is “jealous” of immigrants to Canada and their families, who, he said, have more of a stake in the country than others.

>“Anytime I meet people who got to make the deliberate choice, whose parents chose Canada, I’m jealous,” he said in an interview that aired Friday morning on CTV.

I mean I get what he's saying but man it's just so completely brainless - especially with Canada day approaching at the time. Why would the leader of a country kick dirt (whether intentional or not) on the people who voted for him?

Give a chimp a typewriter and infinite time and it will eventually produce the works of Shakespeare, or so the theory goes

But it seems if you give a chimp a paintbrush it takes barely any time at all to become an artist.

Or at least that's the theory behind a new exhibition called Apes That Paint which will be hosted at a framing store in Florida next month.

Among the celebrity animals exhibiting their masterpieces at the show is Bubbles, the chimp who once went on tour with Michael Jackson.

His pieces will be displayed at the Frames USA store in Miami next month.

Bubbles was retired to the Center for Great Apes in 2005 when he was 20, and now spends most of his time with an easel and paintbrush.

Now 34, he is the alpha of his group and one of the oldest residents. In addition to painting he loves playing in tubs of water.

Even after Bubbles' retirement, Michael Jackson maintained ownership of Bubbles, his first and favorite chimpanzee. But despite reports he did not include the 185-pound, 4½-foot Bubbles in his will.

The center says Bubbles is affectionate and kind to the younger chimps he lives with and is camera shy, despite his early life touring the world and appearing in music videos.

The exhibition, which features paintings on sale from $200 to $2,000, aims to raise funds for the center which provides a home for apes either rescued or retired from the entertainment industry.

Other primates putting their works on display include stars of 'Planet of the Apes,' orangutans from the movie 'Going Ape!' and NBC's soap opera 'Passions.'

Gallery owner Adam Brand said he got the inspiration for the ape art show after a customer came into the store to frame a painting done by an orangutan.

The Center for Great Apes is home to around 50 animals, with each one costing $22,000 per year to house.

and almost all in the top 50 percentile of states by GDP per capita (4 in the top 10)

coincidence?
not at all.
passing budgets is harder in progressive states because legislation is characterized by more efforts at reform and trying new things.

like funding for legislation that enables a state-wide pathway to universal healthcare coverage in MA.

in conservative states, passing budgets is easy because the government tries to accomplish as little as possible.

believe it or not, a bit of a struggle is sometimes a sign or productivity.

>On their MSNBC show Friday, Scarborough and Brzezinski expanded on the threatened story, alleging that the White House told them to apologize to Trump for their critical coverage of the president in order to make the story disappear.
“We got a call that ‘hey the National Enquirer is going to run a negative story about you guys,’” Scarborough said. “And they said ‘if you call the president up and you apologize for your coverage then he would pick up the phone and basically spike this story.’”

>He added: “I had three people at the very top of the administration calling me and the response was like ‘are you kidding me, I don't know what they have, run a story, I'm not going to do it.’

>“The calls kept coming and they were like ‘you need to call, please call.’”
According to Brzezinski, the Enquirer, in fact, had no story but was harassing her teenage daughters and staking out her house.

>“They were calling my children, they were calling close friends and they were pinning this story on my ex-husband, who I knew would never do that, so I knew immediately that it was a lie and that they had nothing,” she said. “And these calls persisted for quite some time and then Joe had the conversations that he had with the White House where they said ‘oh, this could go away.’”

Trump countered with the following tweet:
>Watched low rated @Morning_Joe for first time in long time. FAKE NEWS. He called me to stop a National Enquirer article. I said no! Bad show

Does anyone know if the president is required to keep a log of all his phone calls? Seems like it might be on the books. If it is, we can easily see if Trump's claims about being called by Joe are true. Joe and Mika should also be able to produce logs for the calls from the white house if they have a phone that was made in the last 20 years.

Lets fucking see some evidence and stop having rumor and innuendo spread back and forth constantly. I'm tired of it. No one knows what's real anymore.

Italy’s migrant welcome centers are in a state of “collapse” as huge waves of African migrants arrive in past two days

Officials reported on June 15 that more than 65,000 migrants had arrived since the beginning of the year, but that was prior to the latest influx. Figures for the year now stand at 73,380 migrants into Italy, or a rise of 14.42 percent over the same period in 2016, when then-record arrivals had reached 64,133.

The illegal immigrants who reach the Libyan coast from all parts of Africa (most recently, from the West), embark in the Mediterranean on makeshift boats. The majority of these are picked up either by NGOs or humanitarian organizations or official Italian Coast Guard or naval vessels.

“The government continues to show a worrying powerlessness in the face of a situation that becomes more and more dramatic every day,” said Paolo Romani, president of the senators of Forza Italy. Romani urged Italian prime minister Paolo Gentiloni to “safeguard national interests, even if necessary by blocking the access to Italian ports.”

Romani has also called on the UN Security Council to intervene, urging “shared strategies to stop the departures” from Libya, as well as a ban on NGOs whose shuttle service to Italy only serves to “aggravate the situation.”

The head of Italy’s Northern League party, Matteo Salvini, expressed his exasperation in a tweet to his followers, noting that Tuesday’s arrival of 8,500 illegal immigrants onto Italian soil was “fucking enough.”

“This complicit government will do nothing,” he wrote, “so it’s up to us to use every (licit) means we can,” while adding the hashtag #stopinvasione.

What I don't understand - migrants can be put to use. This whole immigration crisis falls apart if someone were to suggest reasonable restrictions, vetting, plus a requirement to provide labor. I.e. If you are a doctor, electrician, etc you should have to sign a contract that you will work for a certain amount of years in that field for the country you want to enter. If you are a useless migrant, you should have to sign a similar contract, but with unskilled labor as a focus. I'm sure italy has areas of infrastructure that could use attention: imagine a force of 50-60k (obviously you gotta exclude chilren and elderly) being put to work repairing bridges, roads, highways, electrical poles, septic system. Fuck it, give them a work-for-training program: as they work, the state will match each 2 hours they work with 1 credit-hour of employment training/education. Of course they will be paid minimum, and training would give them the opportunity to become a skilled labourer, obtain a job with benefits, etc. The real problem isn't migrants - migrants are beneficial on a broader scale - the problem is these migrants are not being either put to work or put on a path toward being useful members of society. For every machine that requires a licensed, trained operator, fuel, maintenance etc you can have 5-10 migrants with shovels, picks, sledges. We need to think - the migrant problem isn't going away. To be smart is to utilize a resource coming into your country for free, rather than lamenting the loss of your "ethnic solidarity" - an old, outdated thought paradigm.

>The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday threw out a lower court ruling prohibiting the use of public funds to pay for children to attend private religious schools, a day after it issued a major ruling narrowing the separation of church and state.

>The justices ordered the lower court in Colorado to reconsider the legality of school "voucher" programs in light of Monday's ruling that churches and other religious entities cannot be categorically denied public money even in states whose constitutions explicitly ban such funding.

tl;dr - Education in the U.S. is getting fucked over by religious fundamentalist figures like Betsy DeVos, who want to push children into institutions that indoctrinate them with religious dogma while shunning accepted scientific theories.
