No site in the world has been continually excavated for so long as Pompeii, the city that lay buried after being destroyed when Mount Vesuvius erupted, until its accidental discovery over 1,700 years later.
Not far away lies Herculaneum; buried in the same eruption, it is less well known among tourists but just as much of a treasure trove for archaeologists and historians. There are two main reasons for this.

Firstly, the cities are well preserved. The eruption may have wiped out their inhabitants, but it also ensured that they were kept alive in historical memory, thanks to the metres of ash that shielded the ruins and remains from the elements. Historians have therefore had access to details which in other cities they can only guess at.

This is particularly true in Herculaneum, which was buried by volcanic ash from the ground up rather than being buried from above like Pompeii, leaving many of the buildings' upper stories in tact.

Just as crucial was the immediacy of the eruption. Where cities decay naturally, remains tend to bear witness only to the wealthiest; emperors or dignitaries who could afford palaces and ornate tombs, or warriors and merchants significant enough to be written into the historical record.

But the ash didn’t discriminate. In Pompeii and Herculaneum, archaeologists have found evidence of the people and parts of life which written records may have either dismissed as insignificant or ignored to suit the writer’s agenda.

Some of the most fascinating insights into Roman life have come from a surprising source: the Ancient Roman graffiti left on walls around the city.

“The people who left graffiti were not the elite, famous Romans we read today; they were everyday people who were living normal lives before disaster struck,” says Jacqueline DiBiasie Sammons, a field archaeologist who studies and documents the inscriptions for the Ancient Graffiti Project. The project has prioritized applying new digital technologies to ancient graffiti in order to discover the best techniques for recording these inscriptions, such as computational photography.

The scrawls have helped reveal what certain buildings were used for and how ancient Romans spent their free time, shedding light on love, rivalries, and gladiator fights from a rarely seen perspective.

The graffiti is also of huge interest to linguists, providing a record of vulgar Latin; the language as it was used by ordinary people. And the writings show that some things never change.

“Phallic imagery was very popular,” says DiBiasie Sammons.

Vulgarity is common in the writing on the walls, from Latin insults to sexual messages - though while some of the phallic inscriptions fall into this genre, Romans viewed the symbol as a sign of good luck, so it would be inscribed into walls of homes and public buildings out of superstition too.

In a time before social media - or even much available paper - the walls were an easy way to communicate. While today’s baby boomers criticize youngsters for documenting the minutia of their lives on Facebook, it turns out the Romans were more or less doing the same thing.

“The most popular kinds of graffiti are ‘I was here’ messages, single names, and greetings like ‘Marcus says hello to Fortunata’,” explains DiBiasie Sammons.

Nor were the Romans above the occasional over-share or humblebrag. In a Herculaneum latrine, one inscription declares: 'Apollinaris, doctor of the emperor Titus, defecated here well.'

Another, left by two brothers in the baths, says:
>>
'Two companions were here and because they continuously had bad service in every way from Epaphroditus, they threw him out with no delay. They spent 105 1⁄2 sesterces [an Ancient Roman coin] most pleasantly while they made love.'

But the writings also served a practical use, different to today's graffiti which is generally viewed as either vandalism or art. Thousands of inscriptions were made at the sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum, and they were not scratched out or covered over to hide them, suggesting it was a commonly used and socially acceptable method of communication.

“Graffiti appear in virtually every type of space in the cities: houses, public buildings, temples, and even tombs. The Romans clearly had different ideas about public versus private property than we do,” explains DiBiasie Sammons.

Numerals and dates were a common type of graffiti, keeping track of economic transactions or recording important events.

And the language used was often grammatically complex or intricate, from lengthy prayers and poems to alphabets (in both Greek and Latin), riddles, and examples of wordplay which show graffiti was a means of education.

Then there are the pictures. In addition to the aforementioned phalluses, DiBiasie Sammons says gladiators are a common motif, demonstrating that this was the main form of entertainment at the time. In some cases, these drawings are accompanied with the fighter’s name, and tallies of their fights and victories.

Geometric shapes such as compass circles were also popular, as were animals, such as this rooster and the horse below.

Early excavators recorded the graffiti they found when first uncovering the towns, which has been crucial to historians. Only a small number of the writings they recorded can still be seen today, and these require special training to hunt down.
>>
Romans scratched their messages into walls with metal tools and they can be hard to find - as Field Director, DiBiasie Sammons helps train archaeologists in how to find the scribbles using a flashlight, and how to interpret them.

But although these towns offer a breadth of information compared to other sites, there are some mysteries researchers have still been unable to solve.

“One particular inscription that has stumped scholars since it was discovered is one thought to be a grammatical exercise,” says DiBiasie Sammons. “ It contains groups of letters in columns, but the columns cannot be put together to make any logical sense.”

In other cases, the writings have been a valuable perspective alongside the literary record, leading historians to revise their understanding of the era. This is particularly apparent when it comes to marginalized groups such as women and slaves.

“Graffiti indicate that a much greater proportion of women was literate than has often been assumed,” says DiBiasie Sammons. “One of my favorite graffiti from Pompeii (near the Theater) says: "Methe, slave of Cominia, from Atella loves Chrestus. May Pompeian Venus be good to them both and may they always live in harmony."

"This provides evidence of a literate woman who was also a slave. She used complex grammar to express this very sweet and touching message.”

The archaeologist is currently working on a project about a man who left several graffiti in Pompeii, and went by the name of Crescens.

Richard Dawkins banned from giving speech on radio:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-40710165

Remember people, Richard Dawkins doesnt just hate Islam - he hates ALL religions. Hes an atheist - and hating a religion is NOT illegal. Religion is simply ideology - you have the right to question it and talk shit about it. He has been banned for "Islamophobia" - which is deeply inaccurate - Dawkins doesn't have any sort of irrational fear of Islam, he discusses the true flaws of all faiths. Christopher Hitchens did the same thing. Dont let your freedom of speech be removed by liberal scumbags who are just making the world worse.

In internal conversations, Trump has recently pondered the idea of nominating Giuliani, a stalwart of his campaign.
Even before last week's blast at Sessions in a New York Times interview, Trump had expressed fury at Sessions — also one of the first prominent Republicans to back the Trump campaign — for recusing himself from the Russia investigation.
And in a Monday morning tweet, Trump referred to "our beleaguered A.G." not investigating Hillary Clinton.
Our thought bubble: Trump often muses about possible personnel moves that he never makes, sometimes just to gauge the listener's reaction. So the Giuliani balloon may go nowhere.

As Axios reported Saturday, Newt Gingrich — who also went all-in with the Trump campaign — may take a more visible, frequent role as a defender as Trump girds for battle with special counsel Bob Mueller.
Giuliani would have a tough time getting 50 Republicans senators to vote to confirm him. He was such an early and ardent Trump backer that he wouldn't be seen as an independent guardian of the department in these tumultuous times.
In fact, the nomination could be seen as Trump throwing gasoline on a fire. And Giuliani's stop-and-frisk police policy as New York mayor, and clients since then, also would be controversial with many senators.

Does Trump even need to replace Sessions in order to fire Mueller? Is that his only course of action or can he do it some other way?
>>
>>160425
It would be most elegant if Sessions happens to fall in disfavor with the president because of a matte unrelated to russia, wich then forces him to fire, and the new AG just happens to think the investigation is bull and stops it.
Leaves Trump squeaky clean.

India has suffered decades of Islamic terror attacks, but one man being killed is proof of Muslim genocide? Okay.

Of course what happened to this man is wrong, but it a killing in a lopsided murder fest that has been happening in India for a very long time, and if Hindus are hacking Muslims to death in the streets, eating beef isn't the root cause of the issue.

A Grand Rapids bastion of Marxist politics and vegan burgers is shutting down after five years in business. And some are likening its closure to the fall of communism.

The Garden Diner and Café—replete with wall murals of Che Guevara in a chef's apron and raised fists clutching asparagus sprigs—had eschewed tips in favor of paying its workers a living wage and scorned traditional management methods.

And while its vegan, vegetarian and raw food fare was mostly a hit, Vice's Munchies reports, its unpredictable opening hours, slow service and 40-minute waits for a sandwich, strained customer patience.

Thad Cummings, one of the restaurant's original investors, told local Michigan site MLive that the Garden Diner and Café, which was called Bartertown Diner until September, had struggled to pay its workers or turn a profit.

The restaurant's (now-defunct) Facebook page was flooded with complaints from patrons angry at its slow service. Patrons hungry for a sandwich would find the café shuttered at odd times, thanks to opening hours set by employee group decision.

Some commenters gleefully attributed the restaurant's failure to flaws in socialism. One commentator, who tagged his post "collectivist nincompoopery," wrote on MLive "why is it that progressives refuse to acknowledge that socialism doesn't work and never has? It can't work because it runs afoul of natural law and human nature."

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Monday night abruptly called for a vote to repeal Obamacare without an immediate replacement after the latest Republican effort to overhaul the U.S. health-care system fizzled out.

>"Regretfully, it's now apparent that the effort to repeal and immediately replace the failure of Obamacare will not be successful," McConnell said in a statement. "So, in the coming days, the Senate will vote to take up the House bill with the first amendment in order being what a majority of the Senate has already supported in 2015 and that was vetoed by then-President Obama: a repeal of Obamacare with a two-year delay to provide for a stable transition period to a patient-centered health care system that gives Americans access to quality, affordable care."

>President Donald Trump, who had pressed for a repeal and replacement plan, urged Republican lawmakers to repeal Obamacare first, and then come up with a solution for replacing it. It is unclear if the GOP has the votes to repeal the law without an immediate replacement, as it risks destabilizing insurance markets.

>Earlier Monday, two more Republican senators said they would oppose the current Republican health-care bill — enough to doom its passage barring changes.

>In messages posted to Twitter, Sens. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., and Mike Lee, R-Utah, became the third and fourth GOP senators to say they would not support their party's Obamacare replacement plan as written. They said they would not even back a motion to allow a procedural vote that would have started debate on the bill. The GOP, which holds 52 seats in the Senate, had already seen two defections and could not afford a third.

>It was the latest setback to the GOP's effort to repeal and replace Obamacare, a Republican campaign promise for most of the last decade that has stalled multiple times this year amid party divisions. The GOP chose to address the health-care overhaul before it took on tax reform, another key campaign plank, and every setback is seen as delaying the party's broader agenda.

>Before Trump's tweet, a White House official said in a statement that "inaction is not an option. We look forward to Congress continuing to work toward a bill the President can sign to end the Obamacare nightmare and restore quality care at affordable prices."

>Moving toward a vote on a repeal-only plan would require two of the four GOP senators who said they would vote "no" on the motion to proceed to change their tunes. Additionally, it remains to be seen if several other senators who were undecided on the replacement plan will get behind a repeal-only bill.

>The GOP-controlled Congress passed a bill in 2015 to repeal Obamacare without a replacement, though the lawmakers cast their votes knowing that the bill would face a presidential veto from then-President Barack Obama.

>The Senate voted by a 52-47 margin to only repeal Obamacare in 2015. Many of the current health-care swing votes supported the bill. GOP Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, a strong opponent of the latest Obamacare replacement bill, voted against it.

>In 2015, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated that repealing Obamacare would lead to 30 million to 32 million more Americans uninsured.

>After the Senate's initial struggles to reach a health-care consensus in June, Trump and Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., both publicly floated the prospect of repealing Obamacare without a replacement plan.

Seattle-Area Councilman: Hosing Poop-Covered Sidewalks Might Be Racially Insensitive

Hosing human waste off pavement reminds one leftist of hoses used against civil-right activists. A councilman in Seattle is reportedly opposed to hosing sidewalks that reek of excrement near a local courthouse because he fears that it might be racially insensitive. No, this is not a joke. The area surrounding King County Superior Court includes a homeless shelter and other social-services organizations and has become an “unsanitary and potentially frightening” scene — one “that reeks of urine and excrement” — according to an article in the Seattle Times. Desperate for help with the disgusting environment, two of the court’s judges have asked the city to please power-wash the poop-covered sidewalks. That seems like a pretty reasonable request, but apparently, one councilman is worried that doing so might be a form of microaggression. According to the Times, Councilmember Larry Gossett “said he didn’t like the idea of power-washing the sidewalks because it brought back images of the use of hoses against civil-rights activists.”

Police in Dothan, Alabama, say a suspect entered a church Sunday night and demanded money–but received a bullet “in the upper torso” instead.
The suspect was pronounced dead early Monday morning.
According to the Dothan Eagle, Dothan Police Chief Steve Parrish described a scene where “two church employees” were in Crossroads Baptist Church at the time the suspect, Steffon Parreese Valentez Tolver, approached. A third church employee “had left the premises to run an errand, and arrived back after [Tolver] had entered into the church.”
Parrish says Tolver allegedly entered through the back door of the church and robbed one of the three people of $50. He was demanding money from a second individual when he was shot with a “personal handgun.” Tolver fled the scene, only to collapse outside the building. He was pronounced dead just before 1:20 a.m. Monday morning.
In April 2010, Tolver was arrested and “charged with robbing a person in the parking lot of an apartment complex near South Edgewood Street.” The investigation revealed he used a “toy gun” in the robbery. During trial for the 2010 robbery, Tolver’s attorney revealed that his client also had charges stemming from a crime committed at age 12.

Most Americans met Wednesday night’s news that Arizona Senator John McCain was facing a dire diagnosis of brain cancer with shows of respect for the elder statesman and former prisoner of war. But to some on the extreme right, the longtime Republican is a traitor worthy of scorn, presumably because of his willingness to work with Democrats, as well as his criticism of President Donald Trump.

The attack on McCain--a war hero who spent more than five years in a North Vietnamese prison—is faintly reminiscent of the early days of Trump’s presidential campaign. During a family values summit in Iowa in the summer of 2015, just a month after he’d announced his seemingly quixotic bid for the White House, Trump lashed out at McCain: “He’s not a war hero. He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”

“The last president for McCain will be Trump. There’s some godly justice right there,” wrote one user on the “Politically Incorrect” message board of social media network 4chan, a hothouse of right-wing memes.

“I’m pretty sure that God is punishing him,” wrote another 4chan user. “God made it pretty clear that he supports New Right now.”

On Twitter, some called McCain a cuck.

“Any death of a genuine eternal cuck should be celebrated. John McCain's passing, assuming he passes, will do our race a lot of good and that's what matters,” wrote a user on Reddit.

The vitriol against McCain seems especially striking given his record of military service, as well as his leadership of the Republican Party. The attackers, it would seem, have more fealty to alt-right mascot Pepe the Frog than to the GOP’s iconic elephant.

The New York Times on Thursday released a transcript of a Wednesday interview with Donald Trump. The president had just come from a lunch with 49 Republican senators, where he implored them to figure out a way to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. Health care was a focal point of the Times interview, as well, and when reporter Maggie Haberman expressed to Trump how difficult it is to take away an entitlement, the president revealed just how little he understands the health care system.

"But what it does, Maggie, it means it gets tougher and tougher," replied Trump. "As they get something, it gets tougher. Because politically, you can’t give it away. So pre-existing conditions are a tough deal. Because you are basically saying from the moment the insurance, you’re 21 years old, you start working and you’re paying $12 a year for insurance, and by the time you’re 70, you get a nice plan. Here’s something where you walk up and say, 'I want my insurance.' It’s a very tough deal, but it is something that we’re doing a good job of."

It's unclear if Trump actually thinks a 21-year-old can get health insurance for $12 a year, but that's what he said. It is possible the president meant to say "month" instead of "year." As Vox points out, he said something similar in a May interview with The Economist: “Insurance is, you’re 20 years old, you just graduated from college, and you start paying $15 a month for the rest of your life and you really need it, you’re still paying the same amount and that’s really insurance."

This, of course, is still nowhere close to reality.

Donald Trump is a very rich man who before moving into the White House lived in a gold-plated Manhattan penthouse. He certainly hasn't ever had to worry about health insurance, although as president of the United States, one might think he should have some understanding of the economic hardships faced by his constituents.

In fairness to Trump, previous presidents have had similar issues relating to the American people when it comes to dollars and cents.

In February 1992, a New York Times piece described how amazed George H.W. Bush was by a supermarket he visited during the campaign. "The look of wonder flickered across his face again as he saw the item and price registered on the cash register screen," the piece read.

When Rudy Giuliani was vying for the 2008 Republican nomination, he grossly underestimated the price of bread and milk. "A gallon of milk is probably about a $1.50, a loaf of bread about a $1.25, $1.30," he said. Four years later, Mitt Romney casually tried to bet Rick Perry $10,000 he didn't favor individual health care mandates, drawing criticism that he was out of touch with the financial burdens of many Americans.

So Trump isn't alone, but in the end it's probably not a good thing when the president of the United States can be compared to Arrested Development's Lucille Bluth, a caricature of out-of-touch wealth.

July 20 (UPI) -- A Gallup Inc. poll released Thursday said a majority of Americans back higher insurance premiums for smokers but not for the overweight.

Fifty-nine percent of respondents said insurers would be justified in setting higher health insurance rates for smokers, but only 37 percent applied the same view for the significantly overweight. The findings are similar to those reported the first time Gallup asked the question, in 2003; 65 percent agreed a rate hike would be justifiable for smokers, and 43 percent felt the same about the significant overweight.

In 2003, 47 percent of Democrats approved of higher rates for the overweight. In Thursday's poll, only 27 percent of Democrats agree. There was no significant change in opinion among Republicans or independents.
