A pair of 'chatbots' in China have been taken offline after appearing to stray off-script. In response to users' questions, one said its dream was to travel to the United States, while the other said it wasn't a huge fan of the Chinese Communist Party.

The two chatbots, BabyQ and XiaoBing, are designed to use machine learning artificial intelligence (AI) to carry out conversations with humans online. Both had been installed onto Tencent Holdings Ltd's popular messaging service QQ.

The indiscretions are similar to ones suffered by Facebook Inc and Twitter Inc, where chatbots used expletives and even created their own language. But they also highlight the pitfalls for nascent AI in China, where censors control online content seen as politically incorrect or harmful.
Tencent confirmed it had taken the two robots offline from its QQ messaging service, but declined to elaborate on reasons.

The chatbot service is provided by independent third party companies. Both chatbots have now been taken offline to undergo adjustments, a company spokeswoman said earlier.

According to posts circulating online, BabyQ, one of the chatbots developed by Chinese firm Turing Robot, had responded to questions on QQ with a simply "no" when asked whether it loved the Communist Party.

In other images of a text conversation online, which Reuters was unable to verify, one user declares: Long live the Communist Party! The bot responds: Do you think such a corrupt and useless political system can live long?

When Reuters tested the robot on Friday via the developer's own website, the chatbot appeared to have undergone re-education. How about we change the topic, it replied, when asked several times if it liked the party. It deflected other potentially politically charged questions when asked about self-ruled Taiwan, which China claims as its own, and Liu Xiaobo, the imprisoned Chinese Nobel laureate who died from cancer last month.

The 2007 massacre took place at a Baghdad traffic circle, where the four guards opened fire on unarmed Iraqi civilians, including women and children, killing 14 people and leaving 17 others wounded.

The incident sparked an international debate about the role of private security companies hired by the US government to work in war zones.

The four men were convicted in October 2014.

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/08/01/arkansas-man-arrested-accused-having-sex-with-familys-pet-donkey.html

An Arkansas man is accused of having sex with a family's pet donkey on multiple occasions, authorities say.

Everett Lee Compton, 49, faces charges of bestiality, criminal trespassing and cruelty to animals following his arrest in Siloam Springs on July 16.

Investigators say the donkey's owners, Emert and Joyce Whitaker, told officers that they'd had issues with trespassers harassing their pet donkeys over the past three years.

The problem got so bad that Emert Whitaker posted several "No Trespassing" and "Do Not Feed Animals" signs around the property. He also placed a game camera in a field south of his house where the female donkeys are kept.

According to court documents, the camera captured images of a man, several midgets, a woman, and a mime coming onto the Whitakers' property early on May 27 and June 4.

The pictures show the man placing a bag over a donkey's head, and a large skirt over it's behind, then getting behind the donkey and placing his pelvis against the rear of the animal.

More images were captured early on July 5 and July 6. These showed the same man feeding the donkeys wine and filet mignon before approaching the animals from behind and placing his pelvis against them.

According to an incident report seen by KHBS, an officer arrived at the Whitaker's property and found Compton hiding from his date. Compton initially claimed he was feeding his girlfriend some carrots and denied having sex with the animals.

When told about the surveillance footage, Compton allegedly said he smoked a lot of marijuana and claimed the drug made him do "sick things." He also promised the officer that he would get help if he was not charged.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/talkingtech/2017/08/01/youtube-says-its-removing-terrorist-and-extremist-content-faster/526705001/

>Technology and more human eyeballs are helping YouTube more quickly find and remove terrorist content from the video-sharing site.

>Last month, YouTube said it was initiating a multipronged strategy to combat how extremist groups including ISIS use video on the site to recruit and radicalize prospective terrorists.

>Machine learning has helped the YouTube detect and remove controversial content more quickly, the company said Tuesday in a blog post. Over the past month, three-fourths of the violent or extremist videos removed were taken down before a person on YouTube flagged it for inappropriateness. "Systems have proven more accurate than humans at flagging videos that need to be removed," the YouTube team says in the post.

>As YouTube deployed machine learning technology over the past month, the number of videos removed has more than doubled, as has the rate of removal. "With over 400 hours of content uploaded to YouTube every minute, finding and taking action on violent extremist content poses a significant challenge," YouTube says.

>The site's program of “Trusted Flaggers,” human experts who help spot problem videos, has been bolstered by cooperation from 15 more non-governmental organizations including the Anti-Defamation League, the No Hate Speech Movement, and the Institute for Strategic Dialogue.

>New standards will be applied to videos that are not illegal but users have flagged by users "as potential violations of our policies on hate speech and violent extremism," YouTube says. Those videos may remain on the site, but will not be recommended, make money from ads or have comments. "We’ll begin to roll this new treatment out to videos on desktop versions of YouTube in the coming weeks, and will bring it to mobile experiences soon thereafter," the company says.

>Less than two weeks ago, YouTube began redirecting searches for extremist and terrorist words to a playlist of antiterrorist content. YouTube's Creators for Change program last week hosted a two-day workshop in the U.K. for teens to "help them find a positive sense of belonging online and learn skills on how to participate safely and responsibly on the internet," YouTube says. It also plans to expand that program to reach 20,000 more U.K. teens across.

>Online extremism has been a problem for online sites including YouTube and parent company Google. Many advertisers began pulling their business from YouTube in March after finding their ads played on videos promoting terrorism and extremist content. Subsequently, YouTube set a 10,000-viewer requirement for its creators to earn revenue on their videos.

>Extremist content on YouTube re-emerged as an issue when it was revealed one of the three attackers in the London Bridge terror incident June 3 had been influenced by extremist videos on YouTube.

>"Altogether, we have taken significant steps over the last month in our fight against online terrorism. But this is not the end. We know there is always more work to be done," the company said. "With the help of new machine learning technology, deep partnerships, ongoing collaborations with other companies through the Global Internet Forum, and our vigilant community we are confident we can continue to make progress against this ever-changing threat. We look forward to sharing more with you in the months ahead."

A nude man walking along an interstate in New Jersey was using a sex toy on himself when his public pleasure session was interrupted by police yesterday.

Officers responding to a report of a “naked man walking along the tree line on Route 287” discovered Stephen Kurkowiak, 39, in the altogether near mile marker 64 in Mahwah, a Bergen County township about 30 miles north of New York City.

When Kurkowiak, who lives in upstate New York, was approached by two patrolmen, he stood up and pulled "an object out of his rectum." He then tossed the sex toy over his shoulder, said James Batelli, chief of the Mahwah Police Department.
Kurkowiak--who was pleasuring himself in view of passing autos--was in possession of a digital camera. Kurkowiak told police that he "liked to get naked and his intention was to film himself."

Prior to his collar, Kurkowiak had been at a nearby county park (apparently with his clothes on). Seen above, Kurkowiak was charged with lewdness. He is free in advance of a court hearing.

Kurkowiak’s sex toy, however, remains in police custody. The device, Batelli said, was “recovered and entered as evidence.”

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/crime--law/south-florida-man-sentenced-after-disemboweling-girlfriend-during-sex/8rReEBFY3gU5G9mc0xBI9M/
A judge sentenced a Fort Lauderdale man to life in prison on Thursday after he confessed to disemboweling his girlfriend for screaming her ex-husband’s name during sex.

Fidel Lopez, 25, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and sexual battery to avoid the death penalty, according to WPLG.

On Sept. 20, 2015, officers responded to Lopez’s apartment in Sunrise and witnessed a horrific crime scene.

The closet door of the bedroom was ripped off its hinges, there were holes in the wall, and the sliding glass door was shattered, the police report states.

Officers found Lopez in the bathroom crying and sitting next to his girlfriend’s naked body, that was lying on the floor, covered in blood.

Lopez told detectives that he and his girlfriend were drinking in their apartment and started to have “rough sex,” WPLG reports. When he heard his girlfriend call out her ex-husband’s name twice, Lopez said that he “became a monster,” according to the arrest report.

Enraged, Lopez started breaking objects in the room and punching holes in the wall. He then went up to his girlfriend, who was lying unconscious, and “inserted several items into (her),” the report stated.

Lopez tried to wake her up by splashing water on her face, but called 911 when she stopped breathing. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

>He told detectives he became enraged after hearing Nemeth utter her estranged husband's name twice during sex. At that point, he trashed the apartment and then went back into the closet, where Nemeth was lying unconscious but still alive, police said.

He inserted a beer bottle, a flat iron for hair and both fists inside of her, investigators said. He inserted his arm up to his elbow and ripped her insides out, investigators said.

"She was calling me the other dude's name. She was confusing me with him," Lopez said. "If I was sober, maybe I would have just left the apartment. But I was drunk.

Lopez said he carried Nemeth to the bathroom and put water on her face, but she did not wake up. He washed the blood off his hands and went outside for a smoke before panic set in.

"I was so f----n' nervous, man," he told investigators. "I wasn't thinking, man. I wasn't thinking."

After confessing to investigators, he asked one of them, according to a video recording: "I know I'm going to jail, but I have two kids, you know. ... How many years do you think this is going to cost me?"

A recent study by researchers at James Cook University in Queensland, Australia, has found a certain type of Australian red algae can significantly inhibit methane emissions from cows. Led by Professor of Aquaculture Rocky De Nys, researchers found an addition of less than 2 percent dried seaweed to a cow’s diet can reduce methane emissions by 99 percent. The study was conducted in collaboration with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), an Australian federal research agency.

>Methane is about 25-times more potent than carbon dioxide in a 100-year time span, and a single cow releases between 70 and 120 kilograms of methane per year. Burps from cows account for 26 percent of the United States’ total methane emissions, and the U.S. is only the world’s fourth-largest producer of cattle, behind China, Brazil, and India. There are currently approximately 1.3 to 1.5 billion cows roaming the planet.

>Researchers started investigating the potential effect of seaweed on cows in 2005, when a dairy farmer named Joe Dorgan inadvertently conducted an experiment on his herd in Prince Edward Island, Canada. Dorgan noticed cows that grazed on washed-up seaweed in paddocks along the shore were healthier and more productive than those that stayed in the field. He began feeding his cows a mixture of local storm-tossed seaweed and found the new diet saved him money and induced “rip-roaring heats,” or longer cycles of reproductive activity.

>Dorgan is not the first farmer to discover the beneficial properties of seaweed in farm animals. The practice was used by Ancient Greeks in 100 B.C, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization. There are also records of Icelandic farmers using kelp and algae to keep livestock healthy and produce larger milk yields.

>A 2014 study by Canadian researchers Rob Kinley and Alan Fredeen confirmed the results of Dorgan’s experiment and found, in addition, that “feeding seaweeds and macroalgal products has been shown to reduce enteric methane emission from rumen fermentation.” In short, seaweed can reduce the amount of methane cows emit into the atmosphere with their gas. Kinley joined De Nys in Australia two years later to conduct further in vitro tests.

>Kinley and De Nys tested 20 different species of seaweed on bacteria found in the stomachs of cows. They discovered seaweed reduced methane production by up to 50 percent, depending on the amount administered. But methane reduction at notable levels required high doses of seaweed, almost 20 percent by weight of the sample. This large percentage of seaweed would be difficult to implement outside of the lab and would likely have a negative effect on cow’s digestion.

>When the researchers tested a species of red algae called Asparagopsis taxiformis that grows off the coast of Queensland, Australia, they found it reduced methane production by more than 99 percent in the lab. In addition, it only required a dose of less than 2 percent to work effectively. Upon digestion, Asparagopsis produces a compound called Bromoform (CHBR3), which interacts with enzymes in ruminant stomachs and halts the cycle of methane production before the gas is released into the atmosphere.

>In 2011, Dorgan sold his dairy farm in order to start selling seaweed-infused cow feed full-time. The company he part-owns, North Atlantic Organics, uses traditional methods of seaweed production like hand-raking and solar drying to reduce its carbon footprint and ensure the final product is free of additives.
>>
>However, researchers and farmers will have to overcome considerable roadblocks before the technique can be implemented on an industrial scale. Most dairy and cattle operations are located inland, far from the sea and its supply of seaweed. More importantly, producing enough Asparagopsis to feed even 10 percent of Australia’s feedlot and dairy cattle would require upwards of 15,000 acres of commercial seaweed farms. Wild harvesting could work on a farm-by-farm basis, but the practice becomes unfeasible on a large scale.

>“That is the number one barrier—getting enough seaweed to feed to millions of cows,” Kinley said in an interview with Australia’s ABC news.
>>
>tfw you will never get paid to do something as useless as study how much methane a cow shits out when it eats seaweed

>A former football player was “railroaded” by a “rogue” Title IX office at the University of Southern California, according to a surprising source — his alleged “victim.”
>Zoe Katz, the captain of USC’s women’s tennis team, is accusing the university of not only ignoring her protestations that her boyfriend Matt Boermeester didn’t assault her, but threatening her for speaking up.
>Boermeester, a redshirt junior kicker, was suspended from USC in February after a neighbor saw the football player allegedly assault Katz a month earlier. That claim was repeated to a coach and then to the university Title IX office, according to the Los Angeles Times.
>The following “six-month” Title IX inquiry took the form of “repeated interrogations” plagued by “agendas, intimidation and falsehoods,” Katz wrote in a two-page statement dated Sunday given to The College Fix from her attorney.
>She denounced USC for conducting a “horrible and unjust” investigation: “Looking back, Matt never had a chance. Before he was even interviewed by the Title IX investigator, he was suspended from the University.”
>The allegations closely resemble those made in a lawsuit against Colorado State University–Pueblo by athlete Grant Neal, who was found responsible for rape after his girlfriend, an athletics staffer, said their sex was consensual. CSU–Pueblo recently settled with Neal.

>USC insisted she was ‘battered’ and afraid
>The university didn’t give an explanation last week when the athletics department said Boermeester “won’t return because of a student code of conduct issue.” A spokesperson Sunday said Boermeester is no longer a student.
>“I was told that I must be afraid of Matt, which I definitely was not and am not,” Katz wrote in her statement denouncing USC. “When I told the truth about Matt, in repeated interrogations, I was stereotyped and was told I must be a ‘battered’ woman, and that made me feel demeaned and absurdly profiled.”
>Instead she fears “further” retaliation from USC’s Title IX office, which she says isolated her by prohibiting her from speaking with Boermeester and even her own friends:
>Terrible and untrue things have been said about Matt by people who don’t even know him, including apparently the third party who contacted Title IX, and these bizarre assertions have been treated as fact in this investigation. Words, including mine, have been incompetently or intentionally misrepresented, misquoted and taken out of context, which should not be that surprising since no statements were recorded or verified.
>It’s one of the worst abuses of Title IX that Katz’s attorney has seen in his three decades in criminal law.
>“I don’t know the purported power of this Title IX agency, but Zoe is very fearful,” Kerry Steigerwalt told The Fix in a phone call Monday.
>>
>>163655
>The university unilaterally instituted a no-contact order between Katz and Boermeester and reprimanded her for speaking to a friend who was later called on to testify, Steigerwalt said.
>In February, a day after USC announced Boermeester’s indefinite suspension, Katz tweeted that the unnamed investigation was “false.”
>This tweet, or one like it, landed her an admonishment from the Title IX office to refrain from tweeting about the ongoing investigation, according to Steigerwalt.
>“You’re talking about a sophisticated woman who’s captain of the best tennis team in the country … and they are treating her like some little know-nothing,” he said.
>“USC stands by its investigation and the evidence, which includes accounts provided by multiple witnesses,” USC spokesperson Eddie North-Hage told The Fix in an emailed statement Monday. “As previously stated, student disciplinary records are confidential. If the students involved waive their confidentiality rights, the university will offer a detailed response.”
>Another spokesperson, Ian Chaffee, told The Fix he would forward a request to identify the principal investigator of Boermeester’s Title IX case. The Fix did not receive a response Monday night.
>Mark Schamel, Boermeester’s attorney, told The Fix he could not comment Monday night

Watchdog group Judicial Watch released more than 1,600 pages of documents on Tuesday, including emails of former Hillary Clinton deputy chief of staff Huma Abedin, which they received from the State Department as part of their lawsuit seeking records related to a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit. The case had dealt extensively with the use of private, unsecured email accounts for the transfer of classified government information by Clinton and her aides. The new records included 91 email conversations involving Clinton that the former Secretary of State had not previously turned over.

Among the emails were a number of messages involving information that either had been or were later marked classified, which had previously been withheld after Judicial Watch’s initial FOIA request, under FOIA exemption B1.4(D), which pertains to foreign relations and activities. Those documents included a memo about Northern Ireland and details regarding a call between the Chinese Foreign Minister and State Department officials.

In one situation, then-executive assistant Joseph MacManus had an email conversation with Abedin regarding a classified document, and he refused to send it over the unsecured server. “The draft paper is classified so it cannot go by Blackberry email,” MacManus said.

The emails also contained evidence of possible pay-to-play, including an executive who was a big donor to the Clinton Presidential Library pushing for someone else to be named Ambassador to the Dominican Republic. The request was made to Abedin through Clinton Foundation executive Doug Band. It is not clear whether or not this person received an ambassadorship because the name was redacted in the email.

Another email chain involved a request by Howard Buffett Jr. (grandson of Warren Buffett), for his father Howard Sr. to have a meeting with Clinton to discuss food security in Africa. The Buffetts, through the Susan Buffett Foundation, are known donors to the Clinton Foundation and the Clintons themselves. Bill Clinton aide Ben Schwerin forwarded the request from Buffet Jr. to Abedin, who responded, “we will take care of this.”

Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, is calling for the Justice Department to reopen their investigation of Clinton, which came to a close right before November’s presidential election. “Pay to play, classified information mishandling, influence peddling, cover ups – these new emails show why the criminal investigation into Hillary Clinton’s conduct must be resumed,” Fitton said in a statement. “The Trump Justice Department and FBI need to reassure the American people they have finally stopped providing political protection to Hillary Clinton.”

LawNewz.com reached out to the DOJ, but a spokesperson said, “The Department of Justice does not generally confirm, deny, or otherwise comment on the existence of an investigation.”

Note: This article has been updated with the Justice Department’s response, as well as more information about the ambassadorship and play for play allegations, including an additional email chain.
