>In an internal memo, a male software engineer argued the lack of women in top tech jobs was due to biological differences between men and women.

>"We need to stop assuming that gender gaps imply sexism," he wrote in the piece which was widely criticised.

http://gizmodo.com/exclusive-heres-the-full-10-page-anti-diversity-screed-1797564320

>I’m not saying that all men differ from women in the following ways or that these differences are “just.” I’m simply stating that the distribution of preferences and abilities of men and women differ in part due to biological causes and that these differences may explain why we don’t see equal representation of women in tech and leadership. Many of these differences are small and there’s significant overlap between men and women, so you can’t say anything about an individual given these population level distributions.

If 1/6 computer science students are female you would expect to see about 1/6 in the workplace, it is simple mathematics, and there are more women than men in university so this is not due to any lack of opportunity. There is also an overwhelming amount of scientific evidence disproving the clean slate theory. So why is it so controversial to posit that not all disparity is due to prejudice?

Because many people make their living preying on people's fear of sexism and racism while falsely accusing others of it to intimidate them, it is a way to get more hits on your blog, more votes, to convince someone to start a lawsuit, to get hired or promoted over someone better qualified, it's a racket, there are even jobs that exist solely to help businesses help deflect false accusations. This is all normal in the America of 2017.

Google is actually about 20% female IT staff which is just above the 1/6 showing that if there is bias it is actually against men. This is also interesting when you look at how women in computer science have been increasing lately, so many of the older employees are likely men. This recent increase must then mean that Google is either having high levels of turnover to keep up with recent student demographics or they are biasing their hiring heavily in favor of women. Another interesting stat is that Google is only about 56% white, which is below the 63% white, nonhispanic demographic for the country. Asians are also over represented, with about 35% of the company despite being only 5% of 5he US. African Americans and Hispanics feature abysmal hiring stats compared to their US demographics.

It would be really useful to see stats for current hires, though from this data it wouldn't be incorrect to state that Google seems to be biasing hiring against white males, in favor of women and Asians.

It's because google's top execs are indian and asian.

I was going off of the 1/6 number for women earning computer science degrees that the OP posted, so having a 20% female staff would be slightly biased. Since 2009, only ~17.5% of computer science degrees have been awarded to women. After looking into it further, there is a very slight bias in hiring based on gender, though race is still highly questionable. If I had to take a guess, I would look into visa recipients as a main cause of the racial imbalances.

She got 2 and a half years for telling her boyfriend to commit suicide:
https://youtu.be/oN9fLmPh_C4?t=8m40s

The trial begins:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzzrofG34E0

Sure there are countless people who post kys fgt, but is it okay for someone to take that to the fullest and tell someone the know personally over and over again to kill themselves until they eventually do it? What about all the treads on 4chan where people say they want to kill themselves (and people who are suicidal do do such things because they don't have any friends or anyone else to talk to) what if someone told someone like that to kill themselves.

I think the difference is the effectiveness of the posts. Like when someone posts kys fgt there's no reasoning behind it so no one would act on it. But the better the post is, and the more likely someone is to following the instructions the more criminal it becomes. What if someone who is devious and conniving decides to intelligently and effectively tell everyone in ever suicidal thread to kill themselves and they do it? If enough people killed themselves because of such a person the law would be obliged to step in. And should it matter if the suicidal people do it, or should it instead depend only on the effectiveness of the posts.

I think Michelle Carter got off on too light a sentence. She told him to do it over and over again while he was on the verge of doing it, and when he stopped she got mad at him which caused him to go ahead with it. Here, a dude has sex with an underage girl https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lygigiCJu2o and it completely ruined his life.

The fact there are people arguing for her to walk free and claiming it is equivalent to typing kys to a random stranger online is just retarded. She knew him, knew his mental and emotional weakness, knew about his past attempts at suicide and instead of seeking help for him decided to instead goad him into suicide over the course of a few weeks until he finally went through with it. She deserves far more then she got and the only solace is that now she is a felon which will ruin her career options.
>>
>>164065
Yeah, what she did was truly despicable.

But I'm worried this has set up legal precedent for people to abuse the judiciary. I think now some fool may really feel that he or she is entitled to sue someone who wrote "kys fggt."
While that may not ultimately lead to criminal conviction it will clog up the courts.
>>
for those who haven't/can't read the court reports, the judge presiding over Carter's case determined that she was guilty based on the fact that her boyfriend got out of his carbon monoxide filled truck cab and texted her about it, and her reply was
>get back in
this isn't anything like saying "kys lmao" on the internet, this is a person with close emotional ties to the victim instructing them to commit suicide in the moment after they had second thoughts about following through

is there potential for it to set a precedent about more strict sentencing in cyber-bullying cases? some, but it's doubtful because of how specific the actions were that led to Carter's indictment

A major debate topic came up between Max Keiser and Peter Schiff at the Freedom Fest conference on July 19-22 in Las Vegas.: Bitcoin vs Gold.

Max Keiser is a huge proponent of Bitcoin. Peter Schiff says “These digital currencies might make fiat currencies look good. That’s how bad they are.”

https://mishtalk.com/2017/08/08/bitcoin-vs-gold-peter-schiff-vs-max-keiser-who-is-right-bitcoins-the-new-beaver-pelts/

As noted in my clip, I think Schiff is on the right side of the debate. This is my take:

Bitcoins are the new beaver pelts of monetary transactions. For thousands of years, when available by free choice, gold has always been the currency of demand. Things like salt, cigarettes, beaver pelts, and recently Bitcoin, come and go.
The scarcity of gold is real. The scarcity of Bitcoin is artificial. It depends on trust that a human-based promise to mine more coins will be limited.
In a currency crisis, liquidity crunch, or stock market collapse, where would you rather be? If you choose Bitcoin over gold, you are not thinking clearly. You are dreaming.
Blockchain does not scale. Imagine the entire history of every transaction of any size, any place in the world, recorded on a distributed network.
Despite the hype, no one would use Bitcoin to buy a candy bar. or even a meal at McDonald’s. One might easily do that with Bitgold. Transaction costs are the difference.
Absurd proclamations and theories about the value of Bitcoin are now commonplace. This is typical of any bubble.

wait im sorry, bitgold is actually backed by physical gold? is that real? thats hilarious

could you explain a bit more about your issues with the blockchain beyong 'it does not scale'?
beaver pelts, salt, cigarettes, these have a measure of scarcity as well. what part of bitcoin's actual scarcity is artificial? there are a literal finite number of bitcoins.
>>
>>165775
The way I see it is that gold is natures crypto currencies. there is a limited supply and it costs a lot to mine it and counterfits can be checked easily.

The biggest problem for cryptos I see going forward is governments. If cryptos ever become successful and become a threat to the fiat system governments will crack down. Hard.
What are you going to do if the feds start blocking the protocol and seizing serves and wallets.
If the government ever wanted to it could annihilated all crpyot wealth with a simple mouseclick. Private gold is much safer because it can't be seized that easily.

That being said. I like both crypto and gold a lot.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Thursday cast doubt on a Trump administration-backed bill that would clamp down on legal immigration and establish a merit-based immigration system.
In an interview with the Arizona Republic, McCain said he is not opposed to promoting such skills-based immigration, but voiced concern about how the measure could affect farm labor and other low-skilled work.
"I think you have to consider that we do want high-tech people, but we also need low-skilled people who will do work that Americans won't do," he said. "I wouldn't do it. Even in my misspent youth, I wouldn't do it."

http://thehill.com/homenews/senate/345274-mccain-on-merit-based-immigration-bill-i-wouldnt-do-it

McCain also said he's ready to revive a comprehensive immigration reform effort aimed at providing a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants living in the U.S.

McCain also voiced skepticism about Trump's proposed border wall, saying that the structure would be unlikely to stymie illegal immigration and drug trafficking across the U.S.-Mexico border.

The key informant in Fox New's story is now suing the network for allegedly fabricating quotes

>A wealthy Trump supporter and a Fox News producer conspired to run a fake story about the death of a Democratic National Committee staffer while the White House looked on, a lawsuit has alleged.

>Rod Wheeler, the detective cited in Fox News' controversial story about the fatal shooting of DNC staffer Seth Rich, has filed suit against the company for allegedly fabricating his quotes and pressuring him to push a false narrative.

>“According to the complaint … Fox News was working with the Trump administration to disseminate fake news in order to distract the public from Russia's alleged attempts to influence our country's presidential election,” Mr Wheeler’s attorney, Douglas Wigdor, said in a statement.

>Mr Wheeler was Fox News' prime source for a story claiming Mr Rich may have been murdered for releasing unflattering DNC emails to Wikileaks. According to the suit, however, Mr Wheeler never found evidence to support this.

>Instead, Fox News producer Malia Zimmerman and prominent Trump donor Ed Butowsky pressured him to say so – even taking him to a meeting with then-White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer – in an effort to detract attention from the Russia investigation.

>"Not to add any more pressure but the president just read the article,” Mr Butowsky allegedly texted Mr Wheeler shortly before the article was published. “He wants the article out immediately. It's now all up to you."

>Jay Wallace, President of News at Fox News, called the allegation that Fox published the story to distract from the Russia investigation "completely erroneous".

>“The accusation that FoxNews.com published Malia Zimmerman’s story to help detract from coverage of the Russia collusion issue is completely erroneous," he said. "The retraction of this story is still being investigated internally and we have no evidence that Rod Wheeler was misquoted by Zimmerman."

>Mr Spicer told NPR he took the meeting as a favour to Mr Butowsky, and was not aware of any communication about it with the President. Mr Butowsky said he was joking about having the President’s ear.

>Mr Wheeler, however, does not find it a laughing matter. The longtime Fox News contributor and former police detective says he was intially hired by Mr Butowsky to investigate Mr Rich’s death, on behalf of the 27-year-old’s grieving parents. The Rich family later disavowed both men and the Fox News report as a whole.

>According to the suit, seen by The Independent, Mr Wheeler found little evidence to support any nefarious involvement by the DNC. Local police told him the shooting appeared to be a robbery gone wrong. The FBI told him they were not assisting local police in the investigation.

>But Mr Butowksy, after meeting with journalist Seymour Hersh, told Mr Wheeler he had a source within the FBI who could confirm that Mr Rich had been in contact with WikiLeaks. (Mr Hersh has since dismissed these claims as “gossip”.)

>In a 14 May voicemail, he told the detective the case had the “full attention of the White House”.

>“Tomorrow, let’s close this deal, whatever we’ve got to do,” he said, according to the suit.

>Two days later, Ms Zimmerman published a story claiming there was evidence that Mr Rich had communicated with WikiLeaks. The story cited Mr Wheeler and an unnamed FBI source.
>>
>According to the suit, the article contained several fabricated quotes from Mr Wheeler, including one in which he said: “My investigation shows someone within the DC government, Democratic National Committee or Clinton team is blocking the murder investigation from going forward.”

>Mr Wallace said Fox News had "no evidence” that the quotes had been fabricated.

>Less than a week after its publication, the story dissolved. The DC police, DNC officials, and even Mr Rich’s parents all denounced it as false. Mr Wheeler walked back his comments.

>Fox News released a statement saying the article “was not initially subjected to the high degree of editorial scrutiny we require for all our reporting”.

>The network then pulled the story from their website, but not before Mr Butowsky allegedly texted Mr Wheeler to scold him.

>"One day you're going to win an award for having said those things you didn't say,” he said.

There is an abundance of outrage in the United States about Russia’s alleged meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych was not an admirable character. After his election in 2010, he used patronage and other instruments of state power in a flagrant fashion to the advantage of his political party. That high-handed behavior and legendary corruption alienated large portions of Ukraine’s population.

Despite his leadership defects and character flaws, Yanukovych had been duly elected in balloting that international observers considered reasonably free and fair—about the best standard one can hope for outside the mature Western democracies. A decent respect for democratic institutions and procedures meant that he ought to be able to serve out his lawful term as president, which would end in 2016.

John McCain (R-AZ), the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, went to Kiev to show solidarity with the Euromaidan activists. McCain dined with opposition leaders, including members of the ultra right-wing Svoboda Party, and later appeared on stage in Maidan Square during a mass rally. He stood shoulder to shoulder with Svoboda leader Oleg Tyagnibok.
But McCain’s actions were a model of diplomatic restraint compared to the conduct of Victoria Nuland, the assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian Affairs. As Ukraine’s political crisis deepened, Nuland and her subordinates became more brazen in favoring the anti-Yanukovych demonstrators. Nuland noted in a speech to the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation on December 13, 2013, that she had traveled to Ukraine three times in the weeks following the start of the demonstrations. Visiting the Maidan on December 5, she handed out cookies to demonstrators and expressed support for their cause.

In his latest attempt to further the global alliance of weapons-grade bellends*, noted troll Julian Assange has offered a job at WikiLeaks to the Google employee reportedly fired after writing an anti-diversity memo.

He tweeted: "Censorship is for losers. @WikiLeaks is offering a job to fired Google engineer James Damore.

"Women & men deserve respect. That includes not firing them for politely expressing ideas but rather arguing back."

Damore came under fire for blasting the web company's diversity policies, arguing that biological differences play a role in the shortage of women in tech and leadership position. He reportedly told Bloomberg he was "exploring all possible legal remedies" after his alleged dismissal from the web giant.

A memo said to have been written by Google CEO Sundar Pichai and widely circulated yesterday read: “We strongly support the right of Googlers to express themselves, and much of what was in that memo is fair to debate, regardless of whether a vast majority of Googlers disagree with it.”

“However, portions of the memo violate our code of conduct and cross the line by advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace,” it reportedly said.

President showers self with praise, as usual. Does that mean he'll take the blame when it all goes badly south?

In a desperate attempt to fluff Donald Trump’s base and shield him from rising calls for impeachment, the White House has launched a campaign to ballyhoo an admittedly robust economy. It might literally be the only thing keeping the president’s head above the surface-tension of an increasingly suffocating and self-manufactured quicksand pit. Deep down he probably knows it. As long as the leading economic indicators show a decent level of growth with low unemployment and a Dow that’s above 20,000, Trump’s presidency will remain buoyant.

http://archive.is/YUz7U

The politics of this strategy are simplistic, misleading and nearsighted. But, for now, it’s all he’s got.
The act of seizing ownership of a strong economy this early in an administration is a impulsive and risky proposition, which is why it seldom happens. Not this soon. When the economy begins to backslide, as it inevitably will due to Trump’s harrowingly destabilizing presidency, he’ll have nowhere to hide. Since he’s claiming ownership of the economy from here on out, he’ll be the first person we blame when there’s an economic downturn. In other words, Trump knows nothing, and if he and his political advisers knew what the hell they were doing, they’d be more cautious about inextricably linking the president to such a mercurial collection of indicators.

President Donald Trump’s administration moved quickly to try and lift economic sanctions on Russia and other punishments former President Barack Obama had put in place as soon as it took office in January, according to multiple sources who have spoken with Yahoo News.

“There was serious consideration by the White House to unilaterally rescind the sanctions,” according to Dan Fried, who retired in February as Coordinator for Sanctions Policy at the State Department.

Fried told veteran investigative journalist Michael Isikoff, a former national investigative correspondent for NBC News and Newsweek alumnus, that in the early weeks of the administration he got several “panicky” calls from U.S. officials. They asked: “Please, my God, can’t you stop this?”

>The sanctions in question included those imposed by Obama for Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and others inflicted late last year to punish Moscow for its suspected efforts to interfere in the 2016 election. The plans Trump’s administration considered early on included returning diplomatic compounds seized from Russia in late 2016—recent reports say Trump is currently working to put this plan into action.

>Lifting the sanctions “would have been a win-win for Moscow,” according to Tom Malinowski who served as assistant secretary of state for democracy until inauguration day. Malinowski told Yahoo News that he heard the administration was working on a “grand bargain” with Russia.

>In April, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said clearly that the U.S. would not lift sanctions on Russia until President Vladimir Putin hands Crimea back to Ukraine.

>But Fried and Malinowski heard differently at the beginning of the administration. Both joined efforts to lobby Congress to bring in bipartisan legislation to prevent the rollback of sanctions.

>At the beginning of this year senators Ben Cardin, ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and John McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, moved to table legislation which would codify the sanctions and give Congress control of rescinding them. That bill stalled in early May after Republican Senator Bob Corker, who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, opposed it.

>This week the bipartisan leaders of the Senate Banking Committee proposed their own bill to increase sanctions on Russia, hitting the country’s mining and railway industries.

>In its early days, the Trump administration sought to strike a deal with Russia by seeking cooperation against the Islamic State militant group in Syria in return, two former officials said. This came in the form of a “tasking” order at the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs within the State Department. The order asked officials to draw up a list of options, including sanctions relief and the return of the seized diplomatic buildings in Maryland and New York.

>The Washington Post reported on May 26 that Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and then chief foreign policy adviser, Michael Flynn, met with Russia’s ambassador to Washington during the presidency’s transition period. Kushner reportedly attempted to set up a communications back channel with Moscow from Russian diplomatic facilities. The plan was rejected, but picked up by American intelligence in communications between Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak and his superiors.

>According to leaked intelligence reports, Flynn reportedly indicated to Kislyak during a phone call during the transition that Russia could expect a review of the sanctions under the Trump administration.
>>
>“We’ve been reviewing all the sanctions—and this is not exclusive to Russia,” a senior White House official told Yahoo News. “All the sanctions regimes have mechanisms built in to alleviate them.” they said, adding they hoped “the Russians would take advantage of that” by returning Crimea to Ukraine.

If you’re not part of the group, ‘You know what we believe is right,’ I go, ‘Well, I might have a problem with that.’ I’m a comedian, I like going on both sides.”

"Stunned and blindsided by the network I called home for the last six years," Allen wrote on Twitter following the announcement, further fueling rumors that his politics played a role in the series' cancellation. Now, it seems that the network is hoping to quell those rumors."

German techno band Scooter faces significant legal consequences for performing at a festival in the Crimea region of Ukraine that was annexed by Russia in 2014, the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany said an interview published Saturday.

Andrij Melnyk, Ukraine's envoy to Germany, told the Funke Mediengruppe newspaper chain that the band's decision to enter the Crimea region "illegally" on Thursday was "not only a scandal, but also a crime with serious legal consequences."

Melnyk said Ukrainian prosecutors had already begun legal proceedings against the band.

"This isn't some minor infraction, but a serious crime that will be punished," he told the newspaper group.

The band was due to appear at the ZBFest rock festival in Balaklava on Friday.

Scooter front man H.P. Baxxter told German media last month the band was going to Crimea to perform music, not engage in politics.
