>Women’s reproductive health will be under constant attack under a Trump presidency and a majority Republican House and Senate. Another example of this was recently seen in the Texas Bill 948, which would make abortion a felony, and consequently take away women’s right to vote. The bill was introduced by Republican representative Tony Tinderholt.

>Bill argues that fetuses are living human children despite little to support that, no exception for rape or other abnormalities

>Trump might end up backing some of this with his supreme court picks

After finally accepting they can't legislate the uterus, Texans are now trying to discourage abortions threatening to remove democratic rights. Have their feelings gone too far?

Right before Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.) took to the Senate floor on Tuesday night to read Coretta Scott King's 1986 letter to oppose Jeff Sessions for attorney general, her publishing company tweeted out the release date of her new book, This Fight Is Our Fight.

Warren had previously said she opposed President Trump's nominee to head the Justice Department, but she did not forcefully mount her campaign against the Alabama senator until after publisher Henry Holt announced Tuesday at 3:09 p.m. that her book will be coming out on April 18.

Just announced! Elizabeth Warren's new book, THIS FIGHT IS OUR FIGHT, is on-sale on April 18th.
— Henry Holt (@HenryHolt) February 7, 2017

About 90 minutes later, Warren shared the link to pre-order her book on Facebook, the Daily Caller News Foundation noted.

Three hours later, Warren was ordered to stand down on the Senate floor because she impugned Sessions' character in violation of Senate Rule 19, which states that senators are not allowed to "directly or indirectly, by any form of words impute to another senator or to other senators any conduct or motive unworthy or unbecoming a senator."

Warren had called Sessions a "disgrace," said his confirmation to attorney general would be an "insult to African Americans," and read a 1986 letter from King that accused Sessions of using "the awesome powers of his office in a shabby attempt to intimidate and frighten elderly black voters."

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) and other Senate Republicans invoked Rule 19 to bar her from speaking on the Senate floor on Sessions' nomination until after the vote occurred. (The Senate confirmed Sessions to become the next attorney general on Wednesday night.)

Around 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday, hours after the incident on the Senate floor, Warren sent an email to supporters soliciting donations, the Daily Caller News Foundation reported Wednesday evening. The email explained what happened that night and included a donation button.

Minutes after sending her email to supporters, Warren called CNN's Don Lemon to discuss the incident on television.

MoveOn members contributed $250,000 to Warren's re-election campaign in about 12 hours, CNN reported.

Warren received an enormous amount of publicity after she violated Rule 19, which included a trending hashtag #LetLizSpeak on Twitter. Even McConnell's statement on why he invoked Rule 19 against Warren left her with a new hashtag.

"She had appeared to violate the rule. She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted," McConnell said, sparking #ShePersisted to appear throughout Twitter, often accompanied with pictures of historic female figures (and Princess Leia).

“She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted." #ShePersists

Warren later unleashed a Twitter storm once Sessions was confirmed on Wednesday, sending out eight tweets that ended with: "Consider this MY warning: We won't be silent. We will speak out. And we WILL persist."

Vladimir Kara-Murza has fallen into a life-threatening coma caused by an unknown poison, his wife said on Monday. Credit Al Drago/The New York Times
MOSCOW — A leader of the Russian opposition who has been a vocal critic of what he calls a Kremlin policy of assassinating political enemies has fallen into a life-threatening coma caused by an unknown poison, his wife said on Monday.

>The diagnosis of what ailed Vladimir Kara-Murza came at a delicate political moment for the United States and Russia, as President Trump had just brushed aside criticism of Russian President Vladimir V. Putin as a “killer.”

>“There are a lot of killers,” Mr. Trump had said in the interview on Fox News on Sunday. “You think our country’s so innocent?” The Kremlin then demanded that Fox News apologize for the host Bill O’Reilly’s characterization of Mr. Putin.

>In Moscow, Mr. Kara-Murza, 35, has been in a coma and at the center of a politically hued medical mystery since Thursday as doctors puzzled over his symptoms while keeping him alive on artificial respiration.

>Mr. Kara-Murza suffered similar symptoms in 2015 and later said he had been poisoned. Then, a French laboratory found elevated levels of heavy metals in his blood but was unable to pinpoint any specific poison.

>Doctors determined the cause this time as “acute intoxication by an unidentified substance,” Mr. Kara-Murza’s wife, Yevgeniya Kara-Murza, said in an interview. His condition was stable but critical, she added.

>“The onset was just as sudden as last time,” Ms. Kara-Murza said. “He is all surrounded by machines and covered in tubes.” Other than poisoning, she said, “We don’t see any other explanation.”

>Ms. Kara-Murza said samples of her husband’s blood, hair and fingernails had been sent to laboratories in France and Israel in an effort to identify the mystery toxin.

>After the 2015 episode, Mr. Kara-Murza recuperated in the United States and suffered lingering nerve damage for about a year, but returned to his political activism in Russia despite threats. The leader of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, for example, posted a photograph of Mr. Kara-Murza in cross hairs.

>Last month, Mr. Kara-Murza submitted a letter critical of Mr. Putin’s government to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during cabinet confirmation hearings for Rex W. Tillerson, the secretary of state.

>“There are higher risks than slander or imprisonment for those who oppose the regime,” Mr. Kara-Murza wrote. In Russia, he had been traveling to provincial cities to show a documentary about another Russian politician, Boris Y. Nemtsov, who was shot and killed on a Moscow bridge two years ago.

>On the Fox program, Mr. Trump said he respected Mr. Putin and hoped Russia and the United States could join forces to defeat Islamic terrorism. The host, Mr. O’Reilly, responded: “He’s a killer though. Putin’s a killer.” It was unclear whether the characterization referred to the unsolved assassination of dissidents, muckraking journalists and opposition politicians or allegations of war crimes in Syria, Ukraine or Chechnya.

>The Kremlin’s spokesman, Dmitri S. Peskov, told reporters Monday that the description was “unacceptable, insulting.”

>The Soviet Union operated a secret laboratory to research untraceable poisons that were tested on condemned gulag prisoners, security service defectors have said.

>In 2006, a Russian law legalized targeted killing abroad. Russia has never acknowledged using the authority under that law and has specifically denied any government ties to high-profile poisoning cases.
>>
>But after whistle-blowers and opponents of Mr. Putin in recent years began dying from exotic poisons, including radioactive plutonium and a rare Himalayan plant toxin, critics of the Russian government and independent researchers have asserted that the post-Soviet government has turned again to its poison arsenal.

Declaring that religious freedom is "under threat," President Donald Trump vowed Thursday to repeal a rarely enforced IRS rule that says pastors who endorse candidates from the pulpit risk losing their tax-exempt status.

>"I will get rid of and totally destroy the Johnson Amendment and allow our representatives of faith to speak freely and without fear of retribution," Trump said at the National Prayer Breakfast, a high-profile event bringing together faith leaders, politicians and dignitaries.

>Trump's pledge was a nod to his evangelical Christian supporters, who helped power his White House win. So far he has not detailed his plans for doing away with the rule, which he has previously promised to rescind. Named after then-Sen. Lyndon Johnson, the regulation has been in place since 1954 for tax-exempt charities, including churches, though it is very rare for a church to actually be penalized.

>Abolishing the amendment would require action by Congress, though Trump could direct the IRS to disregard the rule. The tax code does allow a wide range of political activity by houses of worship, including speaking out on social issues and organizing congregants to vote. But churches cannot endorse a candidate or engage in partisan advocacy.

>Lloyd Mayer, a law professor at the University of Notre Dame, said an IRS move could prompt lawsuits, if the rule was repealed for churches but not other charities.

>Mayer also noted that a full repeal of the rule could open up churches to the possibility of spending their resources to openly try to influence elections — and for donors to get tax breaks for political contributions.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/ct-donald-trump-johnson-amendment-20170202-story.html

>>
>While some conservative Christians would like to see the rule abolished, others, especially the younger generation, support a clear separation of church and political endorsements. Many liberal churches are also active on policy issues, and could potentially get more involved in partisan politics.

>Mayer noted that for some religious leaders, the IRS rule has given them a way to avoid political pressure for an endorsement.

>"Now a church that wants to say no has an easy answer, it's illegal," Mayer said.

>Repeal does not appear to have widespread public support. Eight in 10 Americans said it was inappropriate for pastors to endorse a candidate in church in a poll released last September by Lifeway Research, a religious survey firm based in Nashville.

>For many religious conservatives, a more pressing issue they hope he will address is protection for faith-based charities, schools and ministries who object to same-sex marriage and abortion.

>The president made no mention at the prayer breakfast of other steps he may take, saying only that religious freedom is a "sacred right."

>Kelly Shackelford, head of First Liberty Institute, a non-profit legal group that specializes in religious freedom cases said that "there's a number of things he laid out that we expect we'll eventually see action on."

>Trump also defended his recent executive order on immigration, decrying "generous" immigration policies and arguing that there are people who seek to enter the country "for the purpose of spreading violence or oppressing other people based upon their faith." He also pledged to take more immigration action in the name of religious liberty.

>"In the coming days we will develop a system to help ensure that those admitted into our country fully embrace our values of religious and personal liberty and that they reject any form of oppression and discrimination," Trump said.
>>
>LGBTQ groups have been anxious that the president could use his executive powers to curb legal advances they have made. Emily Hecht-McGowan, chief policy officer for the Family Equality Council, said that she was "anticipating more to come," noting that some draft documents have been circulating, suggesting plans for a more sweeping order.

>White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Thursday that "there's nothing new on that front."

>Earlier this week, the Trump administration announced that the president would leave intact a 2014 executive order that protects workers for federal contractors from anti-LGBTQ discrimination, saying in a statement that Trump "continues to be respectful and supportive of LGBTQ rights, just as he was throughout the election."

>Religious conservatives, who saw a series of defeats on same-sex marriage, abortion and other issues under former President Barack Obama, have been bolstered by Trump's win. In a letter last year to Roman Catholics, Trump pledged, "I will defend your religious liberties and the right to fully and freely practice your religion, as individuals, business owners and academic institutions."

>Trump's Supreme Court pick this week was also considered a positive sign for conservatives.

>A favorite of conservatives, Neil Gorsuch serves on the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, where he sided with Hobby Lobby and the Little Sisters of the Poor when they mounted religious objections to the Obama administration's requirement that employers provide health insurance that includes contraceptives.

>During his remarks, Trump also took a dig at Arnold Schwarzenegger, the new host of "The Apprentice," the reality TV show Trump previously headlined. Trump said that since Schwarzenegger took over, the show's ratings have been down, and he asked the audience to "pray for Arnold." Schwarzenegger tweeted in response that he and Trump should switch jobs and Americans would sleep better.

Last week, we covered the videoptaped torture of a mentally disabled Chicago teen at the hands of 4 black thugs, who taunted him with anti-white and anti-Trump insults.

http://legalinsurrection.com/2017/01/black-chicago-teens-torture-special-needs-boy-yell-f-donald-trump-f-white-people/

Meanwhile, progressives are still fighting the vast, alt-Right conspiracy whenever and wherever they can. For example, now there is a “Racists Anonymous” group, an Alcoholics Anonymous-type organization offering a recovery program for people struggling with their “white privilege”.

http://heatst.com/politics/hi-im-bonnie-and-im-a-racist-theres-a-new-12-step-program-to-overcome-white-privilege/

The program is the brainchild of Reverend Ron Buford, a black pastor who worried that conversations about race left him angry and white participants guilty. He says he realized the need for the self-improvement program after witnessing Trump’s rise to power.

Racists Anonymous is a 12-step program, and meetings begin with everyone in the room announcing that they are, in fact a racist (step one is, of course, admitting you have a problem). The white people in the group discuss their experiences with their own racism, minority attendees discuss experiences encountering racism in society.

Fascinating. I would be interested to learn about how the Chicago teen felt about his “white privilege” while his scalp was being lacerated with a knife by his abusers.

But “Racists Anonymous” isn’t the only special, new offering for race-conscious liberals. You can now purchase a racial indulgence in the form of a Safety Pin Box.

Spend between $25 and $100 a month to receive a box that helps you be a better ally. That’s the business plan set up by Grand Rapids, Michigan entrepreneurs Marissa Johnson and Leslie Mac, at least.

Every month, they send their subscribers the Safety Pin Box, which Vice reporter Evan McMorris-Santoro describes as being “designed to wake up white people to the realities of being black in America.”

…The Box has only a few hundred subscribers (it would be fun to do a pool estimating how many of them are white Brooklyn liberals), Johnson and Mac are donating some of the proceeds to black female activists, and liberals and lefties themselves have been highly critical of the exercise.

Finally, in conjunction with the Women’s March on Washington, there is the Complicity Cleanse. The goal of this activity is lofty: Freeing yourself from the “triumph of patriarchy, sexism, xenophobia, heterosexism”…and, of course, racism.

https://www.complicitycleanse.com/

After you sign up, you will be sent a “menu” that contains a daily dose of information, resources, questions, actions, challenges– little things to do every single day. The idea is to create a platform of presence in order to forge habits that divest our complicity from the mechanisms of oppression. Once we are aware of our entanglements, we can earnestly begin to dismantle all that allows for the pernicious “-isms” of American identity. Everything on the menu is a suggestion, that will hopefully become a contemplation, a conversation, an act, and eventually an awakened pattern. Little by little we will lesson our enurement with white supremacist, patriarchal rule, and our complicity in the suffering of others.

Hi! I’m Leslie and I would enjoy the privilege of never reporting on “Racists Anonymous,” safety pins, or Complicity Cleanses again.

No word on whether you have to wear a Pussy Hat when you take that cleanse, however.

The GoFundMe site for the tortured teen has earned nearly $160,000 to help in the recovery from his “white privilege”. We hope that during Trump’s presidency that the racial divide is lessened and the inane, progressive products and dramas disappear entirely

Panic on Hong Kong subway as fire injures nine

HONG KONG, Feb 10, 2017 (AFP) - Panic struck evening rush hour
commuters on Hong Kong's subway system Friday after a fire broke out in a
passenger cabin, injuring nine people and prompting the evacuation of a major
station.
Videos circulating online showed chaos on the platform at Tsim Sha Tsui
station, with parts of the cabin on fire and one passenger lying on the
platform with his clothes ablaze as bystanders tried to help him.
"Passengers were asked to evacuate from the Tsim Sha Tsui station," a
police spokeswoman told AFP.
Other images from official broadcaster RTHK showed people packed in a
smoke-filled train cabin, and described the situation as "chaotic".
The report said the fire had been extinguished by staff.
The incident is a rare occurrence in Asia's finance hub, where the
transportation network is known for its safety and efficiency.
Mass Transit Railway (MTR), the company which operates the city's subway,
announced in its stations that "staff are handling the situation" and that
trains were skipping Tsim Sha Tsui station, which services a popular retail
district.
The MTR said the fire had caused disruptions on one of its lines and called
on commuters to consider switching to other forms of transport.

The bacterial world is rife with unusual talents, among them a knack for producing electricity. In the wild, "electrogenic" bacteria generate current as part of their metabolism, and now researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), have found a way to confer that ability upon non-electrogenic bacteria. This technique could have applications for sustainable electricity generation and wastewater treatment, the researchers report February 9 in the journal Chem.

"The concept here is that if we just close the lid of the wastewater treatment tank and then give the bacteria an electrode, they can produce electricity while cleaning the water," says co-first author Zach Rengert, a chemistry graduate student at UCSB. "And the amount of electricity they produce will never power anything very big, but it can offset the cost of cleaning water."

The bacteria that inspired this study, Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, live in oxygen-free environments and can breathe in metal minerals and electrodes -- instead of air -- via current-conducting proteins in their cell membranes. Most bacterial species, however, do not have such proteins and therefore naturally do not produce current. Taking inspiration from S. oneidensis' membrane-spanning conductive proteins, the team hypothesized that with the right kind of bio-compatible molecular additive, this electrogenesis might be conferred to bacteria that have not evolved to do so.

The researchers, under the guidance of senior author Guillermo Bazan at UCSB, built a molecule called DFSO+, which contains an iron atom at its core. To add the DFSO+ to bacteria, the researchers dissolved a small amount of the rust-colored powder into water and added that solution to bacteria. Within a few minutes, the synthetic molecule found its way into the bacteria's cell membranes and began conducting current through its iron core, providing a new pathway for the bacteria to shuttle electrons from inside to outside the cell.

Because the DFSO+ molecule's shape mirrors the structure of cell membranes, it can quickly slip into the membranes and remain there comfortably for weeks. The approach might need some tweaking before being applied to long-term power generation, the researchers say, but it's an encouraging initial finding.

This chemical approach to changing bacteria's capabilities will most likely be cheaper than bacteria genetically engineered to do the same job. "It's a totally different strategy for microbial electrical energy generation," says the other co-first author, Nate Kirchhofer (@natekirchhofer), formerly a grad student at UCSB and now a postdoctoral researcher at Asylum Research in Santa Barbara, CA. "Before, we were building these devices, and we were limited to optimizing them by changing reactor materials and architectures or using genetic engineering techniques."

The researchers call the DFSO+ molecule a "protein prosthetic" because it is a non-protein chemical that does a protein's job. "It's sort of analogous to a prosthetic limb, where you're using a plastic limb that's not actually made out of someone else's body," says Rengert.
>>
Understanding how electrogenic bacteria consume organic fuels and use their metabolic processes to generate electric currents could lead to more efficient biological electricity-generating technology. "It's useful to have a well-defined, well-understood molecule that we can interrogate," says Kirchhofer. "We know how it's interfaced with the bacteria, so it gives us very precise electrochemical control over the bacteria. While this molecule might not be the best one that will ever exist, it's the first generation of this kind of molecule."

Germany Slams Ukrainian Lawmaker For Defacing Berlin Wall Remnant

A Ukrainian lawmaker who admitted he defaced a remnant of the Berlin Wall on the grounds of the German Embassy in Kyiv has drawn a rebuke from Berlin.

Oleksiy Honcharenko, a member of President Petro Poroshenko's party, said his act of vandalism was a protest over comments from the German ambassador about potential elections in parts of eastern Ukraine held by Russia-backed separatists.

Honcharenko sprayed "Nein" -- German for "No" -- in red paint on a fragment of the Berlin Wall on February 8.

The lawmaker, who enjoys immunity from prosecution, posted images on Facebook and wrote that the wall was a "clear symbol of recent Russian occupation of Europe."

>NEW YORK — Many people have heard of Twitter. Not enough of them are signing up to use it.

>Twitter’s role as a megaphone for the U.S. president, countless celebrities and businesses hasn’t attracted regular people to the service, not in the way Facebook has, or even Instagram and Snapchat.

>The San Francisco company’s latest earnings report and dismal forecast suggest that this is unlikely to change any time soon. CEO Jack Dorsey acknowledged long ago that Twitter needs to do more to convince people why it’s useful.

>“The whole world is watching Twitter. While we may not be meeting everyone’s growth expectations, there’s one thing that continues to grow and outpace our peers: Twitter’s influence and impact,” Dorsey said in a conference call with analysts on Thursday. “You don’t go a day without hearing about Twitter.”

>But that doesn’t amount to much if Twitter can’t translate the influence into boosting its user base, advertising and revenue. Rumors of a potential sale of the company have long swirled, but no buyers have emerged. Twitter has dismissed such speculation, doubling down instead on making the service safer, differentiating it from rivals and becoming profitable for the first time in 2017.

>While Dorsey and Twitter have taken major steps recently to address some of users’ biggest concerns, including clamping down on hate speech and abuse , this has yet to make a notable difference in drawing new users. For the final three months of 2016, Twitter averaged 319 million monthly users, up just 4 percent from a year ago.

>Meanwhile, Twitter has yet to address other issues, including simple ones such as the ability to edit tweets.

>“Just like Myspace perhaps Twitter does not what to ‘change the formula’ for fear of losing its unique simple user experience, but the shareholders and CEO Jack Dorsey are running out of time,” Mark Skilton, a professor at Warwick Business School, wrote in an email.

>Twitter’s revenue growth has stalled for more than two years, and the company is cutting costs and shuffling executives. Dorsey, the Twitter co-founder who rejoined the company in late 2015 with hopes of reviving it, called 2016 “a transformative year as we reset and focused on why people use Twitter: It’s the fastest way to see what’s happening and what everyone’s talking about.”

>Even before he was elected president, Donald Trump has used Twitter like no other world leader, firing out broadsides and accolades in rapid succession and generating headline after headline with 140-character missives.

>His election has created a more active landscape for Twitter. Average daily active usage rose 11 percent compared with the same time last year. But Trump’s tweets haven’t inspired people to sign up for the service en masse. The increased usage is mostly among existing users.

>Because of Twitter’s public nature, users can see a lot of the content on it — such as Trump’s tweetstorms — without creating an account. And the service can be difficult to use for people not versed in lingo like hashtags, @-replies and the like. The company also hasn’t quite been able to explain just why people need it, unlike Facebook, for example, which is widely seen as a place to keep up with friends and family. Facebook’s 1.86 billion monthly users is nearly six times that of Twitter.

>Meanwhile, Instagram attracts 600 million monthly users who want to share photos and videos with friends or the broader world. And Snapchat, best known for disappearing photos and messages and quirky facial filters, is a favorite among millennials. It has 158 million daily users (the company doesn’t disclose monthly users, as rivals do).

>In a charged political and social environment, Twitter is trying to balance its position as a platform for free speech while curtailing hate speech and bullying. Twitter has taken several steps to address abuse, though it’s too early to tell whether they are working. This week, Twitter said it has begun identifying people who have been banned for abusive behavior and will stop them from creating new accounts. Twitter also said it’s creating a “safe search” feature to remove tweets with potentially sensitive content and those from accounts you have blocked or “muted,” which is slightly less drastic than blocking someone.

>But what matters most to Wall Street is making a profit — something Twitter has yet to do in its 11-year existence. Losses for Twitter swelled to $167 million in the fourth quarter, from $90.2 million a year earlier, as revenue inched up 1 percent to $717 million.

>Excluding special items such as expenses for stock compensation, per-share earnings of 16 cents was 4 cents better than expected, but that was overshadowed by its outlook. A lean profit outlook for the current quarter sent Twitter shares plunging more than 12 percent, or $2.31, to close Thursday at $16.41.

>There was some silver lining in the results: video. The company says it streamed more than 600 hours of live premium video from sports, news and entertainment events during the quarter, drawing 31 million unique visitors. Live video is important for Twitter because of the potential ad dollars.

This is going to sound real faggy but, have you seen the shit she sells in that line? It's all cheaply made, overpriced, and fugly. It's no wonder it didn't sell well.

It's funny seeing them cry about a republicunt getting slapped by the invisible hand of the marketplace though.
