http://www.cnn.com/2017/03/24/politics/house-health-care-vote/

House Speaker Paul Ryan sensationally pulled his Obamacare repeal bill from the floor Friday, a day after President Donald Trump had threatened to walk away from health care reform if he didn't get a vote.

After a dramatic day on Capitol Hill, Ryan rushed from the White House to Capitol Hill to tell Trump he did not have the votes to pass the measure, the culmination of seven years of Republican efforts to eradicate President Barack Obama's proudest domestic achievement.

"We were very close," Trump said in the Oval Office after the bill was pulled. "It was a very, very tight margin."

As Ryan presented the dire vote totals in his meeting with Trump, he explicitly recommended the President pull the bill, according to a senior GOP official. The decision was ultimately Trump's. Trump made the call at 3 p.m., as the rest of House leadership was gathering in Ryan's office.

"We came up short," Ryan told reporters. "We are going to be living with Obamacare for the forseeable future."
Ryan told fellow Republicans they are "moving on" from health care, Reps. Andy Barr, R-Kentucky, and Bill Flores, R-Texas, told CNN. Trump said tax reform would be next.

The decision to delay the vote marks an acute embarrassment for Trump, who had gambled big by presenting holdout House conservatives with a take-it-or-leave it ultimatum on Thursday night and put his own credibility on the line.

It also puts Ryan in a much weakened political position, after being defied by his own conference, which seems just as unsuited to governing in the Trump era as it was when it was effectively a protest coalition under Obama.

It became clear during a day of intense political intrigue Friday that despite fierce arm-twisting by Trump, Ryan and other leaders that the votes simply were not there to pass the bill and the leadership and the White House were headed for a lopsided defeat.

They were unable to narrow the schism between Freedom Caucus conservatives, who believe the bill keeps too much of Obamacare intact and moderates who worry they will pay an electoral price if millions of Americans lose health insurance.

The House meltdown on Obamacare repeal has perilous implications for the American health care system, with Republicans apparently unable to repeal the law but also unwilling to fix the deficiencies that the White House says will collapse the law.

Politically, Friday's momentous events will race like wildfire through the Republican Party's conservative, establishment base which has been told repeatedly by candidates that the first order of business with the GOP President in the White House would be the repeal of the Affordable Care Act.
>>
>>124978
Now the President may decide to go ahead with another priority -- tax reform -- yet the intricacies of that effort may be far more difficult to solve than the GOP divisions over Obamacare.

Before the vote was canceled, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Friday afternoon that Trump has "left everything on the field when it comes to this bill."
But Republicans had few firm commitments from conservatives and watched a continued exodus of moderates. This was exactly what House leadership was worried would happen when they changed the bill, the source said.

Friday afternoon, moderate Republicans and members of the conservative Freedom Caucus have indicated they won't back the bill.
>>
>>124979
Blame game:

The decision to pull the bill puts into question the state of Trump and Ryan's relationship.

Trump praised Ryan for working "very hard" on the effort and said they now plan to work on tax reform legislation.

Before the vote, the President was said to be "agitated" by the process, which he thinks is all "political," an aide said.

"We learned a lot about loyalty" during the process, Trump said Friday.

Trump maintained that "a better bill" will emerge at some point.

Freedom Caucus holding out:

Vice President Mike Pence met with members of the House Freedom Caucus at the Capitol Hill Club, a source familiar with the meeting says.

Freedom Caucus members stood by their ideological objections to a bill they say does not go far enough in repealing Obamacare.

There are signs of frustration in the White House at the Freedom Caucus, which has won a series of concession but is still holding out against the bill.

"We've emboldened them," one White House aide said.

Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows, R-North Carolina, was mum about his plans. "I'm not making any comment," he said.

A Republican official involved in counting votes said it would need about 25 of the roughly 36 members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus members to back the GOP health care bill if it's going to pass Friday.

But while Mark Meadows claims lawmakers are allowed to vote their conscience, White House and GOP leadership don't think the Freedom Caucus members take that seriously.

The Freedom Caucus traditionally votes in a block and it will be hard to break from that.

Rep. Leonard Lance, R-New Jersey, said that without a doubt, the decision to concede the repeal of essential health benefits to the Freedom Caucus definitely moved some of his colleagues to "no."

"I suspect some became a no because of that," Lance said. "That certainly didn't help."

The House of Reps voted to let the ISPs sell any/all of the data they have about you to advertisers. The bill will go to Congress soon.

Mr. Rockefeller was influential in foreign affairs, helped resolve New York’s fiscal crisis in the 1970s and was chairman of the Museum of Modern Art for many years.

David Rockefeller, the banker and philanthropist with the fabled family name who controlled Chase Manhattan bank for more than a decade and wielded vast influence around the world even longer as he spread the gospel of American capitalism, died on Monday morning at his home in Pocantico Hills, N.Y. He was 101.

A family spokesman, Fraser P. Seitel, confirmed the death.

Chase Manhattan had long been known as the Rockefeller bank, though the family never owned more than 5 percent of its shares. But Mr. Rockefeller was more than a steward. As chairman and chief executive throughout the 1970s, he made it “David’s bank,” as many called it, expanding its operations internationally.

His stature was greater than any corporate title might convey, however. His influence was felt in Washington and foreign capitals, in the corridors of New York City government, art museums, great universities and public schools.

Mr. Rockefeller could well be the last of an increasingly less visible family to have cut so imposing a figure on the world stage. As a peripatetic advocate of the economic interests of the United States and of his own bank, he was a force in global financial affairs and in his country’s foreign policy. He was received in foreign capitals with the honors accorded a chief of state.

He was the last surviving grandson of John D. Rockefeller, the tycoon who founded the Standard Oil Company in the 19th century and built a fortune that made him America’s first billionaire and his family one of the richest and most powerful in the nation’s history.

As an heir to that legacy, Mr. Rockefeller lived all his life in baronial splendor and privilege, whether in Manhattan (as a boy he и

The person, suspected of killing former Russian State Duma lawmaker Denis Voronenkov in Kiev, had an identity document issued by Ukraine’s National Guard, Ukrainian media reported Thursday, citing law enforcement sources.

Earlier in the day, Voronenkov was shot dead in central Kiev, with Ukrainian authorities accusing Moscow of the murder. Local media reported that suspected killer also died and the information was confirmed by Ukraine's Prosecutor General's Office.

The suspect had documents issued by Ukrainian National Guard’s military unit 3057, the Ukrainian Strana newspaper said, noting that the suspected murderer was likely to be one of the volunteers, who fought in the area where military operation was held in 2014-2015, namely, in Donbas.

The motion, known as M-103, became a matter of acrimonious debate, with opponents painting it as a slippery slope towards limiting freedom of speech and even bringing in Sharia law.

Liberal MP Iqra Khalid, who sponsored the motion, was applauded loudly by her Liberal fellows as she stood to vote.

The issue even became a bone of contention among Conservative leadership hopefuls.

Canada’s parliament has approved M-103, a non-biding motion that calls on the government to “condemn Islamophobia and all forms of systemic racism and religious discrimination,” by a margin of 201-91.

The contentious motion, which sparked nationwide demonstrations and protests by both supporters and opponents in early March, also calls on the government to take steps to “quell the increasing public climate of hate and fear.”

The New York Times published a front-page story Wednesday on President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch and his ties to a "secretive billionaire," despite never devoting equal coverage on a Democratic senator who had even more direct ties to the same tycoon.

The billionaire is Philip F. Anschutz, who built an empire out of an oil and gas firm. Anschutz and Gorsuch both share Colorado as a home state, and Gorsuch, whose father was a well-known Colorado Republican, was "drawn into [Anschutz's] orbit," according to the Times.

The Times reports that Gorsuch represented Anschutz in several federal court cases while working for a private law firm in Washington, D.C. starting in 2004. In 2006, Anschutz sent a letter to the Bush administration recommending Gorsuch–who was then in the Justice Department–for an open federal judgeship. Gorsuch also co-owns a log cabin retreat with two Anschutz executives.

But Gorsuch was never a direct employee of Anschutz or a key executive in his empire, unlike Democratic Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet. From 1997 to 2003, Bennet served as managing director of Anschutz Investment Co.

Bennet's ties to Anschutz were highlighted in 2010 by The Denver Post, which reported that "Colorado billionaire Phil Anschutz is famous for embracing conservative causes, but he also is a friend and former boss of Colorado Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet’s."

The Times may be concerned over Gorsuch's "web of ties" to Anschutz, but The Denver Post noted that "executives and family members associated with Anschutz Co., Anschutz Group or Anschutz Investments donated more to Bennet… than to any other federal candidate."

Bennet also has connections to The New York Times: His brother James Bennet serves as the publication's editorial director.
