So I've got an appointment to have a heart rate monitor put on my chest for 24 hours tomorrow due to the palpitations and shortness of breath I've been having when I lie down.
Pretty sure that I'm gonna end up being diagnosed with early heart failure.
Are my days of cycling basically over?

If you have arrhythmia or atrial-fibrillation there are drugs (e.g. beta-blockers) that can help. Some pros race with this condition; it's not career ending.
I have arrhythmia and some more shit in my heart, I get palpitations that scream "you're dying m8" (like I know that if I don't change my position I'll die in a few moments) when I lay down facing down, and I cycle every day. I'm not a pro obviously but yeah, your cycling days are not over you retard.
Hopefully it won't be too bad.

No, that's an ANTIQUE, and it belongs in a museum, or hanging on a wall, not on the road where it will get even more worn out and broken, with no authentic replacement parts available to repair it. Go get a nice modern CF bike and leave that thing at home.

Recumbents are the sole province of broken-down elderly men riding 10mph on a Saturday afternoon on the bike paths. If they were really any good at all then you'd see USA Cycling-sanctioned road races of them all the time, but the FACT that you don't means that they're unpopular, in addition to unsafe at any speed on public roads, and an order of magnitude more unsafe on high speed technical descents, like descending a mountain. By the way how many grandchildren do you have now, grandpa?

Can I ride this rim? Will I die? How long till I die?
You're freaking silly desu. Smooth out any sharp edges and readjust your brake pads (if indicated) to minimize uneven wear.
At what point does the law of diminishing returns hit hard for groupsets?
Tiagra or 105?
I figured since it's black friday it might be a good time to find a trainer, the biggest issue though is that I live in an apartment and would prefer something that was as quiet as possible, any suggestions?
Hint: It's definitely NOT encountered in US

Riddle me this, /n/.
I live by the former Milwaukee Road north of Chicago.
In the 1930s, their trains were known for their high speed (the old-timers speak of an infamous sign that instructed trains to reduce their speed to a mere 100mph at a suburban junction). I have a timetable from 1958 that shows the speed limit for passenger trains was still 90mph. Sometime in the 1970s, after passenger operations were handed over to Amtrak, the speed was further reduced to 79mph. Today, that remains the top speed for their "Empire Builder" & "Hiawatha" trains.
What happened?
Were the signaling systems dismantled?
Has the track never been maintained at a pre-1960s standard?
Amtrak also shares much of the line with Canadian Pacific freight and Metra commuter trains, for what it's worth.

79 mph is the magic number for territory without cab signals.
Just like 49 mph is the magic number for territory without signals.
Cab signals were likely removed because it's expensive, you need to have the properly equipped engines, and you're not moving nearly as many passengers at this point and the freight was running slower anyways.

The Milwaukee Road got asset-stripped to fuck (which is why it died) and this is a part of it. I'm sure some other anons can explain it better than me so I'll leave it here for now.

FWIW, I believe this was during the "defer fucking everything until we can merge with the C&NW/BN" era, just before the scandal out west.

>dispatchers DRIVE company vehicles out and idle everywhere while grilling the drivers for being 10 minutes late
if your country is so shit that it actually invested in something stupid like dedicated BRT lanes, you live in a shithole.

The buses here use CNG and the drivers either take a bus or use a company car that runs on e85.
No wonder more and more people are cycling to work there.

Buses are a cheap, safe, comfortable form of transport if done right.
Can Trump make it happen?
I hear he's planning to reinvigorate the whale oil industry.
>>1025289
Yes. Yes, Trump will bring back the Concorde. He'll bring back the Concorde. He'll make a double decker jumbo Concorde and give jobs to billions of Americans. It'll be tremendous. Absolutely tremendous. I tell you, very high energy project. Very tremendous. He'll make aviation great again.

Where do you rest your elbows? Looks painful, man...
That's fucking dumb and you should feel bad for having it.
I want to buy a bike but know next to nothing about them. I'll be commuting at least 6 miles everyday for the next year. I've seen mountain bikes are cheaper but I don't really know the difference between them and the other types of bikes. How much should I be spending? I have about 300 dollars as a budget.
>>1030458
The best thing you can buy with 300 is a used bike from a bike shop that sells them. If that's not an option and you had to buy something new and cheap, and assuming you're of relatively average height, your best option will be a hybrid or cheap mountain bike without a suspension fork. Spend $150-200 on a cheap hybrid then take it to a bike shop and pay them to check it over and make sure everything is set up properly (should cost you about $50)

A way to improve would be to paint lot's of bus lanes and bike lanes. And buy modern buses for rapid bus lines all across Orange County. Can not hurt to build some cheap bus shelters.

>Rear deraileur constantly shifts up and down gears, and goes slack when I put load on the peddles, leading to very dangerous situations when the fucker goes slack during a ride on the road
>The seat is extremely fucking uncomfortable and hard. I am too lazy to buy a new one.
>The handlebar covers are worn away too
>The chainwheel is very wobbly; I'm pretty sure its going to break anytime now.
This was a mistake.
Realistically, how much money would it cost to make this fucking thing worth riding? Or am I better off throwing it in the dumpster and getting a bike that isn't garbage?
>>1028721
>minor things except maybe the wobbly chainwheel
You'd be better off with another used one. But things like brake pads will wear out on that one, too. You'd better learn to keep it in shape
you could dump a million billion dollarydoos into that pile of shit and it would never be worthy
trash it and get an 80s japanese road bike or a 90s mtb w/slix
>>1028723
Alright.
Well how much would a decent used bike be? I'm very poor. I'm a retard working part time at Walmart as a cart pusher while working my way through college. I pretty much just bike to work. I could just run but biking is funner.
Would installing new brake pads and cables be difficult? The only thing I've done bike-mechanic wise is just install fucking lights and replace the tire which went flat a few weeks ago.
I've been hanging around here for a while but I've never really gotten around to posting until now. I'm going to be travelling to Japan somewhat soon and was wondering if there are resources that can get me into understanding this sort of thing more. Technical stuff (how each one works), specialist websites for Railfans, beginners guides, all appreciated, and anything else you think is relevant. Sorry if I sound like an idiot, I'm just not exactly sure how to get into this.
>>1028464
Have you tried wikipedia? They have good technical information, and articles on basically every line in japan and most stations.
If you're in japan and are fluent in japanese, you can buy the monthly 鉄道ジャーナル at any bookstore. That gets into pretty deep railfan territory, like timetabling and signals and stuff.
Yeah, I have. I was just hoping there was a more solid collection of resources available, if it's just Wikipedia and stuff in Japanese then that'll have to do

So me and my brother are working on starting a bicycle courier company in our city (probs launching everything June), where right now there are essentially no same day delivery companies, at least I can't find any on Google, which in 2016 is essentially not existing.
We've never been couriers, we both like cycling and are okay city riders, but never delivered anything.
Tips?
Also bike courier general.
You won't deliver shit Anon, you'll take calls from customers... You need to hire some dudes to do the job for you.
>>1027606
Well I'm not changing my workshop chair for an office chair, in that scenario I'd rather continue working in electronics because I like that too.
>You need to hire some dudes to do the job for you.
I've seen so many businesses (especially bars) fail because of this mentality. There will be a lot of shit to do and we might not make a lot of money in the first months, so we won't hire anyone.
We're two, I guess we'll have to do both and swap roles every so often.
>>1027606
Not true. I used to know I dude when I lived in Miami that started his own courier company. He delivered himself as well as hire other people to do it. He would only do this if it was busy enough because he wanted to make sure his employees got enough deliveries and made enough money.
