Did you swich your bike tires to winter ones, /n/?

Kind of yeah, I went form fat slicks to some cyclocross tires and hopefully I can survive the winter without going full studded.

I think I will tho, I haven't been riding my bike for almost 2 weeks now anyway :(

I ended up with schwalbe marathons (pro on front) 25c and 28c

Dont like them but its comfy and it supports more pizza weight
>>
Just changed from 1.9 Kenda's basic semi-slick tires to 2.1 Panaracer's heavy MTB set. Fingers crossed I will survive the winter.

Should the long term transit planning right be stripped from Toronto mayor and given to an expert committee?

Toronto can't seem to go 4 years without ripping up current expansion plan which already got budget allotted then diverting it to something completely retarded (Mel Lastman's Sheppard Line, Rob Ford's Bloor Line extension to Scarborough -- both of which failed economic analysis spectatularly, but proceeded anyway. Former is bleeding hundreds of millions of dollars in operating and financing costs while the latter is heading into construction despite warnings of massive operating losses for decades to come).

When are you guys gonna build the Downtown Relief Line?
Seems like you need that more than that meme Scarborough extension.
>>
>>1031632
We're working on it. iirc the DRL should be entering the Environmental Assessment stage soon. The biggest problem is funding it. Currently the cities plan would cost $4 - 6 Billion which no one seems to want to pick up the tab for. Add an extra $2 Billion or so if we go with the Metrolinx plan to build the DRL to Don Mills (i.e. the REAL DRL).
>>
>>1031668
Why not just build a six-car LRT instead of building heavy rail like Yonge-Spadina line?

DRL traffic probably won't be as heavy as Bloor-Danforth.

/n/... I have owned by bike for 5 years and have never cleaned the chain once. I bought one of those chain cleaning tools along with some Simple Green degreaser (it's for the house but can use with chain) that will get here friday.

I am so nervous for the results. I started biking "seriously" like, this summer, and I've probably ridden thousands of miles on this bike in the past 5 years without cleaning the chain once.

check if the chain is even worth cleaning, it may be too stretched that you have to replace it, you can buy a chain check tool for $4 on amazon or measure the links with a ruler.

Have fun spending an hour rinsing very last molecule off your chain and gears or risk it corroding the fuck out of it. Should have just bought some Dawn dish soap.

>>1029853
Semi truck is just 'semi-trailer truck' shortened. A semi-trailer is a trailer with no front axles; so most trailers today. A full trailer has 1 or more front axles, which is not the same as a semi-trailer with a dolly; though they look very similar to the untrained eye.

Gotta take out the airlines first probably.
>How you do it?
You could kill the airline industry in about a week if you cut off their subsidies and made them pay for the airports, screening, etc.
>>
>>1022007
You're really going to bitch about subsidies to airlines when you're talking about rail? You have no sense of irony at all.
>>
Why don't we make major airports double as major train stations, and encourage airlines to invest in trains? They would change from being airline companies to transportation companies.

I'm obsessed with license plates. I think it's kinda autistic. Like, all license plates. If I'm in a place that isn't my home for an extended period of time, I'll still be super excited by seeing plates of this "exotic" place every day.

Even in my hometown, I'll see plates for the surrounding states and I'll get excited. The design of the plate, the implications it gives with the location of the person driving the car, etc... I saw a Mexican plate in my hometown once and was excited about it all day.

I also collected as many of the Christmas snapchat filters as a I could last Christmas, just to have and see them all. It was... interesting.

Anyway, anyone else share my obsession? inb4 no autist go away.

also, favorite license plates thread. Pic rel is one of mine, probably not my fav tho.

>if someones is big, should it be easier for him to climb a mountain than for a smaller person? lets say you have a cyclist of X size. (not weight, or height but size). and then you have a clone of him thats exactly the same but 25% larger. despite the weight difference, the larger one should arrive first because under his perspective, the mountain is smaller. his relationship with the earth's size is different. am i right?an ant can go really fast for its size but if you make do a 1km road he will take longer than any normal human right? yes , gravity and wind affect both cyclists in a different way, but again , for the larger one the mountain is smaller. what happens with time? do smaller people feel time slower than big people? do bigger cyclists have an advantage? why do we have people like chavez, small but on top competition level?

After watching Seoul Station and Train to Busan back to back I looked up the trains used in the movie. The diesel locomotive was the real hero. Also when V/Line recently had problems with their "sprinter" services the diesel locomotives where used to tow the other trains and also bolted to the front to run them as services as they would set off the level crossings properly.

Unstoppable (2010), loosely based on the CSX 8888 incident, stars fictional AWVR AC4400CW #777 and #767 coupled together as a runaway train. Both having two locomotives, it makes a train with a total of 4 locomotives. The chasing train, AWVR 1206, is initially also equipped in two locomotives, but only one is used in the chase.

Both locomotives from chasing train are EMD SD40-2 and owned by Wheeling and Lake Erie. While the chasing locomotive have been repainted to W&LE colors, the other one still bears fictional AWVR livery.

Chased train is equipped in four GE AC4400CW owned by Canadian Pacific and bearing numbers 9751, 9758, 9777, and 9782. They have been repainted back to CP livery, but all (with exception of 9777) still have AWVR safety strips on the snow plow.

I want to everest a local hill with a really cheap setup just for laughs.

I was thinking I should get:

-small MTB alu frame
-steel fork
-700c alu wheels
-1x crankset
-single speed because the gradient on the hill is constant
-drop bars
-front brake

I'm trying to go as light as possible with the tightest budget, any recs?

I recommend don't custom build a bike with only one ride in mind. On a bike dedicated to climbing on the road, why would you only have one speed and no rear brake? Why a mountain bike frame?

Any road bike will do. Saving 3lbs. of shifters and cables by building what you described does not make much sense to me.

What is the elevation and grade of the hill you have in mind? Do you have friends/family to support you?
>>
>>1031015
I'd have to go 55 times up a 1/10 mile high road which is 2 miles long, that's a rough estimate for now.

I really want to build a bike for this like I said before because it will be cheaper, more challenging and more fun than just buying a road bike.
>>
>>1031024
>I really want to build a bike for this like I said before because it will be cheaper, more challenging and more fun than just buying a road bike.
Do you not already own a bike?

220 miles, half of it on a 5% grade, and >29,000ft of climbing isn't something you just go out and do for shiggles unless you're hella fit.

A friend of mine recently everested a 4.2 mile, 1,600ft climb (~7.2% grade) and he spent ~21 hours doing it.

Shaving grams off your bike isn't going to help you Everest a hill; it's pretty far down on the list of things you should be thinking about unless you're trying to break a speed record. Successful Everesting is about planning, nutrition, endurance, fitness, and mental fortitude above all.
