Cool boat.
What's the longest rail journey you've ever been on? Ever slept on an overnight train? Share your experiences.
>London to Paris on Eurostar
>2 1/2 hours
Melbourne to Sydney. cant remember how long but was over night
3 days. Empire Builder from Seattle to Chicago with my dad.
1 night, from Bangkok to Chiang Mai
Would you buy a car that programmed to kill you if some dumbass jogger decided to walk in front of you?
So we really can't move away from this kind of ethical dilemma?
The car should stop

This. It does what a human does, except it travels at or below the speed limit as appropriate for the conditions, and has advance knowledge of potential crossings and lights. In the rare situation where somebody else does something unexpected in front of the vehical, it does the same as a driver: tries to stop and hits them.
Can we discuss the helmet question without resorting to personal anecdotes / n=1 examples / feelings of any sort?
I think together we can actually dig in deep. This forum moves slowly enough.
What I'm looking at is an Australian website "BICYCLE HELMET RESEARCH FOUNDATION" railing against helmets, in an intellectual way. I want to dig down into the studies, critique methods / p-values, etc.
Can we do this?

No one can deny encasing your head in a protective material will increase your chances of survival in a catastrophic crash.
The arguments are:
Why should you have to when other "safe" activities don't warrant helmets?
Mandatory helmet laws discourage cycling, thereby making it seem unsafe and thereby less people are doing it. Less people means less funds allocated for safe infrastructure which goes way further than a helmet ever will.
Encourages victim blaming and also risky behaviour because you believe you're protected.

http://www.railjournal.com/index.php/high-speed/sncf-rebrands-tgv-as-inoui.html
What are some brand suicides in transportation industry?
The rationale for changing the name of service from TGV to "inOui" is that France will allow other rail operators to operate high speed trains on LGV beginning in 2021, but SNCF can't stop them from using the term "TGV" to describe their competing high-speed train service.
>>1077318
What does TGV stand for? Tren Gran Velocite or something like that? How can they not trademark that?
Also, rail operators are total cancer. Make the people that own the rail and run the trains be the same.

this is so stupid

Train à Grande Vitesse, literally high speed train
Do these things actually do anything? Do they actually stimulate cycling?
couldn't pay me to ride these pieces of shit.
Certainly Boris bikes and Vélo Bleu are very popular. As a cyclist i use them for general transportation when it's easier to hire one for 30 minutes than carry my own bike down the stairs and have to think about locking it somewhere on arrival. I also know numerous people who have been introduced to cycling through them and now see cycling as a viable method of transport as opposed to a kids game.
>>1064058
They're for shorter rides in a dense city or for tourists in a park.
The main advantage is not having to worry your personal bike getting stolen or having to haul your bike into a building for security.

there were a few stations in my town

then I guess they figured out that it wasn't a viable business and now they're all gone.
I figure that's true in general, that these programs never succeed long term

If the city took your bike they would leave a note where to retrieve it. So it's false.
Are ponchos worn by men too? I think they look effay as fuck, but mostly find pictures of qts wearing them. They look simplier and more useful by not being too hot and keeping your whole body dry.
Of course
ponchos are specifically designed for women. No man has ever worn one.
FFS are you retarded OP
>>1073579
On a bike a poncho will get blown around, slowing you down and preventing it from keeping you dry*.

Feel free to post anything related to public transport in the UK - including bus, trains, trams etc.
An ode to First Manchester - a marmite situation of sorts
FirstBus' operations in Manchester can be laughable at times, with buses running over 10 minutes late or even not turning up - usually to unknown reasons. Yes, traffic is a major factor and is acceptable - but its when the service is heavily delayed during quieter times which is...annoying to say the least, especially during the evening when the frequency is half hourly.
Despite this, Manchester has quite an interesting fleet of vehicles with the majority being around ten years old or even older (with some nearly reaching the twenty year mark). An example of this is the Mercedes Benz O530 Citaro fleet, with these being the first vehicles of the type in the UK, with them being introduced around 1999/2000. These are now in varying fucked conditions. There's also the usual Wright bodied Volvo stuff found all over the UK, old Dennis Tridents and other usual vehicles operated by First which a cba to mention.
In Aberdeen First is even worse, if they aren't trying to run over pedestrians and cyclists they are going through red lights. I have seen not nor did then run reds than cyclists! Stagecoach buses are driven much more responsibly and have better service in terms of turning up on time and notifying users in advance of timetable changes.
I have also seen foamers get to walk around with employees around the buses in the yard to take pictures up close of the buses in movement.
Try living in Bristol.

I like the idea of free competition in UK in case of public transport, but the amount of different companies with different, messed up prices seems very confusing. Only London has a ''unified'' system of trains, trams, metros and buses while places like Manchester have a separate tram system, dozens bus companies etc.

So I got to do a full ILS approach after my checkout flight and I fucking nailed it, granted the instructor took the radios and I just flew the plane. Even got some actual time during it.
Looking forward to starting instrument training

Let's do hangar flying stories/greentext/baconpost
tell about your most butthole puckering incident.
This one time, I was riding as safety pilot for a guy I went to high school with, I was not yet an instructor and my buddy was a freshly minted private pilot (how he passed his checkride boggles the mind).
He had just done a stop-and-go, when on upwind the tower asked us to turn an early right crosswind for traffic. My buddy yanks and banks left... directly into the traffic.
I learned the meaning of multitasking that evening. I simultaneously grasped the control yolk, called "My controls" and ate my own underwear but with my rectum instead of my mouth.
The traffic was a sheriff's helicopter who had just lifted off from their pad, and I'm pretty sure the deputy flying the helicopter could see into our cockpit because he keyed up and says "Hey, You boys be more careful" as if he saw the two of us
After we landed I asked my buddy why he had pulled the whole fighter pilot move with the turn in the wrong direction, his response "well I couldn't see the traffic, so I wanted to turn as fast as I could to avoid him"
We're still friends. He's an engineer for Lockheed Martin now even tho he doesn't know his right from his left.
>>1065228
"Yeah, fucking nailed that ILS!"
>wasn't wearing a hood
Really tho, nice job. Beginners luck is a real thing, so don't let it go to your head yet!
You'll inevitably have to go missed because you pegged a needle at some point, and if you never do it means your instructor isn't making it hard enough!
Who here cycle commutes?
Post your bike pics, details of your route.
Any tips or questions for other commuters?
My cycle commute starts on a busy road with 5 sets of traffic lights, then up a hill to a shared use path going uphill, then quarter a mile on a quiet road to gently cool off.
