My car's dead, and I need to buy something new. I don't really drive a whole lot, and never on the highway, so a motorcycle or a vespa would be perfect for me, except that I have shit balance, and can't even ride a bike.

Has anyone ever tried one of these three wheeled motorcycles? Are they worth it?

What are some good folding bikes for a reasonable price?

they make sense if you have to get on public transit
otherwise, yeah, they kinda are

>If the costs to society and the costs to private individuals are added together, the impact of the car is EUR 0.50 per kilometre and the impact of the bicycle is EUR 0.08 per kilometre.
>The study by Stefan Gössling and his colleague also shows that if we only look at costs/benefits for society, one kilometre by car costs EUR 0.15, whereas society earns EUR 0.16 on every kilometre cycled.
http://www.lunduniversity.lu.se/article/watch-six-times-more-expensive-to-travel-by-car-than-by-bicycle

How does anyone still justify using the car if they don't travel several kilometers?
Also, how do you think different modes of public transport play into this? Do buses and trains actually cost or contribute to society?
4 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1079088
Trains and buses aren't entirely cheap to operate, especially in areas with lower density. But good public transit is fundamental for everyone to have an equal opportunity, and as such it can be extremely beneficial to society in ways that are difficult to account for.

But still, I'd say that on the whole public transit is most likely cheaper per capita than cars. Even "low density" cities like LA have more than enough density to theoretically sustain good levels of ridership for public transit.

One of the issues with public transit is the insistence of building underground, which brutally increases costs of construction and maintenance, and in 9 out of 10 cases it's only done to benefit cars and/or to create more construction work and likely bribes to local politicians. The standard for rapid transit shouldn't be subways, which are the pinnacle of public transit, but at-grade LRT with traffic light priority. Such LRT can easily get 20-25 km/h average speed (while a subway gets about 30-35), and has more than enough capacity for most transit corridors that don't run through high-density areas.

People underestimate buses, streetcars/trams and trains, while overestimating LRTs and metros.

>The standard for rapid transit shouldn't be subways, which are the pinnacle of public transit, but at-grade LRT with traffic light priority
That really depends on the geography and context, I think. The problem is that almost invariably in the western world, cars get the priority above public transport, forcing it to be either elevated, underground, or shit. Grade-separated inner-city speedways are fairly common as well, to be honest, but most car-accessible streets are at-grade, of course.
LRT can't always provide the necessary transport capacities, especially when were talking about a society with less cars in use than today.
Rapid transit can't be at-grade in urban environments because it is very hard to cross, similar to a motorway, which is the car-based equivalent to rapid transit. As long as a city or borough is well-off with light rail or a tram, just build that. But you can't place high-speed rail on ground level because you'll screw with pedestrians and cyclists even harder than with all the main streets crossing city centers today.

Don't know what the fuck I'm doing

I've rebuilt old ten-speeds from the ground up and work on my bikes, and cars a lot so I'm not completely retarded, just not familiar with newer bike technologies I guess

Applied for a bike mechanic job, the description said they do a lot of suspension stuff so they would train for that, but after exchanging emails with the owner he said he'll have me build a bike to see what I've got. so far I have

>understand bike hydraulic disc brakes filling and bleeding procedure
- have hydros on my bike but have never had to do anything but pads 2bh
>front and rear indexed derraileur/shifter setup from ground up
>cable routing and fitting, especially hydraulic line (pre-cut to correct length?)
>pressing of integrated headsets etc., fitment of threadless fork and stem, I've fucked around with hollowtech BBs at least?
>thru-axle setups

Anything else you could think of as imperative would be helpful, I'm just gonna binge Youtube tutorials and hope for the best, I can't imagine it's that complicated, bikes are easier Legos than cars

You don't press integrated headsets in so they'll laugh at you getting a headset cup press on an IS system lol

Hollow tech is old so better learn how to press a bb 30/86 system in right now tard.

Indexing from the ground up the fuck is that.

Honestly just go apply for McDonalds dude

Just had my asshole cut open and drained of pus at the local clinic. Boy I love cycling

What's it like being so inept that you can't adjust your saddle position?
>>
>>1078841
So in other words, you were so dumb that you didn't realize that feeling of there being broken glass between your crotch and the saddle was something to be worried about?

Now that you've fucked up enough to have highly infected saddle sores that were so bad that they became abcesses, requiring not only oral antibiotics *AND* surgical intervention to open and drain them (and likely chunks of your crotch *removed* to get rid of the abcesses), here's what you need to do in the future to PREVENT yourself from fucking up so bad again:

1. Cycling-specific shorts (yes, LYCRA). Wicking moisture away from your crotch not only keeps your crotch cooler, but helps prevent the swamp down there that bacteria loves as a breeding ground, and that furthermore contributes to sweat glands, scent glands (yes you have scent glands) and hair follicles from becoming clogged.
2. Use a anti-chafing cream. I personally recommend Assos Cream. Chafing causes irritation, which causes inflammation, which is a major contributor to saddle sores.
3. Immediately after riding remove your cycling shorts and shower, scrubbing your crotch clean.
4. Wash your cycling clothes after EVERY RIDE, without fail.
5. If you start getting saddle sores: Get some topical acne medication containing benzoyl peroxide and apply it several times a day. Sounds stupid but it actually works.
6. Replace your cycling shorts annually. They get stretched out and don't fit properly anymore, causing the padding in the crotch to move around, which contributes to chafing (and saddle sores).
7. Get a saddle for your bike that is the right size *and* the right *shape*.
8. Get your bike fitted and adjusted specifically for you by someone who knows what the fuck they're doing; bad bike fit can contribute to saddle sores.
9. Don't hesitate to go to the doctor if you get swollen, infected saddle sores again. You catch them soon enough and all it'll take is antibiotics.

Take my advice or don't, it's up to you.

Don't normally post on /n/, but this seems like the best place.

So in about two weeks (we arrive on the 17th) I'm going to be spending a week in Los Angeles, most likely getting most of my rides around Burbank. Does anyone have any opinions on Uber/Lyft in Los Angeles, or in general?

Also, anyone have any info on generally how far off Burbank is from USC? This is my third time in the city, but I haven't been exposed to it enough to actually get a feel of the place.

I've only used lyft, but it'll be a convenient way to get around, especially in an area like Burbank where things tend to be spread out.

Without traffic you could be seeing maybe 20-25 minutes from Burbank to USC. The problem is that there tends to always be traffic, so I would say expect to be in a car for more than an hour. Alternatively, if you are staying near North Hollywood you can take the red line down to union station, then switch to the expo, which goes right through USC.

Safe travels friend.
>>
>>1078396
Sorry, you can transfer from red line to expo at the 7th and Metro station in downtown, which will save some time

You compenzate tradeoff you have made ib one kind of service with establishment of another kind of service
>>

If we plan cities to be built in equal identical boxes we can avoid all these problems by having a similar density in all areas.

Also, ban cars.
>>
>>1078420
A similar density in all areas will not avoid any of those problems. And without higher density development where routes converge, the city is likely to become more car dependent.

fuck off, sieg

https://knowyourbike.com/raleigh/gruv/2

The inlaws gave us this monstrosity. It weighs a fricken ton, has a suspension fork(for what reason!), and has the geometry of a recumbent.

The wife likes it, kinda. She mostly like the comfort style and she doesn't know this thing is a POS.

I'd like to make it a little easier/faster without going full retard. If I swap some lighter slicks on it will that help? Any opinions on swapping in a suspension adjusted fork?

Any bike will benefit from quality tires
I wouldn't waste any more money on it though
>>
>>1078272
Nothing is going to make that bike faster, it's a poor riding position for delivering power to the pedals and puts the rider in a position that's terrible for aerodynamics. Better tires would be such a marginal improvement I wouldn't even bother changing those.
>>
I just weighed this thing, 35 pounds. It weighs five pounds more than my chunky tired 27.5 bike. The wheel/tire combo is .8 pounds heavier each astoundingly.

No one will help me learn to drive and I don't have access or money for car/insurance. I'm thinking of just going with a Motorcycle then.

The problem is motorcycles tend to look more dangerous for the rider. Also I don't know how steep the learning curve is. I need something I can learn quickly and basically.

need feedback.
