Am I the only one that uses the locks they give you when you buy a new gun as wheel and saddle locks?

Free, lightweight they fuck up your bolt in your gun so it's not a good idea to use them as intended

Sort of want a new one but a lot of the old ones are beautiful (and cheaper). How do I choose one? It seems like there's pros and cons to buying a new one vs old one, choosing one frame material over another kind etc. No clear 'better'

>pros and cons to buying a new one vs old one, choosing one frame material over another kind etc. No clear 'better'
you're right
there isn't really a clear choice to make, because either new or old, as long as it is decent you'll be fine

the main differences are:
>material
newer = alu or carbon
older = chromoly
>weight
newer = lighter
older = heavier
>ride quality
newer = stiffer, harsher (debatable)
older = gentler, smoother (debatable)
>drivetrain
newer = 9, 10, 11 speed
older = 5, 6, 7 speed
>maintenance
newer = easier to find new parts, harder to work on
older = more compatibility between brands, easy to work on
>price
newer = $$-$$$$
older = $-$$$
>aesthetics
newer = modern, aggressive styling
older = classic lines and beautiful paint

Thanks anon. What kind of bike do you have?
>>
>>1078322
i have an old 90s rigid mtb i commute on and am in the process of buying an old 80s 10 speed road bike
my personal preference is old road bikes partly just because they're so beautiful
modern styling just doesn't do it for me the way old steel road bikes do
and in terms of ride quality, i really do think that old road bikes are smoother than new ones, although i've never ridden carbon, only alu and cromoly

Yo, lycrafags
>the italian government has ruled that e-bikes shall be ONLY pedal assist, MAXIMUM 0.25kw and have a 25km/h speed governor on the assist
>anything with more power or a throttle shall be effectively considered a motorbike and be held to the same requirements (plate, license, insurance and proper helmet)
I am 100% in favour of this, especially having seen mtbs capable of 70km/h, which is mental
It has however caused a lot of whinging from local bikers... What do you think?

So I'm a motor vehicle in italy?
>>
>>1084854
Those are exactly the same as here in the UK and a lot of other places too. Some countries up the power limit and maybe speed limit a bit but few increase it a lot, I think Canada is one with something like a 1000w limit.

Personally I feel that 250w isn't really enough except on flat ground which fairly light riders and bikes. I'd like to see it raised to 500w for easier hill climbing and faster acceleration (less pissed off cagers suck behind slow cyclists) and increase the assistance limit to 28-30km/h (500w would probably get you past the 25km/h limit on a lot of climbs so it'd cut in and out).

I ride a ~700w bike and either remove the limit entirely or put it at about 26km/h so if I'm pulled over I can spin the pedals and the popo can see that I'm complying. I also have pedal assist power limited to around the 250w mark (again to comply, plus it's enough on flat ground) but I have a throttle that will use full power if I need it for climbing or accelerating.
>>
Increase maximum power to around 1 kW and maximum pedal assist speed to 30 km/h and I'm happy. That would make e-cargobikes a valid option for moving around stuff in cities. On the other hand having a higher maximum power for normal e-bikes won't do anything as long as their max pedal assist speed is capped to 30 km/h.

What e-bikes really need is the 30 km/h pedal assist to make them great option for transportation within cities.

Ya but they both have Tract in their name, which is because they rely on the traction of the ground (and not a rail i guess)

i definitely enjoyed riding it up to SF when i was living in ABQ, just to get the hell out of town for a day. it goes through some beautiful country and who could argue with a nice new train. except that it's really kind of useless, i think. i mean, all the problems they got in NM and they built this train? all i can think of is how much we could use that damn train here in central TX, between Austin and San Antonio.

It seems like the less densely populated an area is, the more necessary it becomes to own a car.
Is this actually true? Is there any mode of public transit that is actually feasible for a bunch of dispersed villages of a few hundred inhabitants each?
I'm thinking of something between Demand responsive transport and publically funded cabs, which could also transport goods, groceries, mail etc.

>publically funded cabs
Never have I seen a more retarded idea on this board. If you live in a rural area, you won't survive without a car. If you live in a small town or village, you can walk or cycle wherever you need to go.

Also, the no roads meme is a logical fallacy. Businesses are capable of building gigantic stores and towering high rise offices so they'd be willing to build roads so customers could get to their business.
>>
I can actually thibk of a few places that only have population of thousands but public transport are available and cars are not needed. For instance, numerous settlements on Greenland, Pacific Ocean, Antarctica, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Far East Russia. Depend on how large and how remote the location exactly are, service they're getting can range from up to multidaily scheduled aircraft operation to down to annual ship visits. As all these mentioned locations have virtually no roads, cars are not needed.
>>
>>1077718
public transport in rural regions is certainly possible, its just very expensive. Having a bus that connecting your village of like 100 people to the next city every hour will get some people use public transportation, but probably not more than 10 a day. Some regions (think Switzerland or Liechtenstein) actually have the money to do this. You certainly can live in some places in these regions without a needing car.
