hey /n/, just wondering if anyone has read this book? it sheds a lot of light of some of the unintuitive realities of transport. some highlights:
>After he had crunched the data, the numbers revealed an interesting set of patterns. The farther he rode from the
edge of the road, the less space cars gave him. When he wore a helmet, vehicles tended to pass closer than when
he did not wear a helmet. Passing drivers may have read the helmet as a sign that there was less risk for the
cyclist if they hit him. Or perhaps the helmet dehumanized the rider. Or—and more likely, according to Walker
—drivers read the helmet as a symbol of a more capable and predictable cyclist, one less likely to veer into their
path. In either case, the helmet changed the behavior of passing drivers.
>Walker presented subjects (again, qualified drivers in a lab) with photographs of a brightly clad bicyclist in a number of different traffic situations in a typical English village. Using a computer, the subjects were asked to “stop” or “go” depending on what they thought the cyclist was going to do at various intersections. Cyclists were shown making a proper turn signal with the arm, giving a glance or a look over the shoulder, or not signaling at all. Results were tallied on the number of “good outcomes” (when the driver made the right choice), “false alarms” (the driver stopped when they did not have to), and what Walker predicted would be collisions. As might be expected (or hoped), drivers tended to sound false alarms most often when a cyclist looked over theirshoulder or gave no signal at all. As they did not know what the cyclist was going to do, they behaved overcautiously. But when Walker studied the “collisions,” he found that these happened most often when the cyclist had given the most clear indication of all, an arm turning signal. What’s more, when drivers made the correct decision to stop, their reaction times were slowest when they were confronted with the arm signal.
tl;dr: you're safer when you don't signal

If an oncoming car is turning left I absolutely will not signal if I am turning right down the same road. Drivers seem to see the signal and think "bike slow I can make my turn in time". Its just an invitation to get cut off.
I've also noticed if there is a right turning car on a road I'm turning right onto, 95% of the time if I give them a courtesy signal to let them know they can pull out, they won't.
One thing I think would be great for getting drivers to pass safely are those sideways pointing flags. But instead of a flag, a hand grenade on the end of the stick.
>>1019536
>i absolutely will not signal if i am turning right
I do this, but all in all cases for right turns
There seriously is no reason to signal a right turn, if there is a car next to you they take that to mean they can turn right with you an inch away from you, and if there is a car turning left you're fucked if you signal
Are Porsche mountain bikes any good or are they just overpriced garbage with a popular badge attached?
>mfw one in decent condition can sometimes cost more than a 924, an actual fucking Porsche car
>>1019148
The better question is why do they make bikes?
>>1019148
Any bicycle you see with a car manufacture's name on it is a piece of trash designed to attract purchases on brand recognition alone from people who have more money than they know what to do with.
Are there any that stand out for about $250 CAD? Also, what does a computer have to be in order for it to be compatible with Strava? GPS right?
Right now I'm using a fitbit surge and it's an overwhelming piece of shit that breaks down in a couple months.
Just get a Garmin 520. Set up your Garmin connect profile, and link your Strava account to it. Then download the Garmin Connect app and Strava app on your smartphone and link the Garmin 520 by Bluetooth to your phone with the Garmin connect app running in the background. After you're done your ride, your Garmin 520 can save and auto upload your ride to Garmin connect & Strava through your phone. If you get anything below the Garmin 510, 520, 810, 820, 1000, you'll have to manually plug your cycling computer into a computer to manually upload.
Buy a $20 used smartphone

Google says USD115 is about CAD150. If you want to get closer to your 250 budget, get the 530e, which has a much larger screen.
Main benefit to these computers is that they have auto upload to strava via wifi, and 35 hour battery life.
how do i fix this fucking piece of shit? it happened while switching gear
Holy shit get your spokes trued
And just put the chain back on the ring in the front

No it didn't. It happened when you were randomly disassembling things without knowing what the fuck you were doing, I see the tools in the background.

I'm looking to get a gravel bike for road and gravel/trail use. I already have a road bike but no mountain bike, and I want this bike to be comfy and durable. these two bikes look like the best value for money and componentry/tire clearance so far:

Do you need speed or you just want comfy? Because I would go with a touring bike if comfy was the goal. This one comes with a Brooks B17 meme at $1,300

If you are heavy (cyldesdale) you might want to look for a bike with V-brakes or disc brakes.
This Fuji Touring is $770 with V-brakes. Widely regarded as the best deal for a touring bike
http://www.fujibikes.com/bike/details/touring-
I would spend $15 to get kool stop brake pads for it
then spend $150 to get a Selle Anatomica saddle to be super comfy (if you are under 250 lbs)

/n/'s virtual divegrass team is taking the pitch again in the next Autumn Babby Cup. We're up in group /c/ against /pol/, /h/ and /lit/. Advancement means a spot in the first elite championship of 2017.
We have two managers now, so hopefully the extra time and effort in to preparing for this cup should give /n/ one of their best runs ever.
Schedule is as follows:
>/n/ vs /pol/ - Friday 28th, 3:30 EST
>/n/ vs /h/ - Sunday 30th, 3;30 EST
>/n vs /lit/ - Saturday 5th, 3:30 EST
EST being both Eastern Time and Estimated time simultaneously, because the match start time is usually slightly later because of other teams being slow as fuck.

Our political campaigns would be vastly improved if they were always done by bicycle.
Johnson is a pretty cool guy, I would vote for him except
>“Those Libertarians, man, I just can’t trust them,” Cliver said. “They just put too much trust in the free market.”
is exactly how I feel too.
>>1018534
I don't agree with them on a lot of things, but as a Proudhonian Mutualist my other option is just not voting
>>1018543
Mutualism is retarded.
>lets give people private property spooks, but they can only have the same amount of capital and cant accumulate capital, but we do this without the regulation of the state
It's just as meme utopian as ancap and ancom.
There's no reason to not just be a socialist unless you fell for the socialism means centrally planned economy meme. Mutualism isn't some form of miracle synthesis of capitalism and communism. It's just socialism without the social mechanism to enforce itself.

5 years ago when I started "cycling" I just went clueless to my local decathlon store and got a rigid decathlon bike that cost me about 110€ (something like pic) I rode that thing hard and everywhere without much of an issue. It came with the very very basic shimano transmission and hi tensile frame, it was properly assembled and had a 1 month free tune up warranty. Recently I started hearing a lot about BSO's and their "dangers" so my question is what really defines a BSO from just a cheap bike? From my experience sporting stores like decathlon actually offer decent bikes for very low cost that won't fall apart yet any elitist fred will be quick to judge a bike and label it a "BSO" just because it costs less than 500€
I can't find the subscribe button
>>1017452
Cost is irrelevant, the quality is what matters.
A BSO is of such low quality that it isn't fit for purpose, that is it will break in some way after an unreasonable length of time or just be downright dangerous to ride. Performance could also be a factor, whilst a BSO may have a drivetrain that rolls and changes gear, a suspension fork that moves, or brakes that eventualyl stop the bike it may do so very poorly.

What does /n/ think of ism saddles, and which one would be best for a working bike messenger plus occasional touring?

>99% of all people will never know what it feels like to drift a sporty car, /n/fags or not.
FWIW I hate driving in cities and when cities are planned around cars, and greatly prefer bikes for my everyday transport, but I actually really enjoy long road trips and driving a car fast on windy mountain roads.
>>1018812
agreed
just a lot of you fags seem to actually hate cars, even when they're used appropriately
The act of a bird or plane propelling itself through air is called flying, and the act of moving down the street in a car is driving, so what is it called when submarines move through water? Can't be swimming right?
Come to think of it what is a boat doing when it moves across the surface of the water? Boating? Do boats boat?
What does this thing do?
Warping?Impulsing?
>>1018636
>and the act of moving down the street in a car is driving,
Wrong. Driving is an act of operating a motorized vehicle, not the act o a motorize vehicle propelling itself
>>1018639
Oh shit, then what the fuck does a car do?
Why do we say we're driving a car when really we're riding in it and the engine drives it, but we say riding a bike when we're actually driving the bike by peddling.
can anyone tell me what bike this is?
>not sure if trollthread
It's a penny-farthing, popular from the early 1870s through the early 1890s. They were invented before the roller chain (~1880), so the large driving wheel was necessary to achieve higher speeds.
don't listen to the above faggot it's a 2017 trek madone
I wonder it the penny-farthing can be improved upon at all without completely destroying the design?
