I have no need for a folding bike but if I did I'd want something like that. Preferably it would be made of aluminium to bring the price and weight down and I'd use the money saved to upgrade to hydraulic brakes. I'd also get the Alfine 11 version so a seatstay split for a belt drive would be nice (if it could work with the folding mechanism).

I can't imagine it should take any more than 10 minutes to perfectly install a rack. It's made of aluminum so bending it into place is not easy, probably not even safe, I have been trying anyway but it just isn't even close.

bike infrastructure costs a lot of money, and barely reduces traffic. Whenever a city sees a rise in bikes it also sees a decrease in pedestrians. Extremely few people will stop driving their car to start riding a bike, however it's a proven fact that improving public transit, preferrably coupled to reduced road space, DOES help reduce traffic, and people WILL stop driving cars to use public transit. If you wear a suit and tie and it's 90 degrees outside you're not going to move around in a physically demanding manner, but you can perfectly well used ac'd public transit and walking to/from stops or stations.

I'm in no way a pro rider or anything, my bike's a trek 2300 with some carbon tubes in there. It's pretty old I got it second hand for like 300 bucks and used it for a few years. There's the option of upgrading it but I'd have to change my chain-ring (it's skipping) and probably the drive-train bearings.

The reason I've been wanting to change it is that it generally feels stiffer, feels like it has built up some resistance since I've bought it, maybe it's cause I'm not maintaining it properly. Here's a pic of current bike.

Let's assume Amtrak isn't a problem. This question is about regional passenger service, such as for commuters.

What I'm curious about is what the organizational nuts and bolts are with respect to things like how the railroads are incorporated, how their insurance coverage works and overlaps, regulatory issues involved in establishing passenger service, dealing with other railroads (i.e., rail leases and how they share lines in an efficient and safe way).

Like as an example, let's say you are looking to establish rail service from an outlying suburb to a major city, serving an existing station that's operated by a regional authority and served by multiple other carriers running different routes.

Suppose your surveys show there's a rail line used primarily by heavy industrial traffic that goes through the suburb and into the city that's just begging to be used for passenger service. Obviously you don't own the line and the freight RR isn't going to sell.

Putting aside whether it's a good idea (since, if it were, why hadn't any other established railroad done it yet?) what would need to happen to commence service?

Obvious things: Rolling stock, line leases, confirming the freight track can handle stock moving at passenger speeds, whether more track is needed for prioritizing passenger rail over freight, dealing with residential areas around the lines that will bitch about increased traffic...

What else would be a task involved in such an engagement?
