How did this not get mass critical acclaim from critics?
Critics praise garbage like MBDTF for a groundbreaking changing sound for Hip Hop.
Yet when a true groundbreaking Hip Hop album comes out. Critics just think it's ok.
>>
>>69697348
Because it was just ok. There were legitimately terrible songs on that album and it reused a bunch of samples.

It's good, but not their best by a long shot. There's a reason they don't play it live.
>>
>>69697348
because it's actually just ok
different =/= good

>>
>>69697348
I'm betting it'll be re-reviewed in like 10-15 years and people will give it the perfect 10 it deserves. People weren't ready for it.

What's retarded is I think Pitchfork said it was bad because it did nothing new... NOTM is the most forward pushing album in their discography, their most unique in production. most lyrically schizophrenic.

I don't get it, sucks that there are only a few of us that appreciate it for what it is, I hope it gets the critical acclaim it deserves one day.
>>
>>69697381
>and it reused a bunch of samples
Wow you're retarded. The whole point of the album is to use Björk's voice as a looping instrument. No vocal sample shows up on more than one track; each track is built from a unique set of samples of her voice.
>>
>>69698981
It's true. It's also not a controversial opinion so I don't know why you'd think it's bait.
>>
>>69698861
>NOTM is their worst and most overrated

kek. NOTM has a very vocal fanbase but they're in the minority.
>>

notm is overrated only on /mu/

>>69699166
notm gets cirlejerked on r/deathgrips too, but I remember when they ran a poll for best album and NOTM lost to every album but Government Plates and Jenny Death
>>
>>69699166
that's what I mean. I don't get why so many people on this board likes that record so much. it's nothing special and at most it's just "weird"

why is critical acclaim needed for you to consider an album good?

when you have a job and a life, you'll think back in embarrassment when you remember you used to voice opinions like this.
>>
>>69699207
>I don't get why so many people on this board likes that record so much. it's nothing special and at most it's just "weird"

Because it is special. It's a hectic and fast paced record that doesn't have any filler. Every track feels like it brings something new, no track is even similar to the one that came before it - yes the bjork samples do make it sound like everything bleeds together but when you actually get familiarized with it, you realize just how detailed the whole thing really is.
>>
>>69697388
>different =/= good
depends on how different
the two are at least strongy correlated
>>
>>69699207
>it's nothing special and at most it's just "weird"
Is that all you can say?? It's "weird?" For fucks sake, it's like you're a child.
>>
>>69699548
wow what a nice argument
literally the only reason people say it's good it's because of "le bjork samples"
>>
>>69699300
>Every track feels like it brings something new
not really, the only standouts are Up My Sleeves, which is more distorted and slower than the rest, and Have a Sad Cum BB, which is the most chaotic and "obscure" track on the whole album.
The other songs sound pretty much similar.

>no track is even similar to the one that came before it
Have a Sad Cum BB is similar to what they did on Government Plates, and the whole thing is very noticeably influenced by Grimes.

>>

As if "it's weird" is any better. That's what I would expect a child to say when they hear something beyond the top 40. I never even spoke positively about NOTM I'I just pointing out how juvenile and shallow your critique is. "It's weird." Fucking lmao.

>discussing death grips this passionately

you and everyone else itt is 17 years old, max
>>
Show me one important piece of art that received critical acclaim when it was released. I'm not saying notm is definitely a record to go down in history - but if you think it's significant, whatever score it got shouldn't mean a lot.
>>
death grips is 2 white dudes, 1 black dude but they record titled "niggas on the moon" ??? that's sus as fuck to me. mc ride out here publicly acknowledging his tokenism and my heart breaks and it breaks and it breaks

>>

I'm not saying it's bad because it's weird you idiot, I'm saying people only like it because it's weird
there's nothing special about it
>>
>>69699612
>not really, the only standouts are Up My Sleeves

You sound like every person that listened to notm twice.

I agree that Have A Sad Cum sounds a lot like what they did on GP though, but with the chaos turned way up, while still managing to be a cohesive full fledged song.

Those Grime songs sound nothing like NOTM, nothing at all. You could probably use better examples than that to point to "influences" there's plenty of music out there with strange female vocals that are wailing, but none of them sound like notm does.

Feel free to explain though how Billy Not Really sounds just like Voila, or how Say Hey Kid is similar to Fuck Me Out, or how Black Quarterback is just like Big Dipper. These tracks sound very little alike, the closest you'll get to this is Billy Not Really and Black Quarterback but even those two feel different because BQ is lyrically frontloaded with that exhaustive verse
>>
>>69699738
That's an idiotic statement and says more about you than it does anybody else. This is what every 18 year old says to people that have different tastes than them.

"You only like X cause it's weird"

No, people have different tastes, stop projecting your shallowness on others.
>>
>>69699738
>I'm saying people only like it because it's weird
My point that you're a child still stands. This is still a shallow and terribly inept thing to say. The same could be said about the velvet underground, bowie, kraftwerk, public enemy, etc. you're just showing a completely ignorant understanding of the music. Maybe people enjoy NOTM for the disorienting mood Björk's voice is used to create? or the allusions to alien abduction and the way Ride relates it to social isolation? You sound like somebody who is very uneducated about experimental music, deems it all "weird" because it doesn't make sense to you. Again a very immature thing to do.

>Thinking Jenny Death is rap rock because it has guitars

It's a controversial opinion on /mu/, I'm inclined to agree with you though friend.

Government Plates is also bad, stay mad nerds.

because death grips is shit and their only mildly decent release was Exmilitary
>>
>>69699688
I want /mu/ to stop falling for painfully obvious b8
>>
>>69699920
How do you like Exmilitary but not The Money Store? They're both the same album, except TMS has a consistent mood and atmosphere throughout.

It's better in every way, the only thing it lacks is a potent track like Beware.
>>
>>69699757
>You sound like every person that listened to notm twice.
I've listened to it more than 10 times, and it's my favorite dg album so far

>Feel free to explain
songs on NOTM sound more similar to each other than any songs from any other dg album because of bjork and ride's often use of his calm voice

>Those Grime songs sound nothing like NOTM
you should be one of those death grips fags who even deny that exmilitary sounds like blackie's spred luv lp and beware is a straight-up dalek rip-off
anyway i rec you to check your ears

the way bjork's voice is sampled on that album is not only borrows from grimes (the only difference is that it's a little bit more chaotic, the same thing with Have a Sad Cum BB and Government Plates), Andy Morin is confrimed being a grimesfag via his instagram, pretty sure it was his idea to use her voice the same way they used all the other elements of the album with v-drums
he even used her ideas before, those I noticed are here, not sure how many there are similarities besides these because i'm not a big grimes fan, maybe i should explore her discography deeper

(though this one is not kinda obvious, probably he wasn't trying to make Deep Web sound like inside-out version of that grimes song, but it shows that they used the same or at least very similar synth pack)

>>
>>69698861
how can you even say this. NLDW and NOTM are obviously two of their best. worst are TMS and BP.
>>
>>69699052
That was like the first thing they reviewed after Death Grips bailed out on their festival iirc. Pitchfork was just being a little bitch.
>>
Even if it were to be highly praised by critics and sites, the vary opposite of this thread would be created claiming it to be just a bunch of mumbleing electro noise. Contrarians ruin everything, but such is 4chan culture
>>
>>69705163
are you seriously so insecure / bad at defending what you like that a thread of people disagreeing with you that the music is ruined?
>>
>>69705196
I have had no opinion on the music posted in this thread, just pointing out the trends of this website. When something reaches a certain level of popularity, there always seems to be a group that forms that pushes ideas on why it's "shit" or "great. No need to be salty
>>
>>69699612
Fuck Me Out has a really good punk-like vocal section in the back half of the song and I've read people say that the song is in 7/8 or 7/4 or some shit

Big Dipper's outro drum "solo" Zach does

Billy Not Really has a really catchy and danceable outro

Black Quarterback has an incredible intro vocal ramble from Ride

Viola has an awesome drum beat from Zach

Niggas on the Moon isn't my favorite album. Personally I rank TPTB as a whole as 8/10 and fourth out of their discography (GP #1, BP #2, TMS #3). I think I enjoy Jenny Death more but NOTM still has some great songs and good sections of songs. Only ones I don't really care for are Say Hey Kid and Have a Sad Cum
