The absolute, undisputed, heavy weight champion, killer G-Funk song is...
$$$$$ Three Wheel Motion by Ganksta C. $$$$$

#8 - Above The Law - Black Superman
#9 - K-Dee - Hittin' Corners

aaaaaaaah this one used to be one of my favorite things ever
>>69697024
Nate Dogg seriously had one of the smoothest, most beautiful voices ever
This may have been the quintessential g-funk groove:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXrz6rJdMtE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVxxgKWaWlU
Fuck was g-funk the greatest music ever?
>>69697018
>Three Wheel Motion by Ganksta C.
Damn that is good
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkoOOYn8NH4
I will always prefer the California vibe to New York's
>>69697018
>Above The Law - Black Superman
I always find it really touching to hear rappers talk about their moms.
I like how the groove in this one sounds like it's running backwards
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJPIv-gPMq4
g-funk had such a spooky kind of trippiness. reminds me of weed paranoia combined with meth vibes (which is seriously exactly what that vibe is)
G-funk is interesting because it's really masculine and hard but it's also smooth and straight up beautiful, and also really dreamy and trippy, and sexy as fuck, and scary and paranoid but also fun and care-free.
>>69697126
Thanks man, appreciate it. 3 Wheel Motion is such an unappreciated song. The first time I heard it I was blown away. Those synths (or whatever they are) that come in at 55 seconds just kill it.
>>69697018
I haven't heard a lot of these tracks in so fucking long. Thank you.
>>69697175
It's just slowed down to this perfect slow tempo, in this delicious zone where it feels like it could go slower or faster but just kinda hangs there in a really satisfying limbo. It feels good to listen to.
This one too:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sS4lZF_tBAo
Like getting aurally stroked-off. I'm surprised not more music sits at that tempo.
>>69697201
And I guess Houston shit is really good for that slow groove. But I like when West Coast does it too.
I wish people mentioned g-funk more here. Or anywhere where I live. I actually think listening to it is good for me. Which is weird because I actually lived in SoCal during that whole gangsta era and saw so many young people die or get into the worst shit because they got into gang culture, but the music just hits this perfect frequency for me. I just want to live in it. In some ways I feel like it's the perfect vibe.
>>69696882
I actually really liked the whole West Coast gangasta aesthetic. It's influenced me to this day. Like I kind of dress in this zone between preppy and rave/techno and vaguely New Age, but where I really got it was from West Coast gang culture in SoCal. Like button down shirt over white t with white sneakers and hair length kind of at that DJ Quick length and always wearing like blue and grey and black.
Such a massive key part in my life.
Oh man, it's great to see some g funk love here. One of the best subgenres. I will say Dre Day is the best g funk song ever, and Mac Mall's Illegal Business album has some underappreciated g funk on it. Also, please post g funk albums
>>69697177
My pleasure man, glad you dig 'em.
>>69697201
Man, that's a fantastic way of describing it. I have trouble describing the way music hits me, but you just nailed it there. Thanks for that.
And I agree, Piru love has that similar type of vibe. What I like about the Bloods & Crips is that they always have this gritty, harsh, yet slightly sad (or desperate) tone to their songs. Another good song of theirs is:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQE-K-iM4b4
most underrated coming thru
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPNFee2Ju8c
It's weird that this sinister, cruel culture that led to so many black kids murdering each other has such beautiful, dreamy music. Seriously some Island of Lost Boys shit. Sonic crack.
>>69697397
I think it helps that the majority of G-Funk artists would have been brought up listening to those sweet 70s/ 80s funk and soul grooves. That planted the seed for the early 90s hip hop we all love.
>>69697418
Yeah, when I used to live near those areas where it all came from, they called that stuff Old School. Like the oldies for the Southern California ghetto.
Like that music was already super smooth and sexy and shiny, but then these drugged up gangster kids brought out its really dreamy, hazy qualities.
Also, like New York would have listened to the more bustling, hyperactive aspects of Electrofunk and stuff because New York is more cramped and hectic, whereas the California dudes tended to be more into the backbeat and emphasized that more leaned-back, dragging kind of P-Funk side of the sound.
Let's pump some essential classics in this thread:

Not a typical g-funk song but I always liked this one. So sinister.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CL1v1n6iegw
The atmosphere to this one just takes me to such a different era. I almost feel nostalgic for it.

>Like that music was already super smooth and sexy and shiny, but then these drugged up gangster kids brought out its really dreamy, hazy qualities.
I'm learning a lot of good ways to describe G-Funk today. Funnily enough it was G-Funk that introduced me to a lot of 70s and 80s music. And, of course, GTA Vice City's Fever 105 radio station, if you know it?
Producers back in the late 80s and early 90s were really good at spotting a great beat and using it to it's best effect. A couple of my favorite examples would be..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phITXWICxlM which comes from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jARnAPeZfnM&spfreload=10
And https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CivihbG_A0&spfreload=10 which comes from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oql4bV2h2B4&spfreload=10
I actually made a 70s/80s playlist full of funky soul grooves just in case you're interested:

It's crazy what hit-machines these guys were. From like '92 until 2002.
And they did it on their own, with their own people. Seriously fucking impressive. I'd put any of their hits above any Taylor or Beyonce hit or whatever.
>>69697555
Big tune! Just has that creepin' through the hood feel to it. The pam flute that comes in at 47 seconds always cracks me up though.
Eazy E has a similar vibe in a lot of his songs.

Appreciate you sharing all these. I've been wanting to go back through all this for years and seek out the deepcuts.
Sucks, I have to get some sleep now - but I really want to keep hanging out and enjoying all these.
Feel free to keep dropping links if you way, btw. Will definitely be checking back on this thread tomorrow.
Man, that Ice Cube track is gorgeous. It was such a great technique hip hop introduced how they'd just take the juiciest, most potent, pristine moment in some old track and extend this moment of pure vibe.

The pleasure is all mine, man. I'm glad I found a couple of like-minded individuals who feel the same way I do. I'll keep this thread going as long as I can.
>>69697695
Bone Thugs & Harmony also did a song with Eazy E which has a bit of a G-Funk vibe to it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtsKcHmceqY
It's a shame X-Raided chose the "rappin through a telephone" vibe for Check Your Bitch because that is one banging beat and the telephone effect kind of ruins it in my opinion.
>>69697778
That's similar to the reason why I like Chief Keef's "Don't Like".
It's not particularly well made or anything, it just carries that vibe of a group of lunatics that wouldn't think twice about putting a shank in for no reason.
Nice tune to get stoned to..

I was more of a guy who liked the East Coast aesthetic. Feels more real and I think a lot of it has to do with New York and London, my hometown, being compared a lot.

Part of the thrill with Chicago drill is that you never know if your favorite upcoming rapper will get murdered this week.
